Article Synopsis
  • A new technique called Camera-Assisted Laser photocoagulation and Cryotherapy of the Retina (CALCR) is introduced for treating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) using the RetCam 3 digital imaging system.
  • A study from Nov 2011 to Oct 2013 involved 113 infants diagnosed with high-risk prethreshold ROP, where CALCR was applied to 23 infants under general anesthesia with no serious complications.
  • The CALCR technique enhances treatment precision by providing high-resolution images of the retina, enabling better visualization, comparison of retinal conditions, and reducing the risk of damaging healthy tissue.

Background: The aims of this study were to describe the basic parameters of adult patients with acute community-onset salmonellosis or campylobacteriosis responsible for more than 90 % of all cases of community-onset diarrhea in the Czech Republic, and, according to the results of this analysis, to update the diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms.

Materials And Methods: The data were collected retrospectively between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013. Patients with systemic signs of infection having at least 2 signs of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) or with elevated serum procalcitonin levels (more than 0.

The expression, cellular distribution, and subcellular sorting of the microtubule (MT)-nucleating γ-tubulin small complex (γTuSC) proteins, GCP2 and GCP3, were studied in human glioblastoma cell lines and in clinical tissue samples representing all histologic grades of adult diffuse astrocytic gliomas (n = 54). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed a significant increase in the expression of GCP2 and GCP3 transcripts in glioblastoma cells versus normal human astrocytes; these were associated with higher amounts of both γTuSC proteins. GCP2 and GCP3 were concentrated in the centrosomes in interphase glioblastoma cells, but punctate and diffuse localizations were also detected in the cytosol and nuclei/nucleoli.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is an aggressive cancer with poor prognosis, highlighting the need for new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.
  • This study analyzed microRNA expression in 74 tumor tissues, 18 chronic pancreatitis tissues, and 9 normal tissues, finding significant differences in levels of certain microRNAs.
  • The results suggest that specific microRNAs may serve as potential biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis, as their levels correlate with disease progression and patient survival outcomes.

Flow cytometry is a powerful method, which is widely used for high-throughput quantitative and qualitative analysis of cells. However, its straightforward applicability for extracellular vesicles (EVs) and mainly exosomes is hampered by several challenges, reflecting mostly the small size of these vesicles (exosomes: ~80-200 nm, microvesicles: ~200-1,000 nm), their polydispersity, and low refractive index. The current best and most widely used protocol for beads-free flow cytometry of exosomes uses ultracentrifugation (UC) coupled with floatation in sucrose gradient for their isolation, labeling with lipophilic dye PKH67 and antibodies, and an optimized version of commercial high-end cytometer for analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Limited data exists on the use of monoclonal antibodies for retreatment in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but a study found that ofatumumab showed a 47% objective response rate (ORR) in patients resistant to fludarabine.
  • In a retreatment study, 29 CLL patients received eight weekly ofatumumab infusions followed by monthly maintenance, resulting in a 45% ORR after 8 weeks and 24% maintaining disease control after 52 weeks.
  • While retreatment resulted in better disease control duration compared to initial treatment, 72% experienced infusion reactions and there were three fatal infections, suggesting the need for careful monitoring.

Controversies still exist regarding definition of the thrombotic risks in Ph- (BCR/ABL1-) myeloproliferative disorders with thrombocythemia (MPD-T). Platelet counts at diagnosis are currently not taken as a risk factor of thrombosis. In our cohort of 1179 patients with MPD-T, prospectively registered for anagrelide treatment, we found that the median platelet count prior to the thrombotic event was significantly higher than at time points without any ensuing thrombosis (453 vs.

Data in the literature regarding the factors that predict unfavorable outcomes in adult herpetic meningoencephalitis (HME) cases are scarce. We conducted a multicenter study in order to provide insights into the predictors of HME outcomes, with special emphasis on the use and timing of antiviral treatment. Samples from 501 patients with molecular confirmation from cerebrospinal fluid were included from 35 referral centers in 10 countries.

From January 2011 to December 2013, a total of 262 samples, from 188 patients suspected of having syphilis were tested for the presence of treponemal DNA by PCR amplification of five chromosomal loci, including the polA (TP0105), tmpC (TP0319), TP0136, TP0548, and 23S rRNA genes. Altogether, 146 samples from 103 patients were PCR positive for treponemal DNA. A set of 81 samples from 62 PCR-positive patients were typeable, and among them, nine different genotypes were identified.

Images of ocular fundus are routinely utilized in ophthalmology. Since an examination using fundus camera is relatively fast and cheap procedure, it can be used as a proper diagnostic tool for screening of retinal diseases such as the glaucoma. One of the glaucoma symptoms is progressive atrophy of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) resulting in variations of the RNFL thickness.

Treponema pallidum strains are closely related at the genome level but cause distinct diseases. Subspecies pallidum (TPA) is the causative agent of syphilis, subspecies pertenue (TPE) causes yaws while subspecies endemicum (TEN) causes bejel (endemic syphilis). Compared to the majority of treponemal genomic regions, several chromosomal loci were found to be more diverse.

The case of an HIV-positive man treated for acute toxoplasmosis with no traces of malignancy is reported. A second lymph node extirpation was performed after 5 months, which identified the presence of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells. This case suggests that toxoplasmosis may cause changes in the regulation of surrounding cells and induce neoplastic proliferation.

Introduction: Epidural analgesia (EA) has significant contraindications including coagulation disorders and parturient refusal. One alternative is intravenous self-administered analgesia using the ultra short-acting opioid remifentanil (rPCA). We compared the efficiency and safety of standard epidural analgesia with parturient-controlled intravenous analgesia using remifentanil as well as personal satisfaction.

Introduction: This study describes the results achieved using a combination of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with chondrocytes (CHC) and a new scaffold consisting of type-I collagen and chitosan nanofibers in the prevention of partial growth plate arrest after iatrogenic injury in pigs.

Material And Methods: The miniature pig was selected as an experimental model to compare the results in the left femoral bones (MSCs and CHC in scaffold transplantation into the iatrogenic partial distal growth plate defect) and right femoral bones (scaffold alone transplantation). The experimental group consisted of 10 animals.
