German cockroaches (Blattella germanica (L.)) are a persistent pest in affordable housing and studies indicate that residents implement control on their own to deal with cockroaches within their homes. While many do-it-yourself (DIY) control options have proven ineffective, baits are widely considered to be a viable DIY solution for residents who do not have access to professional pest control services.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the effects of autologous serum plus artificial tears on corneal sensation and tear film stability in patients with mild to moderate xerophthalmia after cataract surgery.

Methods: A total of 150 patients with mild to moderate xerophthalmia after one-time cataract surgery from March 2022 to September 2023 were selected and randomly divided into a control group (n = 75) and a study group (n = 75). The control group was treated with artificial tears (polyvinyl alcohol eye drops), while the study group was given autologous serum plus artificial tears.

Background: The discharge practices from the intensive care unit exhibit heterogeneity and the recognition of eligible patients for discharge is often delayed. Recognizing the importance of safe discharge, which aims to minimize readmission and mortality, we developed a dynamic machine-learning model. The model aims to accurately identify patients ready for discharge, offering a comparison of its effectiveness with physician decisions in terms of safety and discrepancies in discharge readiness assessment.

Inter-facility transfers to an urban level 1 trauma center and rates of secondary overtriage.

Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg

January 2025

Delray Medical Center, Division of Trauma and Critical Care Services, 5352 Linton Boulevard, Delray Beach, FL, 33484, USA.

Purpose: Many patients originally transported to non-trauma centers (NTC) require transfer to a trauma center (TC) for treatment. The aim was to analyze injury characteristics and outcomes of transfer patients and investigate the secondary overtriage (SOT).

Methods: Study included 2,056 transfers to an urban level 1 TC between 01/2016 and 06/2020.

Comprehensive genetic analysis of tumors with exome or whole genome sequencing has enabled the identification of the genes that are recurrently mutated in cancer. This has stimulated a series of exciting advances over the past 15 years, guiding us to new molecular biomarkers and therapeutic targets among the common mature B-cell neoplasms. In particular, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular lymphoma (FL) and Burkitt lymphoma (BL) have each been the subject of considerable attention in this field.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) outcomes are heavily influenced by host immune activity with immune anti-tumor activity mitigated by PD-1/PD-L1 pathway engagement. Combination CD20-directed therapy plus PD-1 inhibition (PD-1i) increases T-cell tumor killing and NK-cell antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity (ADCC). Mounting evidence supports immune-priming using PD-1i before cancer-directed agents.

Purpose: Swallowing difficulties have a substantial impact on the burden experienced by care partners of individuals with neurodegenerative disease. Given this, there is a clear need to easily identify and quantify the unique aspects of swallowing-related burden. The purpose of this study was to establish the validity and reliability of the Caregiver Analysis of Reported Experiences with Swallowing Disorders (CARES) screening tool in care partners of individuals with neurodegenerative disease.

Despite available and effective prevention and treatment strategies for substance use disorders (SUD), drug overdose deaths in the US remain high. Further, limited public knowledge of SUD pharmacotherapies may contribute to increased stigmatization toward SUD medications and a lack of willingness to help people with SUD. This study evaluated knowledge and attitudes about SUD pharmacotherapies and willingness to help people with SUD among a sample of U.

Cell Wall Protein 2 as a Vaccine Candidate Protects Mice Against Infection.

Vaccines (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Molecular Medicine, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL 33620, USA.

Background/objectives: is a Gram-positive, spore-forming enteric pathogen that causes intestinal disorders, including inflammation and diarrhea, primarily through toxin production. Standard treatment options for infection (CDI) involve a limited selection of antibiotics that are not fully effective, leading to high recurrence rates. Vaccination presents a promising strategy for preventing both CDI and its recurrence.

New technology has opened opportunities for research and exploration of deep-water ecosystems, highlighting deep-sea coral reefs as a rich source of novel bioactive natural products. During our ongoing investigation of the chemodiversity of the Irish deep sea and the soft coral we report 12 unreported cadinene-like functionalized sesquiterpenes, anthoteibinenes F-Q. The metabolites were isolated using both bioassay- and H NMR-guided approaches.

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease affecting multiple organ systems and poses a diagnostic challenge due to its diverse clinical manifestations and absence of specific diagnostic tests. Currently, blood biomarkers such as ACE, sIL-2R, CD163, CCL18, serum amyloid A, and CRP are employed to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of sarcoidosis. Metabolomics holds promise for identifying highly sensitive and specific biomarkers.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor characterized by its ability to evade the immune system, hindering the efficacy of current immunotherapies. Recent research has highlighted the important role of immunosuppressive macrophages in the tumor microenvironment (TME) in driving this immune evasion. In this study, we are the first to identify as a key regulator of tumor-associated macrophage (TAM)-mediated immunosuppression in GBM.

Background/objectives: Peri-intubation hypotension is a known complication of endotracheal intubation. In the hospital setting, peri-intubation hypotension has been shown to increase hospital mortality and length of stay. The use of prophylactic vasopressors at the time of sedation induction to prevent peri-intubation hypotension has been raised.

Background: Symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) is the most dreaded complication after reperfusion therapy for acute ischemic stroke. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to estimate and compare risks of sICH after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) depending on the location of the large vessel occlusion, concomitant use of intravenous thrombolysis, timing of treatment, and core size.

Methods: Randomized controlled trials were included, following a comprehensive search of different databases from inception to 1 March 2024.

Graph Neural Networks in Brain Connectivity Studies: Methods, Challenges, and Future Directions.

Brain Sci

December 2024

Computational Neuroergonomics Laboratory, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems, University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL 32816, USA.

Brain connectivity analysis plays a crucial role in unraveling the complex network dynamics of the human brain, providing insights into cognitive functions, behaviors, and neurological disorders. Traditional graph-theoretical methods, while foundational, often fall short in capturing the high-dimensional and dynamic nature of brain connectivity. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have recently emerged as a powerful approach for this purpose, with the potential to improve diagnostics, prognostics, and personalized interventions.
