Background: Breast reduction techniques have been considered functional procedures proposed to reduce the volume and elevate the position of the nipple-areola complex. Traditionally these techniques were performed as mostly functional procedures. The main reasons for dissatisfaction after a reduction technique are breasts with a deflated appearance due to alteration of the shape, particularly of the upper pole, and simultaneously, the high frequency in the appearance of pseudoptosis in the medium and long term.

Serpins represent one of the most diverse families of serine protease inhibitors. Despite their complexity, they are virtually found in all organisms and play an important role in homeostasis processes such as blood coagulation, inflammation, fibrinolysis, immune responses, chromatin condensation, tumor suppression, and apoptosis. There has recently been particular interest in studying serpin functions in infection and inflammation, especially since more serpins from parasites have been identified and characterized.

Article Synopsis
  • * Trichinella spiralis, a type of parasite, uses its excretory-secretory (ES) antigens to prevent the formation of NETs by keeping neutrophil nuclei intact, which means NETs aren't released.
  • * The study suggests that while ES antigens inhibit NET formation, other neutrophil functions like phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production remain unaffected, indicating a potential therapeutic angle for autoimmune diseases involving NETs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Scedosporium apiospermum is a fungus that can cause lung infections in both healthy and immunocompromised individuals.
  • - Researchers studied the cytokine response in mice infected with this fungus, focusing on molecules that are key to fighting infections.
  • - They discovered that specific pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) were produced early in the infection, suggesting they might help control the fungal invasion.

Vitiligo is the most common depigmenting disease characterized by achromic macules due to selective loss of melanocytes. The pathogenesis remains poorly elucidated, and multiple hypotheses exist regarding its pathogenesis. Evidence suggests that stress on melanocytes can result in activation of the immune system, and involvement of both activated cluster of differentiation (CD8+) cytotoxic and CD4+ T cells in the dysfunction, depigmentation, and apoptosis of melanocytes.

Infection with (CDI), a common healthcare-associated infection, includes symptoms ranging from mild diarrhea to severe cases of pseudomembranous colitis. Toxin A (TcdA) and toxin B (TcdB) cause cytotoxicity and cellular detachment from intestinal epithelium and are responsible for CDI symptomatology. Approximately 20% of strains produce a binary toxin (CDT) encoded by the and genes, which is thought to enhance TcdA and TcdB toxicity; however, the role of CDT in CDI remains controversial.

Article Synopsis
  • Neonatal bacteremia, primarily caused by Gram-positive bacteria, poses a significant risk of severe infections like pneumonia and meningitis in preterm newborns.
  • Current models using older mice are not ideal for studying infections in preterm infants, prompting this study to use 0-day-old BALB/c mice infected with different bacteria.
  • The study found that mortality rates depended on both the bacterial species and the amount injected, with the lungs showing the highest levels of bacterial burden and inflammation, suggesting this model could enhance understanding of neonatal pneumonia.

Pulsatile tinnitus and imaging diagnosis. A case report.

Radiol Case Rep

June 2022

Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Facultad de Medicina y Hospital Universitario "Dr. Jose E. Gonzalez", Radiology Department, Av. Madero y Gonzalitos s/n, Colonia Mitras Centro, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico C.P. 64460.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in one or both ears when no external noise exists to cause that perception. It can be otological, neurological, drug-related, traumatic, due to exposure to high decibel levels, or associated with a vascular abnormality-the latter usually causing pulsatile tinnitus. We present the diagnostic image of a patient with pulsatile tinnitus with terminal plate dehiscence of the jugular bulb and review the diagnostic workup.
