Background: Topical antiseptics are crucial for preventing infections and reducing transmission of pathogens. However, commonly used antiseptic agents have been reported to cause cross-resistance to other antimicrobials in bacteria, which has not yet been described in yeasts. This study aims to assess the in vitro efficacy of antiseptics against clinical and reference isolates of Candida albicans and Nakaseomyces glabratus, and whether prolonged exposure to antiseptics promotes the development of antifungal (cross)resistance.

Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Differently Processed Smoothies and Fresh Produce from Austria.

Plant-derived foods are potential vehicles for microbial antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can be transferred to the human microbiome if consumed raw or minimally processed. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the amount of clinically relevant ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in differently processed smoothies (freshly prepared, cold-pressed, pasteurized and high-pressure processed) and fresh produce samples (organically and conventionally cultivated) to assess potential health hazards associated with their consumption. The MGE and the class 1 integron-integrase gene were detected by probe-based qPCR in concentrations up to 10 copies/mL in all smoothies, lettuce, carrots and a single tomato sample.

Here, the integration of a valuable step as an upcycling technology using biological waste from the 5th instar BSF larvae processing as a source of bioactive chitosan was explored. The goal is to pave the way for sustainable chitosan production from insect-based resources in addition to proteins, lipids, and fertilizers.

Background: Adherence to physiotherapeutic treatment and recommendations is crucial to achieving planned goals and desired health outcomes. This overview of systematic reviews synthesises the wide range of additional interventions and behaviour change techniques used in physiotherapy, exercise therapy and physical therapy to promote adherence and summarises the evidence of their efficacy.

Methods: Seven databases (PEDro, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO and CINAHL) were systematically searched with terms related to physiotherapy, motivation, behaviour change, adherence and efficacy (last searched on January 31, 2023).

American Bashkir Curly Horses are claimed to be hypoallergenic, but this has not been clinically proven. In the present study, the effect of exposure to Curly Horses was investigated in 141 patients allergic to horses by measuring their lung function and nasal patency during Curly Horse contact. Continuous contact with Curly Horses, including riding and brushing, decreased the allergic riders' reactivity as measured by FEV, PEF, and PNIF.

Sensitive, reliable and fast diagnostic tools that are applicable in low-resource settings, at the point of care (PoC), are seen as crucial in the fight against visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Introduction: Patients with haemophilia (PWH) have traditionally been discouraged from engaging in sports and strenuous exercise activities, due to the perceived risk of bleeding complications. This puts PWH at an increased risk to become overweight or obese. However, the benefits of many forms of physical activity seem to outweigh their risks, although activities with significant trauma risk should be avoided.

We performed comprehensive and systematic screening studies, in order to identify conditions that favor the electrostatic interaction of such peptides with lipid membranes.

The inclusion of rehabilitation clients with communication and/or cognitive impairments after stroke in person-centred goal-setting is challenging. Moreover, this group of clients has largely been excluded from studies, resulting in a lack of knowledge about how to optimize their participation. The aim of this study was to explore strategies that are used in rehabilitation to involve stroke survivors with communication and/or cognitive impairment in person-centred goal-setting.

The harvest of a bench scale high cell density fermentation of Pichia pastoris, using standard laboratory equipment, to process products from supernatant is described. The process consists of a centrifugation step and a depth filtration, followed by a (sterile) membrane filtration. The procedure yields supernatant ready for the next purification step such as chromatography.
