J Control Release

January 2025

Oujiang Laboratory (Zhejiang Lab for Regenerative Medicine, Vision and Brain Health), Cixi Biomedical Research Institute, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Wenzhou Medical University, Ningbo, China. Electronic address:

Severe corneal injuries can cause visual impairment even blindness. Surgically stitching or implanting biomaterials have been developed, but their implementation requires professional surgeons, failing to address the immediate need of medical treatment. The pressing challenge lies in developing multifunctional biomaterials that enable self-management of corneal injuries.

Electronic address:

Hyaluronic acid (HA) nanogels have attracted widespread attention, aiming to improve cancer treatment paradigms and overcome the limitations of free-form drugs. However highly hydrophilic nature of HA nanogels limits their potential application where amphiphilic interactions are required for the delivery of hydrophobic drugs. In this study, we developed amphiphilic structure oxaliplatin (OXA) loaded oligo-hyaluronic acid (oHA)-PEG-Octane nanogel using stable disulfide bonds with ultrasonic re-emulsion method.

Binocular Visual Deficits at Low to High Spatial Frequency in Intermittent Exotropia After Surgery.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

August 2024

National Engineering Research Center of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Eye Hospital Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, China.

Purpose: To investigate binocular visual deficits at low to high spatial frequencies in patients with intermittent exotropia (IXT) after surgical correction, using the binocular orientation combination task.

Methods: Thirteen patients whose IXT has been aligned surgically (17 ± 4.8 years old; 7 females) and 13 normal individuals (21.

Bacterial infection can impede the healing of chronic wounds, particularly diabetic wounds. The high-sugar environment of diabetic wounds creates a favorable condition for bacterial growth, posing a challenge to wound healing. In clinical treatment, the irregular shape of the wound and the poor mechanical properties of traditional gel adjuvants make them susceptible to mechanical shear and compression, leading to morphological changes and fractures, and difficult to adapt to irregular wounds.

Immobilized Urease Vector System Based on the Dynamic Defect Regeneration Strategy for Efficient Urea Removal.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

August 2024

Key Laboratory of Bioactive Materials, Ministry of Education, College of Life Sciences, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on improving the removal of urea, which can lead to renal diseases if it accumulates excessively, by developing a composite system called MCC@UiO/U that combines urease and a metal-organic framework.
  • - MCC@UiO/U achieves impressive urea removal efficiency, reaching a clearance rate of over 80% and effectively clearing urea from renal patients' peritoneal dialyzate within 2 hours, with a capacity of up to 1500 mg/g.
  • - The new composite shows excellent bioactivity, maintaining its performance even after 5 usage cycles, indicating strong stability and biocompatibility, which could lead to innovative clinical applications for kidney disease treatment.

Additive-free Absorbable Keratin Sponge With Procoagulant Activity for Noncompressible Hemostasis.

Biomacromolecules

July 2024

School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, School of Biomedical Engineering, Wenzhou Medical University, 270 Xueyuan West Road, Wenzhou, Zhejiang 325027, China.

The development of a natural, additive-free, absorbable sponge with procoagulant activity for noncompressible hemostasis remains a challenging task. In this study, we extracted high molecular weight keratin (HK) from human hair and transformed it into a hemostatic sponge with a well-interconnected pore structure using a foaming technique, freeze-drying, and oxidation cross-linking. By controlling the cross-linking degree, the resulting sponge demonstrated excellent liquid absorption ability, shape recovery characteristics, and robust mechanical properties.

Over the past two decades, liquid biopsy has been increasingly used as a supplement, or even, a replacement to the traditional biopsy in clinical oncological practice, due to its noninvasive and early detectable properties. The detections can be based on a variety of features extracted from tumor‑derived entities, such as quantitative alterations, genetic changes, and epigenetic aberrations, and so on. So far, the clinical applications of cancer liquid biopsy mainly aimed at two aspects, prediction (early diagnosis, prognosis and recurrent evaluation, therapeutic response monitoring, etc.

Rapid Alternate Flicker Modulates Binocular Interaction in Adults With Abnormal Binocular Vision.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

February 2023

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Visual Science and National Engineering Research Center of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Eye Hospital Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, China.

Purpose: The current understanding of binocular processing is primarily derived from static spatial visual perception: this leaves the role of temporal information unclear. In this study, we addressed this gap by testing the effect of alternating flicker on binocular information processing in adults with abnormal binocular vision. Our goal was to determine which temporal frequency optimally balanced input from both eyes.

Biocompatible tumor-targeted GQDs nanocatalyst for chemodynamic tumor therapy.

J Mater Chem B

May 2022

State key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Optometry and Visual Science, School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, School of Biomedical Engineering, Eye Hospital Wenzhou Medical University 270 Xueyuanxi Road, Wenzhou 325027, China.

To deal with the complex tumor microenvironment (TME), chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has been developed, which uses nanocatalysts simulating peroxidase to convert high concentration hydrogen peroxide (HO) into highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and effectively kills tumor cells. Due to the low catalytic activity of traditional nanocatalysts, the present CDT treatment has to be combined with other anti-tumor therapies, which increases the complexity and uncertainty of the treatment. Thus, developing new nanocatalysts with stable and high enzymatic activity is the key point to CDT treatment.

Ocular inflammations are common diseases that may lead to serious vision-threatening obstacles. Eye drops for antiinflammation therapy need to be administered multiple times daily at a high dosage due to the rapid precorneal removal and low bioavailability of drugs. To overcome these problems, a cRGD-functionalized DSPE-PEG nanomicelle (DSPE-PEG-cRGD) encapsulated with flurbiprofen is proposed.

Deficient Binocular Combination of Second-Order Stimuli in Amblyopia.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

April 2016

McGill Vision Research, Department of Ophthalmology, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Purpose: Sensory imbalances in humans with amblyopia have been well documented using luminance-modulated (first-order) stimuli. However, little is known regarding whether there is a deficient binocular combination in amblyopes for stimuli defined by modulations in contrast (second-order stimuli). To address this, we asked two questions: Does a sensory imbalance also exist in the binocular combination of second-order stimuli, and if so, is it more severe than that expected on the basis of the imbalance for first-order stimuli?

Methods: The sensory imbalances of 14 adult amblyopes (mean age: 30.
