Pancreatic cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the USA. The 5-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is as low as 10%, making it one of the most deadly cancers. This dismal prognosis is caused, in part, by the lack of early detection and screening options, leading to late-stage detection of the disease, at a point at which chemotherapy is no longer effective.

Objective: To evaluate the differences in presentation (formatting) of adverse drug reaction (ADR) information within drug monographs in commonly used drug information (DI) mobile device applications.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of ADR formatting of twenty commonly prescribed oral medications within seven DI mobile applications was performed. Databases were assessed for ADR information, including presence of placebo comparisons, severity of ADR, onset of ADR, formatting of ADRs in percentile (quantitative) format or qualitative format, whether references were used to cite information, and whether ADRs are grouped by organ system.

Buprenorphine/naloxone has been shown to be effective for treating opioid use disorder (OUD). However, the traditional method of induction requires a patient to be in moderate-to-severe withdrawal, which is challenging, time-consuming, and a common reason for leaving against medical advice. Induction strategies that minimize the severity and duration of patient discomfort while enabling patients to reach therapeutic doses during short hospital admissions can mitigate difficulties when inducing a patient on buprenorphine/naloxone.

Environment exposure to arsenic had been linked to increased incidents of human cancers. In cellular and animal experimental systems, arsenic has been shown to be highly capable of activating several signaling pathways that play critical roles in cell growth regulation, malignant transformation and the stemness of cancer stem-like cells. Emerging evidence indicates certain oncogenic properties of the Nrf2 transcription factor that can be activated by arsenic and many other environmental hazards.

Clinical treatment options for daptomycin (DAP)-resistant (DAP-R), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are relatively limited. Current therapeutic strategies often take advantage of potential synergistic activity of DAP plus β-lactams; however, the mechanisms underlying their combinatorial efficacy are likely complex and remain incompletely understood. Accumulating evidence indicates a carcinogenic role of environmental arsenic exposure, but mechanisms on how arsenic fosters malignant transformation of the normal cells are not fully established. A simulation laboratory was developed for prelicensure nursing and undergraduate clinical laboratory science students using scripted patient cases with laboratory test results. Repetitive, low-dose (metronomic; METRO) drug administration of some anticancer agents can overcome drug resistance and increase drug efficacy in many cancers, but the mechanisms are not understood fully. Previously, we showed that METRO dosing of topotecan (TOPO) is more effective than conventional (CONV) dosing in aggressive human prostate cancer (PCa) cell lines and in mouse tumor xenograft models. To gain mechanistic insights into METRO-TOPO activity, in this study we determined the effect of METRO- and CONV-TOPO treatment in a panel of human PCa cell lines representing castration-sensitive/resistant, androgen receptor (+/-), and those of different ethnicity on cell growth and gene expression.

Introduction: Interprofessional education (IPE) about patient safety positively impacts safety and reduces errors but is challenging to deliver. We aimed to determine if a synchronous virtual IPE program using storytelling and interactive learning impacted student perceptions about patient safety.
Methods: An IPE patient safety program involving medical and pharmacy students was synchronously delivered virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a chronic relapsing condition characterized by problematic opioid use causing significant impairment in daily life. Medication for opioid use disorder using buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone with behavioral therapy reduces illicit opioid use and risk of overdose death. Despite evidence and decades of experience, barriers limit access to treatment and care for individuals with OUD.
