The aim of this study is to evaluate the biologic importance and prognostic significance of selected clinicopathological parameters in patients with oral (OSCC) and oropharyngeal (OPSCC) squamous cell carcinoma, with emphasis on smoking, protein p16(INK4a) (p16) expression, and human papillomavirus (HPV) status. The study sample consisted of 48 patients with OSCC and 44 patients with OPSCC. Half of the patients were nonsmokers and the other half were gender-, age- and tumor localization-matched smokers.

Calcific aortic valve disease is considered a form of atherosclerosis and, like the latter, possibly of inflammatory origin. The aim of our work was to study the pattern of cellular infiltrate in calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAS). Fifteen operatively excised calcified aortic valves were examined by histology and immunohistochemistry (CD20, CD79α, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD68, CD138, CD117, BJK, BJL, IgA, IgD, IgG, IgG4 and IgM).

The aim of the study was to investigate the role of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection in the etiopathogenesis of oral (OSCC) and oropharyngeal (OPSCC) squamous cell carcinoma in non-smoking and non-drinking patients (NSNDP). Twenty-four OSCCs and 22 OPSCCs were analyzed by immunohistochemistry for p16(INK4a) protein (p16) expression and by chromogene in situ hybridization (CISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for HR-HPV DNA presence. The series included 23 males and 23 females aged 35-93 years.

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma of salivary glands is a recently described rare tumor with favorable prognosis. This study reports the case of 50-year-old woman with swelling lasting for 9 months in the right parotideomasseteric area. Grossly, the tumor was well circumscribed and dominated by cystic space.

Isolated thoracic aortitis (ITA) is diagnosed in a variable proportion of patients operated on for dilation/aneurysm of ascending aorta. The etiopathogenesis of ITA remains unclear. We studied 11 cases of ITA in order to determine the role of IgG4-mediated immune responses in its pathogenesis.

The occurrence of liposarcoma in the tongue is rare with only 34 cases published so far. We report six new cases of atypical lipomatous tumor (ALT) of the tongue, and detection of mdm-2 and CDK4 expression by immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), respectively, was performed. The series comprised three males and three females, aged 11-78 years.

A case of a 63-year-old man with a swelling lasting 2 years in the left infraauricular area is reported. Examination by fine needle aspiration cytology raised suspicion of mucoepidermoid or adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland and an excision was recommended. The lateral parotidectomy specimen showed a poorly circumscribed gelatinous tumor measuring 15 mm in diameter within the parotid gland tissue.

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is an exceedingly rare event with only about 100 cases reported in the English written literature. We report two cases of a 65-year-old man with duplicity of colonic and lung adenocarcinomas who presented with swelling of the left parotid gland, and of a 75-year-old man who presented with swelling of the right parotid gland. Microscopical and immunohistochemical examination showed metastasis of lung carcinoma and of renal carcinoma, respectively, to Warthin tumor as the first clinical manifestation of the malignancy in the latter case.

The aim of the study was to compare the extent of maxillary incisor root resorption during different orthodontic tooth movements using three different techniques, namely the basal intrusion arch, the three component arch, and levelling of the upper dental arch with the straightwire appliance. The radiographs of 49 subjects (20 males and 29 females) with a mean age of 14.5 years were taken at two time points: in groups 1 and 2 after the levelling phase and in group 3 immediately after placement of the archwire (T1) and in all groups after a period of 6 months (T2).

The immunohistochemical expression of galectin-3 (Gal3), cytokeratin 19 (CK19), neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), and E-cadherin (Ecad) was evaluated to assess their use in diagnostics of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). A total of 84 PTCs - 36 classical variants (cPTCs), 26 follicular variants (fPTCs), and 22 papillary microcarcinomas (mPTCs) were studied. Expression of Gal3 was found in 36/36 (100%) cPTCs, 24/26 (92%) fPTCs, and 19/22 (86%) mPTCs.

A total of 88 samples of laryngeal lesions (23 vocal cord nodules (VCNs), 23 papillomas (PAs), 18 dysplasias (DYs), and 24 carcinomas (CAs)) were analyzed for p16INK4a protein (p16) expression by immunohistochemistry and for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection using chromogene in situ hybridization (CISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The series comprised 62 males and 26 females, aged 1-87 years (median 55 years). p16 expression was detected in 2 of 23 (9%) VCNs, 18 of 23 (78%) PAs, 9 of 18 (50%) DYs, and 14 of 24 (58%) CAs.

The influence of the donor vehicles pH and the addition of laurocapram or transkarbam 12 as permeation enhancers on the transdermal permeation of butorphanol through human skin were examined with the aim of finding out about its possible use in the transdermal delivery system. As the pH of the donor vehicles rises, the mean value of butorphanol skin fluxes declines; an exponential relationship of the means of butorphanol flux values against the pH of the buffered aqueous donor vehicles has been demonstrated. The presence of 1% of transkarbam 12 (T12) or 5% of laurocapram (LC), respectively, in an isopropylmyristate (IPM) donor vehicle increased transdermal fluxes of butorphanol almost 2.
