Objective: SCN1A variants are associated with epilepsy syndromes ranging from mild genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) to severe Dravet syndrome (DS). Many variants are de novo, making early phenotype prediction difficult, and genotype-phenotype associations remain poorly understood.

Methods: We assessed data from a retrospective cohort of 1018 individuals with SCN1A-related epilepsies.

Article Synopsis
  • Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a genetic skin condition that causes blistering due to mutations in proteins that help bind skin layers together.
  • A study tracked 15 patients with recessive dystrophic or junctional EB, analyzing their blood for autoantibodies related to autoimmune blistering diseases.
  • Results showed that patients with recessive dystrophic EB had a significantly higher chance (70%) of developing these autoantibodies compared to those with junctional EB (20%), with reactivity most notably against specific collagen types and other proteins.

Article Synopsis
  • The "relaxed tenodesis" technique aims to reduce tension on the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) to alleviate pain, especially in patients with work-related injuries.
  • A study involving 54 shoulders treated with this method showed favorable clinical and radiological outcomes, with 79% of patients suffering from rotator cuff tears.
  • At follow-up, most patients experienced significant improvements in shoulder function and low pain levels, indicating that relaxed biceps tenodesis is effective with a low failure rate.

Prescription drug coverage and effective coverage of three chronic conditions of high prevalence in Chile: Hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia.

PLoS One

February 2024

Centro de Epidemiología y Políticas de Salud, Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile.

Background: Access to medicines is a serious problem globally and in Chile. Despite the creation of coverage policies, part of the population with chronic conditions of high prevalence, still does not have access to the medicines it requires and disease control continues to be low. The objective of the study was to estimate the medication use and effective coverage for diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension in Chile, analyzing them according to sociodemographic variables and social determinants of health.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the characteristics and effects of the time taken to diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a Latin American cohort, noting that diagnosis can often be delayed and that SLE may resemble other diseases.
  • - Patients with longer diagnosis times (over 6 months) were often older, female, of Mestizo descent, uninsured, and displayed atypical symptoms, but this delayed diagnosis did not seem to affect their disease progression or mortality rates significantly.
  • - Overall, the research concludes that within this cohort, waiting up to 24 months for an SLE diagnosis, with a median of 6 months, did not lead to worse health outcomes.

Barriers and facilitators to access sexual and reproductive health services among young migrants in Tarapacá, Chile: a qualitative study.

BMC Public Health

February 2024

Centro de Salud Global Intercultural, Instituto de Ciencias e Innovación en Medicina, Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana, y Facultad de Psicología, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile.

Article Synopsis
  • Chile is a growing destination for migrants from Latin America, and young migrants face significant barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare services due to their unique experiences of adapting to a new country and reaching adulthood.
  • A qualitative study in the Tarapacá region involved interviews with 25 young migrants and 10 health workers, revealing that structural issues in the healthcare system and narrow sexual health approaches contribute to these barriers.
  • Additionally, stereotypes about young migrants, particularly from the Caribbean, lead to discrimination and mistreatment in healthcare settings, while positive factors like community interventions can help improve access to services.

[Medical students and graduates' perceptions of preparation to face a patient's death].

Rev Med Chil

March 2023

Centro de Bioética, Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile.

Historically, death has been socially accepted, but for the last decades it has been hidden in hospitals, transforming physicians into "death specialists". Thus, medical graduates should feel prepared to assume this responsibility accompanying the patient and their family through the process. With this in consideration, the present work explores students' and graduates' perceptions of preparation to face a patient's death (SPEM) in a Chilean Medical school and identifies SPEM-associated characteristics.

Challenges for the prevention of hypertension among international migrants in Latin America: prioritizing the health of migrants in healthcare systems.

Front Public Health

January 2024

Centro de Salud Global Intercultural (CeSGI), Facultad de Medicina Clínica Alemana, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile.

Among the health priorities of international migrants, non-communicable diseases such as hypertension are of major interest due to their increasing prevalence, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. Previous evidence has reported a significant risk of hypertension in international migrants derived from multiple exposures during the migration process and at the destination, such as living conditions, health literacy and access to preventive services. Also, poorer disease control has been found compared to the local population.

  • A study involving 19 PPPD patients included psycho-cognitive tests focusing on spatial navigation and various cognitive functions, comparing their results to healthy controls and other vestibular patients.
  • The findings showed that PPPD patients had distinct challenges in spatial navigation and other visuospatial tasks, suggesting that impaired spatial cognitive abilities are central to the disorder and may contribute to symptom severity.

In recent years, there has been major interest in documenting RTS following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Despite women being at increased risk for ACL injuries and a global increase in women's participation in sports, research has not adequately focused on female athletes.

Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is a membrane-bound protein that suppresses tumor development yet also promotes metastasis. E-cadherin is important in CAV1-dependent tumor suppression and prevents CAV1-enhanced lung metastasis. Here, we used murine B16F10 and human A375 melanoma cells with low levels of endogenous CAV1 and E-cadherin to unravel how co-expression of E-cadherin modulates CAV1 function in vitro and in vivo in WT C57BL/6 or Rag-/- immunodeficient mice and how a pro-inflammatory environment generated by treating cells with prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) alters CAV1 function in the presence of E-cadherin.

Biomechanics as a discipline is ideally placed to increase awareness and participation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. A nationwide Biomechanics and Research Innovation Challenge (BRInC) centered on mentoring and role modeling was developed to engage high school girls (mentees) and early-mid-career women (mentors) in the field of biomechanics through the completion of a 100-day research and/or innovation project. This manuscript describes the development, implementation, and uptake of the inaugural BRInC program and synthesizes the research and innovation projects undertaken, providing a framework for adoption of this program within the global biomechanics community.
