Charge eXchange Recombination Spectroscopy (CXRS) and Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostics based on a heating neutral beam have recently been installed on EAST to provide local measurements of ion temperature, velocity, and density. The system design features common light collection optics for CXRS and BES, background channels for the toroidal views, multi-chord viewing sightlines, and high throughput lens-based spectrometers with good signal to noise ratio for high time resolution measurements. Additionally, two spectrometers each has a tunable grating to observe any wavelength of interest are used for the CXRS and one utilizes a fixed-wavelength grating to achieve higher diffraction efficiency for the BES system.

The resonant multiple photon excitation of neutral niobium clusters using tunable infrared (IR) radiation leads to thermionic emission. By measuring the mass-resolved ionization yield as a function of IR wavenumber species selective IR spectra are obtained for Nb(n) (n = 5-20) over the 200-350 cm(-1) spectral range. The IR resonance-enhanced multiple photon ionization spectra obtained this way are in good agreement with those measured using IR photodissociation of neutral Nb(n)-Ar clusters.

The activation of methane by gas-phase transition metal cations (M(+)) has been studied extensively, both experimentally and using density functional theory (DFT). Methane is exothermically dehydrogenated by several 5d metal ions to form [M,C,2H](+) and H2. However, the structure of the dehydrogenation product has not been established unambiguously.

The gas-phase conformational preferences of the model dipeptides Z-Glu-OH and Z-Arg-OH have been studied in the low-temperature environment of a supersonic jet. IR-UV ion-dip spectra obtained using the free electron laser FELIX provide conformation-specific IR spectra, which in combination with density functional theory (DFT) allow us to determine the conformational structures of the peptides. Molecular dynamics modeling using simulated annealing generates a variety of low-energy structures, for which geometry optimization and frequency calculations are then performed using the B3LYP functional with the 6-311+G(d,p) basis set.

The conjugate base of para-coumaric acid, which can be conveniently generated in the gas phase by electrospray ionization (ESI), is a commonly used model system for the chromophore of the photoactive yellow protein. Here we report its gas-phase IR spectrum, which shows that the anion easily adopts a carboxylate structure lying 60 kJ/mol higher in energy than the global minimum phenoxide structure. Generation of the biologically more relevant phenoxide isomer by ESI can be achieved using dry acetonitrile as solvent.

A generic design and fabrication scheme of Mo/Si multilayer-grating phaseshift reflector systems is reported. Close to optimized extreme ultraviolet (EUV, λ=13.5 nm) reflectance values up to 64% are demonstrated, while the diffractive properties can be exploited in spectral filtering applications.

We show that, under the right conditions, one can make highly accurate polarization-based measurements without knowing the absolute polarization state of the probing light field. It is shown that light, passed through a randomly varying birefringent material has a well-defined orbit on the Poincar sphere, which we term a generalized polarization state, that is preserved. Changes to the generalized polarization state can then be used in place of the absolute polarization states that make up the generalized state, to measure the change in polarization due to a sample under investigation.

We report on the mechanisms of hydrogen-induced blistering of multilayer coatings. Blister formation is a result of highly localized delamination occurring at the two outermost metal-on-silicon interfaces. The number, size, and type of blisters formed varied depending on the composition and ion energy of the incident flux.

Infrared spectra of anionic b-type fragments generated by collision induced dissociation (CID) from deprotonated peptides are reported. Spectra of the b(2) fragments of deprotonated AlaAlaAla and AlaTyrAla have been recorded over the 800-1800 cm(-1) spectral range by multiple-photon dissociation (MPD) spectroscopy using an FTICR mass spectrometer in combination with the free electron laser FELIX. Structural characterization of the b-type fragments is accomplished by comparison with density functional theory calculated spectra at the B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) level for different isomeric structures.

We characterize the phase shift induced by reflection on a multilayer mirror in the extreme UV range (80-93 eV) using two techniques: one based on high order harmonic generation and attosecond metrology (reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions), and a second based on synchrotron radiation and measurements of standing waves (total electron yield). We find an excellent agreement between the results from the two measurements and a flat group delay shift (±40 as) over the main reflectivity peak of the mirror.

A mixed beam of hyperthermal N atoms and N(2) molecules was scattered from the N-covered Ag(111) surface held at 300 K. The angular distribution of scattered N atoms is very broad. In contrast, N(2) molecules exhibit a sharp angular distribution.

An intermediate frequency (IF) band digitizing radiometer system in the 100-200 GHz frequency range has been developed for Tokamak diagnostics and control, and other fields of research which require a high flexibility in frequency resolution combined with a large bandwidth and the retrieval of the full wave information of the mm-wave signals under investigation. The system is based on directly digitizing the IF band after down conversion. The enabling technology consists of a fast multi-giga sample analog to digital converter that has recently become available.

We report double-resonant IR/UV ion-dip spectroscopy of neutral gramicidin peptides in the gas phase. The IR spectra of gramicidin A and C, recorded in both the 1000 cm(-1) to 1800 cm(-1) and the 2700 to 3750 cm(-1) region, allow structural analysis. By studying this broad IR range, various local intramolecular interactions are probed, and complementary IR modes can be accessed.

IR spectroscopy is employed to study isolated adenine and its derivative 9-methyladenine in both their neutral and protonated forms. The IR spectra of neutral adenine and 9-methyladenine are measured in a molecular beam expansion via IR-UV ion-dip spectroscopy in the 525 to 1750 cm(-1) region. For adenine, UV excitation selects the 9H tautomer to give a conformer-selective IR spectrum.

High-resolution IR spectroscopy has been employed to study isolated, switchable [2]rotaxanes. IR absorption spectra of two-station rotaxanes, their separate thread, and macrocycle components, as well as those of the individual stations incorporated into the thread, have been measured in the 1800-1000 cm(-1) region. These spectra have been fully analyzed, aided by quantum chemical predictions of the IR spectra.

Ion and neutral parameters are determined in the high electron density, magnetized, hydrogen plasma beam of an ITER divertor relevant plasma via measurements of the n=2 excited neutrals. Ion rotation velocity (up to 7 km/s) and temperature (2-3 eV~T_{e}) are obtained from analysis of Hα spectra measured close to the plasma source. The methodology for neutral density determination is explained whereby measurements in the linear plasma beam of Pilot-PSI are compared to modeling.

Hyperthermal Ar atoms were scattered under grazing incidence (θ(i) = 60°) from a CO-saturated Ru(0001) surface held at 180 K. Collision-induced desorption involving the ejection of fast CO (∼1 eV) occurs. The angularly resolved in-plane CO desorption distribution has a peak along the surface normal.

The gas-phase infrared spectra of radical cationic and protonated corannulene were recorded by infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy using the IR free electron laser for infrared experiments. Electrospray ionization was used to generate protonated corannulene and an IRMPD spectrum was recorded in a Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer monitoring H-loss as a function of IR frequency. The radical cation was produced by 193-nm UV photoionization of the vapor of corannulene in a 3D quadrupole trap and IR irradiation produces H, H(2), and C(2)H(x) losses.

Structural characterization of protonated gas-phase ions of cysteine and dopamine by infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy using a free electron laser in combination with theory based on DFT calculations reveals the presence of two types of protonated dimer ions in the electrospray mass spectra of the metabolites. In addition to the proton-bound dimer of each species, the covalently bound dimer of cysteine (bound by a disulfide linkage) has been identified. The dimer ion of m/z 241 observed in the electrospray mass spectra of cysteine has been identified as protonated cystine by comparison of the experimental IRMPD spectrum to the IR absorption spectra predicted by theory and the IRMPD spectrum of a standard.

We investigated the damage mechanism of MoN/SiN multilayer XUV optics under two extreme conditions: thermal annealing and irradiation with single shot intense XUV pulses from the free-electron laser facility in Hamburg - FLASH. The damage was studied "post-mortem" by means of X-ray diffraction, interference-polarizing optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Although the timescale of the damage processes and the damage threshold temperatures were different (in the case of annealing it was the dissociation temperature of Mo2N and in the case of XUV irradiation it was the melting temperature of MoN) the main damage mechanism is very similar: molecular dissociation and the formation of N2, leading to bubbles inside the multilayer structure.

Hyperthermal Ar atoms were scattered from a Ru(0001) surface held at temperatures of 180, 400 and 600 K, and from a Ru(0001)-(1×1)D surface held at 114 and 180 K. The resultant angular intensity and energy distributions are complex. The in-plane angular distributions have narrow (FWHM ≤ 10°) near-specular peaks and additional off-specular features.

In this study we investigate how the hydrogen flux administered to amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C : H) samples influences the sticking probability of hydrocarbon radicals on these samples. We bombard a-C : H samples that were previously subjected to different hydrogen fluxes with hydrocarbon radicals. The energy of the radicals is 10 eV.

The first experiments on trapped rotaxanes are presented, combining collision induced fragmentation and in-trap laser spectroscopy. The intrinsic optical properties of three rotaxanes and their non-interlocked building blocks (thread and macrocycle) isolated in a quadrupolar ion trap are investigated. The excitation and relaxation processes under thermal activation as well as under photo-activation are addressed.
