Anterior Transpetrosal Approach and Microsurgical Resection of a Petrous Tentorial Meningioma: 3-Dimensional Operative Video.

Tentorial meningiomas are challenging tumors because of its complex relationship with vital neurovascular structures. We present the case of a 41-yr-old female with a history of right-sided facial numbness associated with pain around the ear. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a lesion in the right tentorium edge closely related with the porus trigeminus, suggestive of a meningioma.

Metabolic syndrome and psoriatic arthritis among patients with psoriasis vulgaris: Quality of life and prevalence.

Interest has increased in comorbidities associated with psoriasis and their effects on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and to investigate HRQoL and the prevalence of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity and dyslipidemia. In a cross-sectional design, patients diagnosed with plaque psoriasis answered an interview and standardized questionnaires (Dermatology Life Quality Index questionnaire [DLQI], 36-Item Short Form Health Survey [SF-36] and EuroQol Five-Dimension Questionnaire Three-Level version [EQ-5D-3L]).

Smooth Muscle Alpha Actin Immunoexpression (α-Sma) and CD-117 Antibody (C-Kit) in Capsules Formed by Polyurethane Foam-Coated Silicone Implants and with Textured Surface: A Study on Rats.

Background: One of the undesirable complications that might occur after breast augmentation with silicone implants is capsular contracture. In its etiology, the relations between mast cells and myofibroblasts play an important role in collagen synthesis. Mast cells are able to activate fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, through paracrine secretions, inducing collagen production.

Use of an algorithm in choosing abdominoplasty techniques.

Objective: to validate an algorithm for the choice of the abdominoplasty surgical technique among the five approaches established in the literature, according to the characteristics of the abdominal wall.

Methods: we conducted a retrospective study of 245 patients undergoing abdominoplasty, for whom the method of choice of the surgical technique was the proposed algorithm, based on the degree of abdominal flaccidity determined by bimanual maneuver. We studied its applications and conveniences, as well as the complications inherent in each group studied.

Nutritional profile of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases in the age of biologicals.

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) has an important role in the body composition of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Crohn's disease (CD), and spondyloarthritis (SpA). We aimed to assess the nutritional profile of patients with RA, CD, and SpA undergoing remission with multiple therapies comparing to controls and to analyze the effect of anti-TNFα medications in the nutritional parameters of these patients. One hundred thirty-one patients were included: 44 with RA, 43 with CD, and 44 with SpA.

Simultaneous cochlear implantation as a therapeutic option in vestibular schwannoma surgery: case report.

Hearing loss is the most common symptom of vestibular schwannomas (VSs). The management of these lesions includes observation, radiosurgery, and microsurgical resection. Hearing preservation and rehabilitation are the major challenges after the tumor treatment.

The lupus patient with positive rheumatoid factor.

Background Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may form clusters with clinical manifestations and autoantibodies. Objective The objective of this report is to study whether SLE patients with positive rheumatoid factor (RF) have a special clinical and/or serological profile. Methods A retrospective study of 467 SLE patients seen at a single rheumatology unit was conducted.

Mannose-binding lectin serum levels in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus: association with thrombocytopaenia and seizure.

The complement system contributes to the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a key molecule of the lectin pathway of complement and seems to be related to the clinical manifestations of this disease. We evaluated the serum levels of MBL and its relationship with disease onset and clinical findings in SLE patients.

Profile of renal trauma victims treated at a university hospital in Curitiba.

Objective:: to study the profile of victims of kidney trauma who underwent surgical and medical treatment in a hospital in Curitiba.

Methods:: we conducted a retrospective, analytical, quantitative, cross-sectional study of patients with renal trauma admitted to the Evangelical Hospital of Curitiba between February 2011 and January 2014.

Results:: participated in the study 38 patients, four women and 34, men with a mean age of 28.

Ultrasound evaluation on carpal tunnel syndrome before and after bariatric surgery.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome in candidates for bariatric surgery comparing with the non-obese population and verify the effects on it of bariatric treatment.

Methods: We studied three groups of individuals: 1) patients waiting for bariatric surgery (preoperative); 2) individuals who had already undergone the procedure (postoperative); and 3) control group. We collected demographic and clinical data of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Ultrasound guidance during embryo transfer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Objectives: To summarize the current evidence on the effect of using ultrasound (US) guidance during embryo transfer (ET).

Methods: In this systematic review, we included randomized controlled trials examining the effect of the use of US guidance during ET; data from studies using the same catheter type in study arms were not pooled with the results from studies that used different catheter types.

Results: Twenty-one studies were included in the quantitative analysis: 18 compared 'US guidance' with 'clinical touch', of which one was subsequently excluded from the quantitative meta-analysis owing to a lack of available data, three studies compared transvaginal US guidance with transabdominal US guidance, and one study compared 'hysterosonometry before ET' with US guidance.

Periungual capillaroscopy in psoriasis.

Background: Nailfold capillaroscopy is a useful technique for evaluating changes in microcirculation.

Objective: To investigate changes at nailfold capillaroscopy in psoriatic patients compared with controls.

Methods: Nailfold capillaroscopy was performed in 46 psoriatic patients and 50 controls to assess microscopic morphological changes, capillary density and the presence of areas with devascularization.

Postoperative abdominal CT findings in patients submitted to Roux-en-y gastric bypass without ring.

Objective: To evaluate by CT scan in patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass without a ring for treatment of morbid obesity that looked for medical assistance after the operation.

Methods: We studied 40 CT exams from patients attended at the radiology service with the intention to clarify abdominal complains. The patients were in post-bariatric surgical follow-up and were operated in the same hospital.

Changes in clinical and laboratory parameters in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus submitted to Roux-en-y gastrojejunal bypass without ring.

Objectives: 1) To assess the changes in body weight and body mass index in grade 2 and 3 obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, pre and postoperatively; 2) to assess the changes in pre and postoperative fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, glycated hemoglobin and insulin.

Methods: A prospective study was undertaken with 40 selected patients with grade 2 and 3 obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, all with indication for surgical treatment of obesity. All patients underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass without ring.

Evaluation of the capillaroscopy using endothelin-1 as a marker of endothelial activation in microvascular injury and cutaneous ulcerations.

Objectives: To evaluate the presence of ET-1 in patients with scleroderma and its correlation with the level of disease activity; to verify if the levels of endothelin are associated with the clinical profile and autoantibodies of scleroderma, and even if there is an association with microvascular injury detected by nailfold capillaroscopy.

Methods: A total of 74 patients, 37 patients with scleroderma, the remaining being controls, were subjected to measurement of ET-1 by ELISA. Patients with scleroderma were evaluated through a questionnaire about characteristics of the disease and determination of autoantibodies.

Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in scleroderma patients.

Anti-CCP (cyclic citrullinated peptide) is considered the most useful laboratory tool in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Some authors have also found this autoantibody in patients with scleroderma (SSc). The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anti-CCP antibodies in SSc patients from Southern Brazil and their association with clinical and serological profile of the disease.

Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies in adult patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Background: Antibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) have been found in different proportions in the juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) population. The majority of studies have been done in children or mixed population (children plus adults).

Aim: The objective of the study was to study the prevalence of anti-CCP in JIA adult patients.

Antinucleosome in systemic lupus erythematosus. A study in a Brazilian population.

Antinucleosome antibodies have been found with variable prevalence in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and were associated with more severe disease. This research aims to study the prevalence of antinucleosome antibodies in a sample of Brazilian adult SLE patients and their association with clinical findings and disease activity. Ninety-two adult patients (81 females and 11 males, with mean age of 37.

Leg ulcers and anticardiolipin antibodies.

Prothrombotic phenomena are described in leg ulcers of different etiologies. This work attempts to verify the prevalence of anticardiolipin antibodies in such patients. For this purpose, 151 patients with leg ulcers and 150 control patients were studied and it was obtained clinical data and anticardiolipin antibodies titers.

Porphyria cutanea tarda and systemic lupus erythematosus.

The co-existence of systemic lupus erythematosus and porphyria although rare has been known for a long time. This association forces the physician to make a careful differential diagnosis of the bullous lesions that might appear in such patients and to be careful when prescribing certain drugs such as chloroquine. This drug, when used in the regular doses for treating lupus, may cause hepatotoxicity in patients.

Acquired unilateral nevoid telangiectasia in a healthy men.

Unilateral nevoid telangiectasia is a rare vascular dermatosis, characterized by areas of superficial telangiectases distributed in a linear unilateral pattern. It was described in 1899 by Zeisler and Blascko. Several theories where developed in order to explain its etiopathogenesis.
