UNIPRO-Oral Pathology and Rehabilitation Research Unit, University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS), Cooperativa de Ensino Superior Politécnico e Universitário (CESPU), Rua Central de Gandra, 1317, 4585-116 Gandra, Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Head and neck cancer (HNC), particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is increasingly prevalent and often resistant to standard treatments like surgery and chemotherapy.
  • The research focuses on combining Cetuximab, an EGFR inhibitor, with other small molecules that target mitotic proteins (MPS-1, Aurora-B, KSP) to improve cancer treatment effectiveness.
  • Results indicate that this combination enhances cancer cell death and shows significant clinical relevance, suggesting a new strategy to tackle OSCC more effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the resilience of individuals with traumatic spinal cord injuries using two specific resilience scales (CD-RISC-10 and RS-14) and to assess the relationship between resilience and various demographic factors.
  • - Conducted with 254 adults, the research found that the average resilience scores were moderate, with significant correlations between the two scales, but no associations with sociodemographic factors like gender or income.
  • - The findings highlight the importance of understanding resilience in spinal cord injury patients to improve care but indicate that resilience levels aren't influenced by common demographic variables.

NACNet: A histology context-aware transformer graph convolution network for predicting treatment response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Comput Med Imaging Graph

December 2024

Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Georgia State University, Atlanta, 30303, GA, USA; Department of Computer Science, Georgia State University, Atlanta, 30303, GA, USA; Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, Atlanta, 30322, GA, USA. Electronic address:

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) response prediction for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients is a challenging task clinically as it requires understanding complex histology interactions within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Digital whole slide images (WSIs) capture detailed tissue information, but their giga-pixel size necessitates computational methods based on multiple instance learning, which typically analyze small, isolated image tiles without the spatial context of the TME. To address this limitation and incorporate TME spatial histology interactions in predicting NAC response for TNBC patients, we developed a histology context-aware transformer graph convolution network (NACNet).

Center of Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, and Innovation-CeNano2I, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Federal University of Minas Gerais, UFMG, Av. Presidente Antônio Carlos, 6627-Escola de Engenharia, Bloco 2-Sala 2233, Belo Horizonte 31270-901, MG, Brazil.

Wound healing is important for skin after deep injuries or burns, which can lead to hospitalization, long-term morbidity, and mortality. In this field, tissue-engineered skin substitutes have therapy potential to assist in the treatment of acute and chronic skin wounds, where many requirements are still unmet. Hence, in this study, a novel type of biocompatible ternary polymer hybrid hydrogel scaffold was designed and produced through an entirely eco-friendly aqueous process composed of carboxymethyl cellulose, chitosan, and polyvinyl alcohol and chemically cross-linked by citric acid, forming three-dimensional (3D) matrices, which were biofunctionalized with L-arginine (L-Arg) to enhance cellular adhesion.

Carmaphycin B-Based Proteasome Inhibitors to Treat Human African Trypanosomiasis: Structure-Activity Relationship and Efficacy.

ACS Infect Dis

December 2024

Center for Discovery and Innovation in Parasitic Diseases, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, California 92093, United States.

The proteasome is essential for eukaryotic cell proteostasis, and inhibitors of the 20S proteasome are progressing preclinically and clinically as antiparasitics. We screened, the causative agent of human and animal African trypanosomiasis, with a set of 27 carmaphycin B analogs, irreversible epoxyketone inhibitors that were originally developed to inhibit the20S (Pf20S). The structure-activity relationship was distinct from that of the human c20S antitarget by the acceptance of d-amino acids at the P3 position of the peptidyl backbone to yield compounds with greatly decreased toxicity to human cells.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, can bring health benefits to the host. Most of these organisms are found naturally in the human gastrointestinal tract. Escherichia coli strains Nissle 1917 (EcN), and CEC15 have shown beneficial effects in murine models of intestinal inflammation, such as colitis and mucositis.

Department of General Pathology, Institute of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Av. Pres. Antônio Carlos, 6627, Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, 31270-901, MG, Brazil.

New diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been increasingly demanded due to the high morbidity and mortality associated with breast cancer. Recently, changes in the collagen fibres in mammary neoplasms have been shown to provide information that can be helpful for more accurate diagnosis. We aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of the tumour stroma in human and canine mammary neoplasms to assess the relationship between collagen modifications and the behaviour of carcinomas in both species, by multiphoton microscopy.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Postgraduate Program in Sanitation, Environment and Water Resources, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil; Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. Electronic address:

The collapse of the dam in the Paraopeba River watershed in 2019 triggered significant concerns regarding water quality in the region. This study aimed to assess, five years after the disaster, the effects on water quality and understand the underlying factors of environmental pressure contributing to the observed changes. To perform the evaluation, the study utilized surface water quality data pre-disaster (2012-2018) and post-disaster (2019-2023), environmental data regarding the identification of high-polluting potential industries operating in the region of interest, and land use for the watershed as a combined evaluation.

Fat is an essential component of meat which contributes to its sensory characteristics. Therefore, producing cultivated fat is essential to replicate the texture, flavor, and juiciness of conventional meat. One of the challenges in obtaining cultivated fat is that once adipocytes reach differentiation in culture, they tend to float.

In general, mercury (Hg) undergoes biomagnification in aquatic systems. The absence of Hg biomagnification in a certain aquatic environment constitutes an exceptional finding and this seems to be the case for Sepetiba Bay, in Rio de Janeiro state (RJ), Brazil. There are three distinct ecological populations of Guiana dolphins in the Sepetiba Bay (SB)-Ilha Grande Bay (IGB) Complex, inhabiting: (1) the inner part of SB; (2) SB entrance; and (3) IGB.
