Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Bucheon St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Korea. Electronic address:

Objective: To evaluate the impact of additional vidian neurectomy or posterior nasal neurectomy in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and allergic rhinitis (AR), compared to the outcomes of conventional endoscopic sinus surgery alone.

Methods: Up to May 2024, six databases were systematically searched. We evaluated studies that compared the clinical improvement of chronic sinusitis-related symptoms and endoscopic findings between the neurectomy group (endoscopic sinus surgery plus vidian neurectomy or posterior nasal neurectomy) and the control group (endoscopic sinus surgery only).

Introduction: Implantable collamer lens (ICL) is a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens. It is usually indicated for high refractive error correction that cannot be treated by laser vision correction due to physical limitations.

Case Presentation: 39 years old male with a past ocular history of keratoconus underwent astigmatic keratotomy followed by crosslinking in both eyes a couple of years later due to signs of corneal ectasia progression.

Evaluation of color in digital nuclear power plant control room displays.

January 2025

Idaho National Laboratory, 1955 Fremont Avenue, Idaho Falls, ID, 83415, United States.

Human system interface design in industrial process control is guided by industry standards, human factors best practices, and domain-specific conventions, and often there is a conflict between one or more of the sources of design input for specific design elements. In the nuclear domain, one design element for which conflict arises is the use of color to represent equipment state. This study evaluates the tradeoffs associated with using color in a process control display versus using white and shades of gray.

Background And Aim: The progressive nature of type 2 diabetes often, in time, necessitates basal insulin therapy to achieve glycemic targets. However, despite standardized titration algorithms, many people remain poorly controlled after initiating insulin therapy, leading to suboptimal glycemic control and complications. Both healthcare professionals and people with type 2 diabetes have expressed the need for novel tools to aid in this process.

Background: With the aging of the population, the deterioration of visual and auditory functions amongst the elderly has attracted much attention. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are common eye and ear diseases that seriously affect the quality of life of elderly population.

Methods: This study utilised a whole cohort sampling method, with a total of 713 participants aged 50 years and older in the community from June 2022 to October 2023, resulting in the inclusion of 620 participants.

Craniofacial syndromes present with exorbitism and airway obstruction as a result of upper and middle facial hypoplasia. Classical subcranial Lefort III (LF III) or monobloc distraction osteogenesis (DO) using an external craniofacial device is used to treat these deformities. These procedures are done during mixed dentition, in most cases, advancing an abnormal face, to a more normal position.

Artificial Doctors: Performance of Chatbots as a Tool for Patient Education on Keratoconus.

Eye Contact Lens

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology (Z.O.O.), Gaziantep State Hospital, Gaziantep, Turkey; Department of Ophthalmology (L.D.), Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, Niğde, Turkey; and Department of Ophthalmology (I.E.Y.), Gaziantep Dr. Ersin Arslan Training and Research Hospital, Gaziantep, Turkey.

Purpose: We aimed to compare the answers given by ChatGPT, Bard, and Copilot and that obtained from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) website to patient-written questions related to keratoconus in terms of accuracy, understandability, actionability, and readability to find out whether chatbots can be used in patient education.

Methods: Twenty patient-written questions obtained from the AAO website related to keratoconus were asked to ChatGPT, Bard, and Copilot. Two ophthalmologists independently assessed the answers obtained from chatbots and the AAO website in terms of accuracy, understandability, and actionability according to the Structure of Observed Learning Outcome taxonomy, Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool-Understandability, and Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool-Actionability tests, respectively.

Objectives: This study compares the cosmetic and functional outcomes of corneal tattooing/keratopigmentation and ocular prostheses in rehabilitating disfigured eyes, focusing on esthetic appearance and emotional well-being.

Methods: Ninety-two patients were included: 48 received corneal tattooing, and 44 were fitted with ocular prostheses. Anophthalmic surgery was indicated for trauma, painful blind eye, endophthalmitis, tumor, and corneal ulcer, while corneal tattooing was performed for trauma, corneal ulcer, and endophthalmitis.

The design of the prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE) device allows it to serve as a novel drug delivery system. In this article, we describe the off-label administration of amphotericin B and cenegermin by instillation in the PROSE device reservoir for the treatment of Candida keratitis in the setting of a persistent epithelial defect.

We perceive and understand others' emotional states from multisensory information such as facial expressions and vocal cues. However, such cues are not always available or clear. Can partial loss of visual cues affect multisensory emotion perception? In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the widespread use of face masks, which can reduce some facial cues used in emotion perception.

Treatment of Hyperthyroidism in Graves' Disease Complicated by Thyroid Eye Disease.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, MI 48105  USA.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is the most consequential extrathyroidal manifestation or complication of Graves' disease (GD). Treatment of hyperthyroidism in GD complicated by TED is challenging. Antithyroid drugs (ATDs) and thyroidectomy do not change the natural course of TED, while radioactive iodine (RAI) is associated with a small but well-documented risk of TED de novo occurrence or its progression/worsening.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, United States of America.

Complex systems, such as in brains, markets, and societies, exhibit internal dynamics influenced by external factors. Disentangling delayed external effects from internal dynamics within these systems is often difficult. We propose using a Vector Autoregressive model with eXogenous input (VARX) to capture delayed interactions between internal and external variables.

Electric field stimulation directs target-specific axon regeneration and partial restoration of vision after optic nerve crush injury.

PLoS One

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Keck School of Medicine, USC Roski Eye Institute, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, United States of America.

Failure of central nervous system (CNS) axons to regenerate after injury results in permanent disability. Several molecular neuro-protective and neuro-regenerative strategies have been proposed as potential treatments but do not provide the directional cues needed to direct target-specific axon regeneration. Here, we demonstrate that applying an external guidance cue in the form of electric field stimulation to adult rats after optic nerve crush injury was effective at directing long-distance, target-specific retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axon regeneration to native targets in the diencephalon.

The disencapsulated mind: A premotor theory of human imagination.

Psychol Rev

January 2025

Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Dartmouth College.

Our premodern ancestors had perceptual, motoric, and cognitive functional domains that were modularly encapsulated. Some of these came to interact through a new type of cross-modular binding in our species. This allowed previously domain-dedicated, encapsulated motoric and sensory operators to operate on operands for which they had not evolved.
