Background: Obesity has been linked to the development and progression of autoimmune diseases.
Aim: To investigate the presence of autoantibodies in the sera of bariatric-surgery patients.
Methods: During the pre- and postoperative period, sera from 79 patients undergoing bariatric surgery were tested for the presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), Rheumatoid Factor (RF), IgG and IgM anticardiolipin antibodies, and anti-endomysial antibodies.

Objectives: Transgender individuals submitted to hormone or surgical treatment may have alterations in their bone metabolism as these elements are important players in bone remodeling. We aimed to study bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition in transwomen undergoing cross-sex hormonal treatment (CSHT) from Brazil for over 3 years, comparing them with female and male controls.
Methods: 93 individuals (31 transwomen, 31 females and 31 males paired for age and body mass index) were studied for bone mass, and body composition by densitometry (by DXA).

Pentraxine-3 (PTX3) is a member of the humoral innate immune system and serves a role in protection against infections, inflammation control and matrix deposition. The aim of the present study was to measure the PTX3 levels in obese patients and its association with glycemic and lipid profiles, and to analyze the effects of weight loss provided by bariatric surgery in serum PTX3 levels. PTX3 was measured in 84 obese patients whom underwent bariatric surgery and 94 healthy controls.

To study if cumulative glucocorticoid use could be related to cognitive impairment in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. A sample of 60 RA patients and 64 controls were studied for the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and depression scale (using CES-D or Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale). RA patients also filled a visual analogic scale (VAS) of pain and had disease activity evaluated by DAS-28 ESR (disease activity score using erythrocyte sedimentation rate).

Introduction: Fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms worsen in a significant portion of patients with the onset of menopause. Some patients report that their symptoms begin after menopause, suggesting a relationship between these entities. Sleep disturbance is a common condition in FM and menopause, and it is associated with chronic pain.

Background: Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) have been found in several types of cancer although the meaning of its presence is not completely known.
Aim: To study the prevalence of ANA in patients with cervical intraepithelial lesion and invasive cervical cancer.
Methods: A total of 205 women who underwent screening for cervical cancer or treatment at the Erasto Gaertner Cancer Hospital in Curitiba - Brazil, were enrolled in the study.
