Background: To evaluate the biosafety, reduction in anterior capsule opacification, and fluctuation in intraocular pressure (IOP) of a new phakic refractive lens (PRL) with a sinusoidal drainage groove design.
Methods: This self-controlled experiment was performed on eight eyes of four rabbits. Each rabbit was implanted with a sinusoidal PRL (PRL-S5) in the right eye and a conventional posterior chamber PRL (PC-PRL) in the left eye.

Objective: Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is associated with changes in specific proteins in the eye's fluid, particularly matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), an enzyme that breaks down tissue structures, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), which regulates MMP activity. This study aims to investigate how these proteins correlate with the progression of ARN.
Methods: We analyzed aqueous humor samples from 33 patients with ARN and 23 control patients with virus-negative uveitis.

Purpose: The objective of this consensus is to provide otolaryngologists with appropriate strategies in the management of external auditory canal (EAC) carcinoma.
Methods: In the absence of randomized controlled trials, the consensus is based on expert opinions utilizing the Rand/UCLA appropriateness method [Fitch and Aguilar in The RAND/UCLA appropriateness method user's manual, RAND Corporation, Santa Monica, CA, 2001], drawing from existing literature and clinical experience.
Results: The management recommendations are structured around 12 key areas, including: definition and pathology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, work-up, tumor staging system, surgical management of primary tumor, surgical management of the parotid gland and the temporomandibular joint, lymph node metastasis, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, reconstruction, and follow-up.

Introduction: Tinnitus is a common ailment that affects 10%-15% of adults worldwide. Comorbidities associated with tinnitus often include hearing loss, emotional distress and sleep disorders, with insomnia being a common issue among patients with tinnitus. Audiological and psychological approaches are typically used to treat chronic subjective tinnitus, with the combination of sound therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy-based counselling having the strongest evidence for effectiveness.

Background: Mitochondria have always been considered too be closely related to the occurrence and development of malignant tumors. However, the bioinformatic analysis of mitochondria in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) has not been reported yet.
Methods: In the present study, we constructed a novel and reliable algorithm, comprising a consensus cluster analysis and risk assessment model, to predict the survival outcomes and tumor immunity for patients with terminal LUAD.

During tumorigenesis and progression, the immune checkpoint programmed death-1 (PD-1) and its ligand programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) play critical roles in suppressing T cell-mediated anticancer immune responses, leading to T-cell exhaustion and subsequent tumor evasion. Therefore, anti-PD-L1/PD-1 therapy has been an attractive strategy for treating cancer over the past decade. However, the overall efficacy of this approach remains suboptimal, revealing an urgent need for novel insights.

Methods: This prospective study included 124 eyes of 64 patients: 49 eyes were treated using a nontoric implantable collamer lens (ICL), and 75 eyes were treated using a toric implantable collamer lenses (TICL). Refractive parameters and ocular aberrations were examined before and 1 month after surgery.

Tumor microenvironment (TME) is closely associated with the progression and prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). To investigate potential biomarkers for predicting therapeutic outcomes in HNSCC, we analyzed the immune and stromal status of HNSCC based on the genes associated with TME using the ESTIMATE algorithm. Immune and stromal genes were identified with differential gene expression and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA).

Purpose: To compare the visual outcomes and risks of suboptimal vault-related complications between immediate sequential bilateral ICL surgery (ISBICLS) and delayed sequential bilateral ICL surgery (DSBICLS).
Design: A retrospective cohort study.
Methods: Patients who underwent bilateral ICL implantation between November 2014 and December 2021 at the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University (Shanghai, China) were included and divided into two groups: (1) ISBICLS: both eye surgeries performed on the same day, and (2) DSBICLS: second eye surgery performed < 7 days following the first one.

Background: Retinal detachment (RD) is a vision-threatening disorder of significant severity. Individuals with high myopia (HM) face a 2 to 6 times higher risk of developing RD compared to non-myopes. The timely identification of high myopia-related retinal detachment (HMRD) is crucial for effective treatment and prevention of additional vision impairment.

Purpose: To compare safety and efficacy of isolated and combined UV-light corneal crosslinking (CXL) and fine-needle diathermy (FND) to regress pathological corneal vessels in vivo.
Methods: Mice with inflamed and pathologically vascularized corneas received CXL or FND as monotherapy or a combination of both treatments. Corneal pathological blood and lymphatic vessels, immune cells and the morphology of anterior segment structures were evaluated.

Ethosuximide is the first drug reported to protect against age-related hearing loss, but its benefits are hampered by the pronounced side effects generated through systemic administration. We prepared a thermosensitive hydrogel containing ethosuximide-encapsulated multivesicular liposomes (ethosuximide-loaded MVLs-Gel) and evaluated its functional and histological effects on age-related hearing loss in C57BL/6J mice. The MVLs-Gel showed slow sustained-release characteristics up to over 120 h.

Purpose: To investigate the current prevalence and causes of moderate and severe visual impairment (MSVI) and blindness in elderly people in suburban Shanghai, China.
Methods: A cross-sectional study based on the population was conducted, which involved 5846 individuals (11,692 eyes) aged 65 years or older. Thorough eye examinations were performed to assess the prevalence and leading factors of MSVI (BCVA <20/63 to ≥20/400) and blindness (BCVA <20/400).

Purpose: Despite mounting evidence indicating that aquaporin-4 antibody-positive optic neuritis (AQP4-ON) presents a less favorable prognosis than other types of optic neuritis, there exists substantial heterogeneity in the prognostic outcomes within the AQP4-ON cohort. Considering the persistent debate over the role of MRI in assessing the prognosis of optic neuritis, we aim to investigate the correlation between the MRI appearance and long-term visual prognosis in AQP4-ON patients.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the ophthalmological and imaging data of AQP4-ON patients admitted to our Neuro-ophthalmology Department from January 2015 to March 2018, with consecutive follow-up visits for a minimum of 3 years.

Purpose: Pterygium is a vision-threatening conjunctival fibrovascular degenerated disease with a high global prevalence up to 12 %, while no absolute pharmacotherapy has been applied in clinics. In virtue of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technique, our study investigated underlying pathogeneses and potential therapeutic targets of pterygium from the cellular transcriptional level.
Methods: A total of 45605 cells from pterygium of patients and conjunctiva of normal controls (NC) were conducted with scRNA-seq, and then analyzed via integrated analysis, pathway enrichment, pseudotime trajectory, and cell-cell communications.
