The structural complexity of the thalamus, due to its mixed composition of gray and white matter, make it challenging to disjoint and quantify each tissue contribution to the thalamic anatomy. This work promotes the use of partial-volume-based over probabilistic-based tissue segmentation approaches to better capture thalamic gray matter differences between patients at different stages of psychosis (early and chronic) and healthy controls. The study was performed on a cohort of 23 patients with schizophrenia, 41 with early psychosis and 69 age and sex-matched healthy subjects.

Recovering the T distribution from multi-echo T magnetic resonance (MR) signals is challenging but has high potential as it provides biomarkers characterizing the tissue micro-structure, such as the myelin water fraction (MWF). In this work, we propose to combine machine learning and aspects of parametric (fitting from the MRI signal using biophysical models) and non-parametric (model-free fitting of the T distribution from the signal) approaches to T relaxometry in brain tissue by using a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) for the distribution reconstruction. For training our network, we construct an extensive synthetic dataset derived from biophysical models in order to constrain the outputs with a priori knowledge of in vivo distributions.

Functional connectivity analyses are typically based on matrices containing bivariate measures of covariability, such as correlations. Brain metabolic changes in patients with treatment resistant schizophrenia treated with deep brain stimulation: A series of cases.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been found to be effective in treatment resistant neurological and psychiatric disorders. So far there has been only one completed trial in schizophrenia, in which seven treatment resistant patients received DBS in the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC, N = 4) or the nucleus accumbens (NAc, N = 3); four met symptomatic response criteria over the trial period. Six patients underwent 18 F-FDG PET at baseline and after at least 6 months of stimulation.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease causing motor symptoms along with cognitive and affective problems. Recent evidence suggests that HD also affects language across core levels of linguistic organization, including at stages of the disease when standardized neuropsychological test profiles are still normal and motor symptoms do not yet reach clinical thresholds ('pre-manifest HD'). Background: The brain functional correlates of autobiographical recall are well established, but have been little studied in schizophrenia. Additionally, autobiographical memory is one of a small number of cognitive tasks that activates rather than de-activates the default mode network, which has been found to be dysfunctional in this disorder.
