External beam radiotherapy is a treatment modality that employs high doses for curative or palliative purposes. Safety in such treatments, particularly with high-precision equipment, necessitates strict adherence to quality control protocols to ensure the efficacy of oncological treatments. In this context, chemical dosimeters, particularly the Fricke gel, have emerged as valuable tools for quantitatively analysing absorbed radiation doses.

Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a multifaceted concept that surpasses an exclusively clinical perception and includes functional, social, emotional, and environmental issues. The measure of OHRQoL represents a holistic approach for research and clinical practice. Negative impacts of oral conditions on OHRQoL in childhood can reflect on health development, especially in a life stage marked by social and cognitive maturation.

Tooth hypersensitivity is a common symptom in molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) patients and can affect children's quality of life. During daily routine, children with MIH often report sensitivity to various thermal and mechanical stimuli, and difficulty in achieving effective analgesia is a common issue becoming a challenge for dentists. Research has focused on the possible pathophysiological mechanisms behind this phenomenon, which, in turn, have not been determined.

Background: P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) are multidrug resistance (MDR) transporters that function as placental gatekeepers, lowering the fetal levels of diverse xenobiotics and toxins that may be circulating in the maternal blood throughout pregnancy. Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) and the placenta previa (PP) disorders are obstetric pathologies encompassed by an abnormal invasion of chorionic villous tissue in the uterine wall or at the endocervical os, respectively. Given the fact that MDR transporters are involved in placentation and are highly responsive to inflammation, we hypothesized that immunostaining of P-gp and BCRP would be altered in PAS and in PP specimens.

Purpose: Evidence from animal and human studies demonstrates that cortical regions play a key role in autonomic modulation with a differential role for some brain regions located in the left and right brain hemispheres. Known as autonomic asymmetry, this phenomenon has been demonstrated by clinical observations, by experimental models, and currently by combined neuroimaging and direct recordings of sympathetic nerve activity. Previous studies report peculiar autonomic-mediated cardiovascular alterations following unilateral damage to the left or right insula, a multifunctional key cortical region involved in emotional processing linked to autonomic cardiovascular control and featuring asymmetric characteristics.

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) remains a challenge in healthcare, contributing to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and adverse patient outcomes, including mortality. Effective preoperative skin disinfection interventions, such as povidone-iodine (PVI) and chlorhexidine (CHG), are widely used but their efficacy remains debated. To address this gap, this meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy of PVI and CHG.

Severe mental illnesses (SMI), especially schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD), are associated with significant distress to patients, reduced life expectancy and a higher cost of care. There is growing evidence that SMI may increase the risk of dementia in later life, posing an additional challenge in the management of these patients. SMI present a complex and highly heterogeneous pathophysiology, which has hampered the understanding of its underlying pathological mechanisms and limited the success of the available therapies.

Soil conservation adheres to various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while in Brazil is a constitutional obligation. To attain the goals and fulfil the obligation, laws, policies, governance and science must be imbricated to deliver suitable conservation solutions for the long term, namely appropriate to positively influence other downstream chains such as the food chain. However, in Brazil, a major world producer and exporter of food, weaknesses were recently diagnosed by judicial authorities concerning soil governance and coordinated land use policies.

Whole-genome sequencing identified three previously unidentified multilocus sequence types of (ST-12332) and (ST-12333 and ST-12663), harboring resistance genes for multiple antimicrobial classes. The sources of isolation highlight the circulation of resistance strains within animals and humans, emphasizing the need for preventive measures.

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a Mendelian disorder characterized by a point mutation in the β-globin gene that leads to sickling of erythrocytes. Several studies have shown that absolute neutrophil count is strongly associated with clinical severity of SCD, suggesting an apparent role of white blood cells (WBC) in SCD pathology. However, the mechanism by which genetic variants lead to WBC count differences in SCD patients remains unclear.
