It is known that glow discharges with a water anode inject and form solvated electrons at the plasma-liquid interface, driving a wide variety of reduction reactions. However, in systems with a water cathode, the production and role of solvated electrons are less clear. Here, we present evidence for the direct detection of solvated electrons produced at the interface of an argon plasma and a water cathode via absorption spectroscopy.

Defining the value of medical microbiology consultation.

J Clin Microbiol

October 2024

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Unlabelled: Medical microbiologists, defined as doctoral-level laboratory directors with subspecialty training in medical microbiology, lead the clinical laboratory operations through activities such as clinical consultations, oversight of diagnostic testing menu, institutional leadership, education, and scholastic activities. However, unlike their clinical colleagues, medical microbiologists are largely unable to bill for clinical consultations performed within the hospital and, therefore, unable to generate relative value units or a similar quantifiable metric. As hospital budgets tighten and justification of staffing becomes a necessity, this may present a challenge to the medical microbiologist attempting to prove their value to the organization.

Transcription factors (TFs) regulate the process of transcription through the modulation of different kinetic steps. Although models can often describe the observed transcriptional output of a measured gene, predicting a TFs role on a given promoter requires an understanding of how the TF alters each step of the transcription process. In this work, we use a simple model of transcription to assess the role of promoter identity, and the degree to which TFs alter binding of RNAP (stabilization) and initiation of transcription (acceleration) on three primary characteristics: the range of steady-state regulation, cell-to-cell variability in expression, and the dynamic response time of a regulated gene.

Introduction: Although retrieval practice is a well-established method of improving learning, it is unclear whether review question format matters or how many review questions are needed to maximize the effects of retrieval practice.

Review Of Literature: Inconsistent findings are reported regarding review question format, and no studies were conducted in physical therapy education programs. A positive relationship is reported between review question number and exam performance, but no studies estimate the number of review questions needed to maximize retention of specific learning objectives.

Background: Thoracic rotation mobility is crucial for athletes in rotational sports such as baseball, golf, and swimming to maintain the proper biomechanics associated with the sport. Accurate differentiation between normal mobility and active and passive physiological deficits in the thoracic region is critical for identifying the need for intervention to the thorax.

Purpose: To establish the reliability and discriminant validity of visual estimation of thorax rotation range of motion across clinicians of differing experience levels in determining normal mobility and active or passive physiological deficits when utilizing the quadruped lumbar-locked position.

Echocardiographic and electrocardiographic findings in Irish Wolfhounds eating high-pulse or low-pulse diets.

J Vet Intern Med

May 2024

Department of Clinical Sciences, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University, North Grafton, Massachusetts, USA.

Background: Apparently healthy dogs of various breeds eating nontraditional, high-pulse diets can have larger left ventricular diameter, lower systolic function, and more ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) compared with dogs eating traditional, low-pulse diets. It is unknown whether Irish Wolfhounds eating high-pulse diets have similar cardiac abnormalities.

Hypothesis/objectives: To compare electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings between Irish Wolfhounds eating high- or low-pulse diets.

Introduction: National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) performance is predicted to some degree by cognitive measures, such as grade point average (GPA) and the Graduate Record Exam scores. Researchers have begun to explore noncognitive measures, for example, grit and mindset, which could account for other potential determinants of student success in physical therapist (PT) education programs and the NPTE.

Review Of Literature: There is a paucity of evidence that has explored non-cognitive factors related to academic performance compared to cognitive factors.

Article Synopsis
  • The review assesses the effectiveness of radiofrequency neurotomy for treating sacroiliac joint pain, which affects approximately 25% of low back pain cases and lacks a standardized diagnostic method.
  • Despite various treatment options like exercise and injections, their effectiveness is inconsistent, and recent changes in Medicare’s coverage reflect ongoing uncertainty in intervention efficacy.
  • The findings suggest that while radiofrequency neurotomy could be a viable treatment based on fair evidence, significant limitations and variations in study quality highlight the necessity for more robust research.

Lipids in the American Alligator stratum corneum provide insights into the evolution of vertebrate skin.

Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol

June 2024

Biology Department, University of Southern Indiana, Evansville, IN 47712, USA. Electronic address:

In terrestrial vertebrates, the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), provides a durable and flexible interface with the environment and is comprised of corneocytes embedded in lipids. However, the morphology and lipid composition of the SC varies throughout evolutionary history. Because crocodilians and birds phylogenetically bracket the Archosaurian clade, lipid composition in crocodilian SC may be compared with that of birds and other vertebrates to make inferences about broader phylogenetic patterns within Archosaurs while highlighting adaptations in vertebrate skin.
