The medial septum (MS) contributes in pain processing and regulation, especially concerning persistent nociception. However, the role of MS glutamatergic neurons in pain and the underlying neural circuit mechanisms in pain remain poorly understood. In this study, chronic constrictive injury of the sciatic nerve (CCI) surgery was performed to induce thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia in mice.

The cochlea hair cells transform mechanic sounds to neural signals with a remarkable sensitivity and resolution. This is achieved via the precisely sculpted mechanotransduction apparatus of the hair cells and the supporting structure of the cochlea. The shaping of the mechanotransduction apparatus, the staircased stereocilia bundles on the apical surface of the hair cells, requires an intricate regulatory network including planar cell polarity (PCP) and primary cilia genes in orienting stereocilia bundles and building molecular machinery of the apical protrusions.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common inflammatory disease in otolaryngology, mainly manifested as nasal congestion, nasal discharge, facial pain/pressure, and smell disorder. CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), an important phenotype of CRS, has a high recurrence rate even after receiving corticosteroids and/or functional endoscopic sinus surgery. In recent years, clinicians have focused on the application of biological agents in CRSwNP.

Genetic alterations are a major cause of microphthalmos, while novel-related genes and mutations in microphthalmos have rarely been explored. To identify the underlying genetic defect responsible for microphthalmos eyes in two three-generation Chinese families, we screened 425 genes involved in common inherited non-syndromic eye diseases with next-generation sequencing-based target capture sequencing of the two probands of two three-generation Chinese families diagnosed with microphthalmos. Variants were filtered and analyzed to identify possible disease-causing variants before Sanger sequencing validation.

Background: The study aims to investigate the relationship between the volume-accumulated reflectivity (termed "integral") on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and cone density on adaptive optics (AO) imaging.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, both eyes of 32 healthy subjects and 5 patients with inherited retinal diseases (IRD) were studied. The parameter, integral, was defined as the volume-accumulated reflectivity values in a selected region on OCT images; integrals of the ellipsoid zone (EZ) and interdigitation zone (IZ) were measured at 2°, 3°, 4°, 5°and 6° eccentricity along the four meridians on fovea-centered OCT B-scans.

As one of the most common congenital neck masses, thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) developed from the residual ductal epithelial cells in any remnants of thyroglossal duct. However, the reports of double TGDCs were rare. A 60-year-old male was referred to our department because of the presentation of an anterior neck mass.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) in protecting retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and promoting axonal regeneration, and to explore its potential molecular mechanisms. We used three-dimensional retinal culture system and optic nerve crush (ONC) rat models in this study. The pro-axonal regenerative effect of 7,8-DHF was determined with light microscopy observation and immunofluorescence staining of Thy1.

Objective: To investigate the efficiency of additional intraoperative endoscopic inspection in reducing residual cholesteatoma in pediatric cholesteatoma involving the mastoid treated with classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty.
Materials And Methods: 32 cases of pediatric cholesteatoma involving the mastoid were enrolled in this perspective study and treated with classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty. Transmastoid posterior tympanotomy, atticotomy and transecting tendon of tympani tensor were conducted to achieve adequate visualization of hidden spaces in the middle ear.
