Head and neck cancer (HNC), the sixth most common cancer worldwide, is increasing in incidence, with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) as the predominant subtype. OSCC mainly affects middle-aged to elderly males, often occurring on the posterior lateral border of the tongue, leading to significant disfigurement and functional impairments, such as swallowing and speech difficulties. Despite advancements in understanding OSCC's genetic and epigenetic variations, survival rates for advanced stages remain low, highlighting the need for new treatment options.

Echocardiography is a reliable and non-invasive method for assessing cardiac structure and function in both clinical and experimental settings, offering valuable insights into disease progression and treatment efficacy. The successful application of echocardiography in murine models of disease has enabled the evaluation of disease severity, drug testing, and continuous monitoring of cardiac function in these animals. However, there is insufficient standardization of echocardiographic measurements for smaller animals.

Inventory of sensory, emotional, and cognitive reserve (SECri): Proposal of a new instrument and preliminary data.

Appl Neuropsychol Adult

September 2024

Laboratory of Neuropsychophysiology, Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal.

A new model of reserve, the Sensory, Emotional, and Cognitive Reserve (SEC) model, has been recently proposed, but so far this model has not been operationalized in instruments to evaluate the different domains of the reserve. This study introduces the SEC reserve inventory (SECri) along with preliminary data obtained from a study involving 57 adults, aged 35 and older. The SECri assesses the SEC domains using specific proxies: (a) sensory reserve (SR) through sensory acuity and sensory perception proxies; (b) emotional reserve (ER) through life events, resilience, and emotional regulation proxies; and (c) cognitive reserve (CR) through education, occupation, socioeconomic status, bilingualism, leisure activities, and personality traits proxies.

  • Childhood obesity is increasingly recognized as a significant global health issue, with environmental influences playing a role in its development.
  • A study involving 63 adolescents examined pupillary responses to auditory food vs. nonfood words, using a remote eye-tracking device to measure changes in pupil size.
  • Results showed that healthy-weight adolescents exhibited greater pupil dilation to food words compared to those with obesity, who had a similar response to both food and nonfood cues; this suggests the need to explore psychological factors affecting these responses in future research.

Phytate Effects on Incomplete Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis.

J Clin Med

August 2024

Laboratory of Renal Lithiasis Research, University Institute of Health Sciences Research (IUNICS), University of Balearic Islands, 07122 Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Adults who have incomplete distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) may present with recurrent urolithiasis due to metabolic acidosis, leading to bone resorption, which in turn causes hypercalciuria and urine alkalinization (pH > 6.0). Oral potassium citrate is the most commonly used treatment for dRTA, but some patients cannot tolerate this treatment.

Advancements in understanding pain physiopathology have historically challenged animals' absence of pain senses. Studies have demonstrated that animals have comparable neural pain pathways, suggesting that cats and dogs likely experience pain similarly to humans. Understanding brain circuits for effective pain control has been crucial to adjusting pain management to the patient's individual responses and current condition.

Electronic address:

The widely used chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) has been associated with adverse effects on the skeletal muscle, which can persist for years after the end of the treatment. These adverse effects may be exacerbated in older patients, whose skeletal muscle might already be impaired by aging. Nonetheless, the mediators responsible for DOX-induced myotoxicity are still largely unidentified, particularly the ones involved in the long-term effects that negatively affect the quality of life of the patients.

  • The CALCIPHYX trial tested hexasodium fytate, a potential treatment for calciphylaxis, a rare condition causing painful skin lesions, in a double-blind, placebo-controlled setting.
  • Out of the randomised patients, both those receiving hexasodium fytate and the placebo group showed similar improvements in wound assessment and pain scores after 12 weeks, indicating no significant benefit from the treatment over placebo.
  • Serious adverse events were lower in the fytate group compared to the placebo group, suggesting that hexasodium fytate may be safer, but there was no substantial difference in healing or pain reduction between the two groups.
