Next generation brain health: transforming global research and public health to promote prevention of dementia and reduce its risk in young adult populations.

Lancet Healthy Longev

December 2024

Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI), Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland; Centre for Dementia Research, School of Health, Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, UK.

Efforts to prevent dementia can benefit from precision interventions delivered to the right population at the right time; that is, when the potential to reduce risk is the highest. Young adults (aged 18-39 years) are a neglected population in dementia research and policy making despite being highly exposed to several known modifiable risk factors. The risk and protective factors that have the biggest effect on dementia outcomes in young adulthood, and how these associations differ across regions and groups, still remain unclear.

Hydrochlorothiazide (HTZ) is a thiazide-type diuretic drug approved by the FDA in 1959 for treatment of hypertension and peripheral edema and has been used since. HTZ exhibits low solubility and low permeability, leading to variable oral bioavailability and limited intestinal drug permeability. For this reason, several attempts to improve HTZ physicochemical properties have been made during the past decades.

Regrettably, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains the deadliest form of brain cancer, where the early diagnosis plays a pivotal role in the patient's therapy and prognosis. Hence, we report for the first time the design, synthesis, and characterization of new hybrid organic-inorganic stimuli-responsive nanoplexes (NPX) for bioimaging and killing brain cancer cells (GBM, U-87). These nanoplexes were built through coupling two nanoconjugates, produced using a facile, sustainable, green aqueous colloidal process ("bottom-up").

Transthyretin (TTR) is a vertebrate-exclusive transport protein that plays a key role in binding and distributing thyroid hormones. However, its evolutionary origin lies in the duplication of the gene that encoding the enzyme 5-hydroxyisourate hydrolase (HIUase), which is involved in uric acid metabolism. Unlike TTR, HIUase is ubiquitous in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, with the exception of hominids.

Buffalo milk quality: a study of seasonal influence on composition and somatic cell count.

J Dairy Sci

December 2024

Department of Food Technology and Inspection, School of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil; Avenida Antônio Carlos, 6627, Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. 31270-901; Laboratory of Milk Quality Analysis; School of Veterinary Medicine, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil; Avenida Antonio Carlos, 6627, Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. 31270-901. Electronic address:

Despite buffalo milk being an important food worldwide, not much is known about factors that influence its quality on Brazilian buffalo milk farms. It ranks second in total volume of milk production, with cow milk in first place, but a lack of minimum legal parameters for buffalo milk is another problem faced by some countries, as it happens in Brazil where buffalo population represents less than one percent of dairy cows, even though Brazilian buffalo herd is one of the largest in Latin America, with a successful dairy processing chain. This study investigated the composition and somatic cell counts (SCC) of buffalo milk produced in a high-altitude tropical region in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, where buffalo calving naturally happens from February to May.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disease most frequently characterized by a neuromyelitis optica (NMO) phenotype, comprising both simultaneous or sequential optic neuritis (ON) and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM). Symptoms of brainstem, diencephalic and cerebral involvement may also occur. While most NMOSD patients test positive for serum aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies, some seronegative patients test positive for oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-IgG (MOG-IgG).

Background And Aims: To better understand C4 evolution in monocots, we characterized C3-C4 intermediate phenotypes in the grass genus Homolepis (subtribe Arthropogoninae).

Methods: Carbon isotope ratio (δ13C), leaf gas exchange, mesophyll (M) to bundle sheath (BS) tissue characteristics, organelle size and numbers in M and BS tissue, and tissue distribution of the P-subunit of glycine decarboxylase (GLDP) were determined for five Homolepis species and the C4 grass Mesosetum loliiforme from a phylogenetic sister clade. We generated a transcriptome-based phylogeny for Homolepis and Mesosetum species to interpret physiological and anatomical patterns in an evolutionary context, and to test for hybridization.

Arterial stiffening is associated with adverse cardiovascular patient outcomes; stiffness may also be associated with postsurgical events and has been suggested to be a fundamental mechanism in the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms. Although open repair of aneurysms decreases aortic stiffness, implantation of a rigid endograft is associated with increased aortic stiffness after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). This review provides an overview of aortic wall physiology and the contemporary understanding of aortic stiffness and its implications for patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Lifetime Data Anal

December 2024

Statistics Department, Exact Sciences Institute, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

We propose a new class of bivariate survival models based on the family of Archimedean copulas with margins modeled by the Yang and Prentice (YP) model. The Ali-Mikhail-Haq (AMH), Clayton, Frank, Gumbel-Hougaard (GH), and Joe copulas are employed to accommodate the dependency among marginal distributions. Baseline distributions are modeled semiparametrically by the Piecewise Exponential (PE) distribution and the Bernstein polynomials (BP).
