Article Synopsis
  • Somatrogon is a long-acting growth hormone treatment designed for children with growth hormone deficiency, administered once a week compared to a daily option (Somatropin).
  • The study compared the treatment burden felt by patients and caregivers during 12-week periods of each injection regimen, using standardized questionnaires to measure overall life interference.
  • Results showed that once-weekly somatrogon significantly reduced treatment burden (lower life interference scores) and was associated with greater convenience and satisfaction than the daily somatropin injections.

Background: Although both the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and the 10-valent pneumococcal non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D-conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV) are widely used, it is unclear how interchangeable they are in terms of immunogenicity.

Methods: Two phase 3, open-label, multicenter studies were conducted to assess the immunogenicity and safety of a booster dose of PCV13 in children primed with PHiD-CV or PCV13. In the Czech Republic, 12-15-month-old children received a PCV13 booster after 3-dose priming with either PHiD-CV or PCV13.

J Perinatol

October 2016

Department of Neonatology, Children Faculty Hospital Kosice and Medical Faculty, Pavol Jozef Safarik University Kosice, Slovakia.

Objective: We tested the accuracy of transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) measure in newborns undergoing phototherapy.

Study Design: In a prospective study of 150 term Caucasian neonates, 255 measurements of total serum bilirubin (TSB) and TcB concentration were obtained 2 h after discontinuing phototherapy. TcB measurements obtained on the forehead, sternum, abdomen and covered lower abdomen were statistically compared with the corresponding TSB.

Narcolepsy-Associated HLA Class I Alleles Implicate Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity.

Sleep

March 2016

National Reference Laboratory for Histocompatibility, Transplantation Immunology Unit, Department of Genetics and Laboratory Medicine, University Hospital Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland.

Study Objectives: Narcolepsy with cataplexy is tightly associated with the HLA class II allele DQB1*06:02. Evidence indicates a complex contribution of HLA class II genes to narcolepsy susceptibility with a recent independent association with HLA-DPB1. The cause of narcolepsy is supposed be an autoimmune attack against hypocretin-producing neurons.

Study Objective: Prior research has identified five common genetic variants associated with narcolepsy with cataplexy in Caucasian patients. To replicate and/or extend these findings, we have tested HLA-DQB1, the previously identified 5 variants, and 10 other potential variants in a large European sample of narcolepsy with cataplexy subjects.

Design: Retrospective case-control study.

Meningeal carcinomatosis (MC) is a malignant infiltration of the leptomeninges and subarachnoid space and can be a devastating complication of a systemic malignancy. Although often found in patients with known metastatic malignancies, MC can also be the initial manifestation of an underlying malignancy. We report four case studies where back pain, dizziness, cognitive decline, headache and headache with the cranial nerve VI palsy were the first signs of MC.

Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty Hospital Kosice, 04011, Slovak Republic.

Adrenal myelolipoma is an uncommon, benign and hormonally inactive tumor. Most lesions are asymptomatic and usually are discovered incidentally at autopsy studies. Authors report on 6 patients (5 women, 1 man) with adrenal myelolipomas (5 right, 1 left), analyze their morphological findings and association with an adrenal hormonal overproduction.
