Mir-204-5p alleviates mitochondrial dysfunction by targeting IGFBP5 in diabetic cataract.

Mol Biol Rep

June 2024

State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Eye Institute of Shandong First Medical University, Qingdao, China.

Background: Cataract contributes to visual impairment worldwide, and diabetes mellitus accelerates the formation and progression of cataract. Here we found that the expression level of miR-204-5p was diminished in the lens epithelium with anterior lens capsule of cataract patients compared to normal donors, and decreased more obviously in those of diabetic cataract (DC) patients. However, the contribution and mechanism of miR-204-5p during DC development remain elusive.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Drugs for treating eye diseases often need to be injected rather than administered topically due to protective barriers in the eye.
  • This study explores the use of exosomes derived from human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) for treating experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU), a model for eye autoimmune diseases.
  • The research shows that topical application of modified exosomes penetrates the eye barriers more effectively and can improve outcomes for EAU, suggesting a new non-invasive treatment approach.

Purpose: Fungal keratitis (FK) is an invasive corneal infection associated with significant risk to vision. Although the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway has been recognized for its role in defending against viral infections, its involvement in FK still remains largely unclear. This study sought to elucidate the contribution of the cGAS/STING signaling pathway to the pathogenesis of FK.

Cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthetase/stimulator of interferon genes signaling aggravated corneal allograft rejection through neutrophil extracellular traps.

September 2024

State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Eye Institute of Shandong First Medical University, Medical Department of Qingdao University, Qingdao, Shandong, China. Electronic address:

The activation of innate immunity following transplantation has been identified as a crucial factor in allograft inflammation and rejection. However, the role of cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate synthase (cGAS)/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling-mediated innate immunity in the pathogenesis of allograft rejection remains unclear. Utilizing a well-established murine model of corneal transplantation, we demonstrated increased expression of cGAS and STING in rejected-corneal allografts compared with syngeneic (Syn) and normal (Nor) corneas, along with significant activation of the cGAS/STING pathway, as evidenced by the enhanced phosphorylation of TANK-binding kinase 1and interferon regulatory factor 3.

Eye Institute of Shandong First Medical University, Qingdao Eye Hospital of Shandong First Medical University, State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, School of Ophthalmology, Shandong First Medical University, Qingdao 266071, China.

In order to decelerate the growth of myopia in children and adolescents and reduce the risks of associated eye complications, extensive research has been conducted on preventive measures, including optical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical interventions. Spectacle lenses, due to their safety, convenience, and high patient compliance, stand out as the most common method for correcting refractive errors compared to other interventions. As far as we know, various forms of spectacle lenses are currently used in clinical practice, including bifocal lenses, progressive multifocal lenses, peripheral defocus lenses, defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) lenses, highly aspherical lenslets, diffusion optics technology lenses, and violet light transmission (VL) glasses.

Corneal transplantation represents the primary therapeutic approach for managing corneal endothelial dysfunction, but corneal donors remain scarce. Anterior chamber cell injection emerges as a highly promising alternative strategy for corneal transplantation, with pluripotent stem cells (PSC) demonstrating considerable potential as an optimal cell source. Nevertheless, only a few studies have explored the differentiation of functional corneal endothelial-like cells originating from PSC.
