Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of sarcopenia (muscle loss) and systemic inflammation on the effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer patients, considering factors like Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG PS).
  • It involved 100 patients who received immune checkpoint inhibitors, analyzing various systemic inflammation markers to evaluate their relationship with overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS).
  • Results show that sarcopenia and hypoalbuminemia are significant factors linked to poorer survival outcomes, suggesting that monitoring sarcopenia could potentially improve patient prognoses, although more research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to obtain real-life data on the use of antimyeloma agents, which significantly increase overall survival (OS) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients, in primary plasma cell leukemia (pPCL) patients with poor prognosis.

Materials And Methods: Data from 53 patients who were diagnosed with pPCL between 2011 and 2020 and who used at least one proteasome inhibitor (PI) and/or immunomodulatory (IMID) agent were analyzed retrospectively. Depending on the year of the pPCL diagnosis, 20% leukocytes or ≥2x10/L plasma cells in the peripheral blood was used as a diagnostic criterion.

Cardiomyopathy, which is shortly defined as a disease of the myocardium, has a broad definition that includes many different diagnoses. Recent advances in cardiac imaging techniques, including basic and advanced echocardiography, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, and cardiac magnetic resonance, allow for a more accurate evaluation of volumes and thickness of cardiac chambers, systolic and diastolic function of the ventricules, and tissue structure. Multimodality imaging often provides the first clinical suspicion for specific etiologies, especially when the medical and family history is unclear, by identification of red flags of underlying systemic diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is increasingly common and can have serious health risks; this study aimed to assess two different methods of ultrasound-assisted suction curettage for treating CSP.
  • The study compared outcomes of 34 patients treated with traditional suction curettage and 32 patients treated with a modified version after a certain date, focusing on demographic information, clinical findings, and postoperative recovery.
  • Results showed that the modified suction curettage led to less decrease in hemoglobin levels and a lower treatment failure rate, suggesting this method may enhance the effectiveness of the procedure in CSP cases.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of combined deep and superficial serratus anterior block (C-SAPB) against thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) for managing postoperative pain in patients who underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).
  • - Both TPVB and C-SAPB groups included 30 patients each, receiving the same dosage of local anesthetics, with their pain levels measured through visual analog scale (VAS) scores over 48 hours, showing no significant differences in pain management or satisfaction.
  • - The findings suggest that C-SAPB might be a viable alternative to TPVB for postoperative analgesia, with similar outcomes in pain control and fewer complications, alongside a slightly quicker administration process.

Background/aim: This study explored the correlation between maternal muscle mass and strength and the mode of delivery in childbirth. Specifically, it focused on full-term nulliparous pregnant women, analyzing ultrasonographic measurements of the quadriceps femoris muscle together with serum myostatin levels and muscle strength as determined by a handgrip test. The aim was to discern whether these factors could influence the likelihood of delivering vaginally or via cesarean section.

  • - The study investigates the ECG characteristics of 103 acromegaly patients to assess the risk of cardiovascular complications and life expectancy, highlighting the significance of the Tp-e interval and its ratios as indicators of ventricular arrhythmia risk.
  • - Results show that patients with both baseline and current ECGs experienced a decrease in heart rate, QRS duration, and several arrhythmia parameters, which were similarly affected regardless of whether the patients were in active or remission stages of the disease.
  • - The conclusion emphasizes that treatment leads to improved ventricular arrhythmia parameters in acromegaly patients, which correlates with a significant reduction in IGF-1 levels, even in those with ongoing active disease.
