Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the predominant nonmelanocytic skin cancer, with preservation of both function and aesthetics being essential during tumor removal. Existing surgical margin guidelines primarily target ill-defined BCCs prevalent in Western countries. Therefore, this study aims to demonstrate the efficacy of surgical removal, propose modified guidelines for wide excision tailored to Asian patients, and share experiences with various reconstruction methods.

Background: In most of the published plication techniques in face lift surgery, the vectors of plication are not entirely superiorly and vertically directed. The same applies with the deep plane, SMAS elevation techniques in the majority of which the vectors of traction are not superiorly vertically directed. The aging symptoms are mostly prominent at the anterior mobile face due to the gravity effect, and this is the area where attention should be focused to correct these symptoms following a face lift surgery.

Rejection monitoring in facial vascularized composite allotransplantation (fVCA) traditionally focuses on skin biopsies. However, mucosal rejection frequently presents with more pronounced signs of immune activity. To explore mechanistic differences between skin and mucosal rejection, rejection and non-rejection biopsies from allograft skin and oral mucosa of nine fVCA recipients were retrospectively analyzed using histology, multiplex immunostaining, and gene expression profiling, with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) quantified via mass cytometry (CyTOF).

Background: The medial epicanthal fold is a common ethnic trait in East Asian faces, and there is a significant demand for its correction for cosmetic reasons. Numerous epicanthoplasty techniques have been proposed; however, visible scarring and unnatural canthal shapes have been challenges. This study aimed to introduce a simpler approach for medial epicanthoplasty to address these issues and evaluate its outcomes.

Background: An aging population in combination with more gentle and less stressful surgical procedures leads to an increased number of operations on older patients. This collectively raises novel challenges due to higher age heavily impacting treatment. A major problem, emerging in up to 50% of cases, is perioperative delirium.

Backgrounds And Aims: Submental skin laxity (SSL), manifesting as sagging skin and double chin, can significantly affect patients' self-perception and social interactions. While surgical treatments exist, non-invasive methods are increasingly sought for their minimal recovery time. This study assesses the safety and effectiveness of a novel microwave-based device for treating SSL, aiming to provide long-term improvements in skin tightness and appearance.

Introduction: Quantitative neuromorphometry analysis of the peripheral nerve is paramount to nerve regeneration research. However, this technique relies upon accurate segmentation and determination of myelin and axonal area. Manual histological analysis methods are time- consuming, and subject to error and bias.

Introduction: Facial asymmetry, present in all human faces at varying degrees, plays a critical role in clinical fields such as orthodontics, orthognathic and plastic surgeries, and craniofacial reconstruction. Accurate quantification of facial asymmetry is essential for diagnosis, treatment planning, and post-surgical evaluation.
Material And Methods: This article examines contemporary methods for quantifying facial asymmetry, including two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) landmark-based approaches, surface curvature analysis, and advanced image-based techniques.

Objective: Post-surgical lip symmetry assessment is a key indicator of cleft repair success. Traditional methods rely on distances between anatomical landmarks, which are impractical for video analysis and overlook texture and appearance. We propose an artificial intelligence (AI) approach to automate this process, analyzing lateral lip morphology for a quantitative symmetry evaluation.

The formation and development of plastic zone in the surrounding rock is the essence of large deformation damage to the surrounding rock in deep, highly stressed roadway. The -850 m roadway of the Qujiang mine is laid flat longitudinally under the 805 working face and coal pillar, and under the influence of the mining movement of the upper working face and the pre-stressing pressure of the coal pillar, the periphery of the roadway is no longer a pure non-uniform stress field, but a non-uniform stress field with both vertical and horizontal dynamic pressure. Based on the Hoek-Brown strength criterion, the unified strength theory is modified and the nonlinear unified strength theory of rock is established by comprehensively considering the intermediate principal stress, rock properties and rock structure.

Bell's palsy (BP) is reported as the most common cause of facial paralysis, yet literature lacks a standardized definition of BP. To identify and categorize how the term "Bell's palsy" is defined and applied in published medical literature. Randomized controlled trials, clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and reviews containing "Bell's palsy" were identified in MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL databases from inception until April 2, 2024.

Lesions of the dorsal columns of the spinal cord in adult macaque monkeys lead to the loss of hand inputs and large-scale expansion of the face inputs in the hand region of the somatosensory cortex. Inputs from alternate spinal pathways do not reactivate the deafferented regions of area 3b. Here, we determined how transections of the dorsal columns done within a few days after birth affect the developing somatosensory cortex.

Background: Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) presentation includes gross distorted ramus, malposition temporomandibular joint, small glenoid fossa, distorted condyle and notch, malformed orbit, cupping ear or absent external ear, and facial nerve palsy. HFM is the second most prevalent congenital deformity of the face, with little literature from the South African population. This retrospective study elucidated the demographic characteristics and clinical presentations of HFM patients in a select South African population and compared it to the literature.

Bilateral preseptal cellulitis without accompanying sinusitis or skin trauma is uncommon. In this report, we present a case of bilateral preseptal cellulitis and an upper eyelid abscess in an otherwise healthy child. A nine-year-old girl presented with severe and progressive bilateral swelling of the upper lids that showed an unsatisfactory response to medical treatments (intravenous ceftazidime and vancomycin) and warranted a referral to our facility.

Nucleic acid therapeutics represent a highly promising treatment approach in modern medicine, treating diseases at the genetic level. However, these therapeutics face numerous challenges in practical applications, particularly regarding their stability, effectiveness, cellular uptake efficiency, and limitations in delivering them specifically to target tissues. To overcome these obstacles, researchers have developed various innovative delivery systems, including viral vectors, lipid nanoparticles, polymer nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles, protein carriers, exosomes, antibody oligonucleotide conjugates, and DNA nanostructure-based delivery systems.

The factors leading to mine water inrush accidents are mainly sources of water, water channels, and intensity of water inrush. Mine water rush depends mostly on whether damage leads to the overlying strata of the working face penetrating the overlying aquifer. There is therefore a need to characterize how the overlying strata of the coal seam roof fails and the development height of the water-conducting fracture zone during a roof water inrush incident.

Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is an important biomaterial for tissue defect repair, but its application in replacing missing brain tissue needs improvement. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used to treat various neurological diseases, but they face challenges when filling large tissue defects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of PLGA combined with MSCs transplantation on brain structure and neural function in rats with traumatic brain injury (TBI), and explore its possible mechanism.
