Background: Plitidepsin has shown potent preclinical activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and was generally well tolerated in a phase I trial of hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). NEPTUNO, a phase III, multicenter, randomized, controlled trial, was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of plitidepsin in the management of moderate COVID-19 in hospitalized adult patients.
Methods: Included patients had documented severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, required oxygen therapy, and had adequate organ function.

The aim of this review was to examine the literature regarding younger individuals without classical risk factors for atherosclerosis who develop coronary artery disease (CAD) prematurely at an early age. An extensive literature review was undertaken in Pubmed, Scopus, and Google Scholar regarding early-onset or premature atherosclerosis, CAD, its diagnosis, management, and prophylaxis. There are individuals of both genders, particularly in the younger age group of 20-40 years of age, who lack the traditional/ classical risk factors and still develop CAD and other manifestations of atherosclerosis.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity/mortality world-wide, hence preventive interventions are crucial. Observational data showing beneficial CV effects of vitamin supplements, promoted by self-proclaimed experts, have led to ~50% of Americans using multivitamins; this practice has culminated into a multi-billion-dollar business. However, robust evidence is lacking, and certain vitamins might incur harm.

Primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the bone (PLB) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) that affects the skeletal system with or without regional lymph node involvement. We present the case of a 74-year-old female patient with pain due to multifocal osteolytic lesions. The diagnosis of diffuse large B-cells (non-GCB) phenotype was made by clinical, laboratory, histopathological examination accompanied by an extensive immunohistochemical profile of one of the skeletal lesions.

Introduction: In Greece, the spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in humans has led to the reintroduction of colistin as a therapeutic agent. Unfortunately, colistin resistance with different mechanisms has emerged. The present work aims to determine the prevalence of carbapenem and colistin resistance and the corresponding mechanisms in Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates from Greece.

Non-response cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) remains an issue, despite the refinement of selection criteria. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of stress echocardiography along with dyssynchrony parameters for identification of CRT responders or late responders. 106 symptomatic heart failure patients were examined before, 6 months and 2-4 years after CRT implementation.

Stress echocardiography (SE) is a very useful method in clinical practice, because it offers important information of both the patient's functional status and hemodynamic changes during stress. Therefore, SE provides strong diagnostic and prognostic data in a wide spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. This review summarizes the clinical applications of SE in conditions beyond coronary artery disease (CAD) and highlights practical recommendations and key issues for each condition that need further investigation.

Objective: Percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD) is routinely performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation and use of transesophageal (TEE) or intracardiac echocardiography, incurring longer duration and higher cost. We have used a simplified, economical, fluoroscopy-only guided approach with local anesthesia, and herein report our data.
Methods: The study includes 112 procedures in 110 patients with PFO (n=75) or ASD (n=35), with use of an Amplatzer occluder, heparin and prophylactic antibiotics.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an established therapeutic option for the subset of patients with heart failure (HF), reduced ejection fraction (EF), and dyssynchrony evidenced by electrocardiography. Benefit from CRT has been proven in many clinical trials, yet a sizeable proportion of these patients with wide QRS do not respond to this intervention, despite the updated practice guidelines. Several echocardiographic indices, targeting mechanical rather than electrical dyssynchrony, have been suggested to address this issue, but research so far has not succeeded in providing a single and simple measurement with adequate sensitivity and specificity for identification of responders.

Unlabelled: Parathyroid carcinoma is an extremely rare endocrine malignancy that accounts for less than 1% of cases of primary hyperparathyroidism. We report a 44-year-old woman who presented with fatigue and diffuse bone pain. Laboratory findings revealed highly elevated serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and a 4.

Introduction: Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (EF) (HFpEF) accounts for approximately 50% of HF cases and its prevalence relative to HF with reduced EF is rising. Hypertension (HT) is the most common co-morbidity in HFpEF patients and it is implicated in both the pathogenesis and the prognosis of the disease. Therefore, HT is a modifiable risk factor of high yield in HFpEF.

Objective: Vascular closure devices (VCDs), such as the Angio-Seal, a three-component hemostatic plug, have greatly facilitated the routine clinical practice in the catheterization laboratory. The manufacturer recommends a local angiogram before Angio-Seal deployment. However, from the outset, we employed a simplified routine of deploying this VCD, i.

Background: Many patients who suffer from bradycardia and need cardiac pacing also have atrial fibrillation (AF). New pacemaker algorithms, such as atrial preventive pacing and atrial antitachycardia pacing (DDDRP) and managed ventricular pacing (MVP), have been specifically designed to reduce AF occurrence and duration and to minimize the detrimental effects of right ventricular pacing. The randomized MINimizE Right Ventricular pacing to prevent Atrial fibrillation and heart failure trial established that DDDRP + MVP pacing modality reduced permanent AF in bradycardia patients as compared with standard dual-chamber pacing (DDDR).

Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common comorbidity in bradycardia patients. Advanced pacemakers feature atrial preventive pacing and atrial antitachycardia pacing (DDDRP) and managed ventricular pacing (MVP), which minimizes unnecessary right ventricular pacing. We evaluated whether DDDRP and MVP might reduce mortality, morbidity, or progression to permanent AF when compared with standard dual-chamber pacing (Control DDDR).

Platelets play a key role in the pathogenesis of atherothrombosis, involved in both the development and progression of atherosclerotic heart disease, and the attendant acute thrombotic complications. Antiplatelet therapy constitutes a mainstay therapy for patients with acute coronary syndromes and generally high-risk patients with atherothrombosis. Until recently, dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) for the treatment and prevention of the complications of atherothrombotic disease was traditionally limited to aspirin plus clopidogrel.

Background: The aim of this study was to identify inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients' perspectives regarding everyday life issues.
Methods: From October 2010 till April 2011, 1,181 IBD patients completed an anonymous questionnaire through the internet (827 cases) or at the outpatient clinic of the participating centers (354 cases), aiming to identify: a) the impact of disease on social life, emotional status and work productivity; b) the source of disease information; and c) the level of support from family members and friends.
Results: Fifty-five percent of the patients reported that IBD interferes with their social life, while 65% felt stressed, 60% depressed and 19% tired because of it.
