Exposure to and Transplacental Transfer of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in a Twin Pregnancy Cohort in Korea.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

Department of Health, Environment & Safety, Eulji University, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do 13135, South Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on twin pregnancies resulted from assisted reproductive technology, especially in older women, highlighting their higher risk of chemical exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which can affect fetuses.
  • - Researchers analyzed PFAS levels in 78 maternal and 156 cord serum samples, finding higher PFAS concentrations in mothers, while certain chemicals were more prevalent in newborns, suggesting uneven exposure during pregnancy.
  • - Results showed that while twin pregnancies don't change PFAS exposure levels or transfer efficiency compared to singletons, maternal PFAS levels were linked to complications and varied cord levels in twins, indicating a need for more research on potential health impacts.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the relationship between high school students' willingness to participate in a school rope jumping club, their satisfaction with participation, and their satisfaction with school life. To this end, data were collected from 411 male and female high school students participating in a school rope jumping club in Incheon, and the following results were derived through factor analysis, frequency analysis, -test, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis. First, male students showed higher scores than female students in all participation willingness factors.

N-Acetylcysteine Alleviates Depressive-Like Behaviors in Adolescent EAAC1 Mice and Early Life Stress Model Rats.

Int J Biol Sci

November 2024

Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, College of Medicine, Eulji University, Daejeon, 34824, Republic of Korea.

Exposure to adverse experiences during early life is associated with an increased risk of psychopathology during adolescence. In a previous study, we demonstrated that neonatal maternal separation (NMS) combined with social isolation led to impulsive and depressive-like behaviors in male adolescents. Additionally, it significantly reduced the expression of excitatory amino acid carrier 1 (EAAC1) in the hippocampus.

Intravitreal long-term sustained ranibizumab delivery using injectable microgel-embedded hydrogel.

Asian J Pharm Sci

October 2024

Department of Molecular Science and Technology, Ajou University, Suwon 16499, Republic of Korea.

Retinal vascular disease is the leading cause of visual impairment. Although intravitreal drug injections are the most suitable approach for addressing retinal disorders, existing clinical treatments necessitate repeated administration, imposing a substantial burden on patients with various intraocular complications. This study introduces an injectable and biodegradable hyaluronan microgel (Hm)-embedded gelatin-poly(ethylene glycol)-tyramine hydrogel (HmGh) designed for sustained intravitreal ranibizumab (RBZ) delivery to reduce patient burden and minimize the side effects associated with frequent injections.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to explore how regular physical activity (PA) before and after a dementia diagnosis affects the risk of death, with a focus on different levels of exercise intensity (light, moderate, vigorous).
  • - Researchers analyzed data from over 60,000 individuals diagnosed with dementia using health examination records and found that higher PA levels were significantly linked to lower mortality risk, with those maintaining regular activity having the lowest risk.
  • - The results indicated that starting any form of PA after a dementia diagnosis led to at least a 20% reduction in mortality risk, suggesting that encouraging physical activity could improve survival for those with dementia.

Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a pivotal analytical instrument, valued for its nondestructive capabilities and its capacity to provide essential material-specific insights. However, the excessive costs associated with commercially available Raman instruments present a barrier to their accessibility for many academic institutions and broader usage. Herein, we introduce an affordable and accessible approach to constructing a versatile Raman instrument capable of accommodating both spectroscopic and microscopic analyses.

Pancreatic cancer is known to be the most lethal cancer. Fewer new treatments are being developed for pancreatic cancer as compared to other cancers. The bioactive lipid S1P, which is mainly regulated by sphingosine kinase 1 (SK1) and sphingosine kinase 2 (SK2) enzymes, plays significant roles in pancreatic cancer initiation and exacerbation.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction is linked to obesity and diabetes, with environmental pollutants possibly increasing diabetes risk through dioxin-like substances that affect mitochondrial health and lung function.
  • A study of 1371 adults from the Korean Genome Epidemiologic Study found that dioxin-like mitochondria inhibitor substances (MIS) were associated with body mass index (BMI) and lung function, indicating a complex relationship between these factors.
  • Results suggested that higher levels of MIS negatively impacted mitochondrial function, which subsequently affected both BMI and lung health, emphasizing the need for better understanding of mitochondrial health in the context of metabolic disorders and aging.

Aims: Considering the limited data regarding clinical outcomes of patients with non-ST-segment on the ECG elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), this study compared the outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with newer-generation drug-eluting stents stratified by the presence/absence of complex lesions and symptom-to-balloon time (SBT; <48 h or ≥48 h).

Methods: We enrolled 4373 patients with NSTEMI from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institute of Health dataset and stratified them into the complex group (2106 patients; SBT < 48 h, n  = 1365; SBT ≥48 h, n  = 741) and the noncomplex group (2267 patients; SBT < 48 h, n  = 1573; SBT ≥48 h, n  = 694). The primary outcome was the 3-year all-cause mortality rate.

November 2024

Graduate School of Public Health, Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea; Institute of Health and Environment, Graduate School of Public Health, Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea. Electronic address:

Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) and acetyl triethyl citrate (ATEC) are widely used as plasticizers, but their metabolites as exposure biomarkers for biomonitoring, as well as approximate human metabolic pathways, are not well understood. This study addresses this knowledge gap by conducting suspect screening to propose specific metabolites in human urine as potential biomarkers of exposure and explore their kinetic profiles. Ten volunteers were administered deuterium labeled ATBC (ATBC-d) and seven received ATEC or deuterium labeled ATEC (ATEC-d), with urine samples collected over 48 h post-administration.
