Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors plus chemotherapy have been the standard of care in the first-line treatment of advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) adenocarcinoma; however, the survival benefits are modest in patients with low programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Here we investigated the efficacy and safety of cadonilimab (PD-1/cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) bispecific antibody) plus chemotherapy as first-line treatment in G/GEJ adenocarcinoma. The prespecified interim analysis is reported here.

Prevalence of malnutrition among adult inpatients in China: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Methods: We retrieved 618 articles published between 2014 and 2024 from the Web of Science database and analyzed them using R software, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace.

Persistent bacterial lung infections in children lead to significant morbidity and mortality due to antibiotic resistance. In this paper, we describe how phage therapy has shown remarkable efficacy in preclinical and clinical studies, demonstrating significant therapeutic benefits through various administration routes. Ongoing trials are evaluating its safety and effectiveness against different pathogens.

Prosthetic Double Valve Endocarditis Caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae Due to Overwhelming Post-Splenectomy Infection (OPSI) in a Pre-Vaccine Licensure Era: A Case Report.

Overwhelming post-splenectomy infection (OPSI) is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition that can occur in patients undergoing splenectomy. We report a case of a patient who had a splenectomy approximately 30 years ago during prosthetic valve insertion for infective endocarditis (IE). The patient later developed prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae associated with OPSI.

Behavioral interventions targeting treatment adherence in chronic kidney disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Adherence to dialysis, medication regimens and dietary and fluid intake recommendations can improve quality of life and survival in chronic kidney disease, but non-adherence is prevalent. This review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of behavioral interventions on treatment adherence in chronic kidney disease and examined intervention characteristics (Behavior Change Techniques and delivery methods) associated with direct and indirect measures of adherence. Literature searches in five databases identified 149 eligible studies (255 study arms; 15878 patients).

Abelacimab versus Rivaroxaban in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.

Background: Abelacimab is a fully human monoclonal antibody that binds to the inactive form of factor XI and blocks its activation. The safety of abelacimab as compared with a direct oral anticoagulant in patients with atrial fibrillation is unknown.

Methods: Patients with atrial fibrillation and a moderate-to-high risk of stroke were randomly assigned, in a 1:1:1 ratio, to receive subcutaneous injection of abelacimab (150 mg or 90 mg once monthly) administered in a blinded fashion or oral rivaroxaban (20 mg once daily) administered in an open-label fashion.

A Multipotent PROX1+ Tumor Stem/Progenitor Cell Population Emerges During Intestinal Tumorigenesis and Mediates Radioresistance in Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) progression is associated with an increase in PROX1+ tumor cells, which exhibit features of CRC stem cells and contribute to metastasis. Here, we aimed to provide a better understanding to the function of PROX1+ cells in CRC, investigating their progeny and their role in therapy resistance. PROX1+ cells in intestinal adenomas of ApcMin/+ mice expressed intestinal epithelial and CRC stem cell markers, and cells with high PROX1 expression could both self-renew tumor stem/progenitor cells and contribute to differentiated tumor cells.
