This article explores the territorial differences in the onset and spread of COVID-19 and the excess mortality associated with the pandemic, with a focus on European regions and US counties. Both in Europe and in the US, the pandemic arrived earlier and recorded higher Rt values in urban regions than in intermediate and rural ones. A similar gap is also found in the data on excess mortality.

When a new environmental policy or a specific intervention is taken in order to improve air quality, it is paramount to assess and quantify-in space and time-the effectiveness of the adopted strategy. The lockdown measures taken worldwide in 2020 to reduce the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be envisioned as a policy intervention with an indirect effect on air quality. In this paper we propose a statistical spatiotemporal model as a tool for intervention analysis, able to take into account the effect of weather and other confounding factor, as well as the spatial and temporal correlation existing in the data.

Objective: The European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC) has developed new recommendations on breast cancer screening and diagnosis. The objective of this work was to adapt these recommendations to Spanish in order to implement and guarantee the quality and success of breast cancer screening programmes (PCCM) throughout the Spanish territory.

Methods: The new European Guidelines on Screening and Diagnosis of Breast Cancer have been prepared by a multidisciplinary panel of experts and patients (Guidelines Development Group, GDG).

The current/traditional human health risk assessment paradigm is challenged by recent scientific and technical advances, and ethical demands. The current approach is considered too resource intensive, is not always reliable, can raise issues of reproducibility, is mostly animal based and does not necessarily provide an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of toxicity. From an ethical and scientific viewpoint, a paradigm shift is required to deliver testing strategies that enable reliable, animal-free hazard and risk assessments, which are based on a mechanistic understanding of chemical toxicity and make use of exposure science and epidemiological data.

The triple oxygen isotope signature ΔO in atmospheric CO, also known as its "O excess," has been proposed as a tracer for gross primary production (the gross uptake of CO by vegetation through photosynthesis). We present the first global 3-D model simulations for ΔO in atmospheric CO together with a detailed model description and sensitivity analyses. In our 3-D model framework we include the stratospheric source of ΔO in CO and the surface sinks from vegetation, soils, ocean, biomass burning, and fossil fuel combustion.

There is an increasing evidence that smallholder farms contribute substantially to food production globally, yet spatially explicit data on agricultural field sizes are currently lacking. Automated field size delineation using remote sensing or the estimation of average farm size at subnational level using census data are two approaches that have been used.
