Here we review the Neolithic migrations of thin-tailed sheep and the later introductions of fat-tailed sheep into eastern Africa. The resilience of biological systems to fluctuating environmental conditions is a crucial evolutionary advantage. In this study, we examine the thermo- and piezo-stability of the LH1-RC pigment-protein complex, the simplest photosynthetic unit, in three species of phototropic purple bacteria, each containing only this core complex. Among these species, Blastochloris viridis and Blastochloris tepida utilize bacteriochlorophyll b as the main light-harvesting pigment, while Rhodospirillum rubrum relies on bacteriochlorophyll a.

Although prokaryotic microbes in coking wastewater (CWW) treatment have been comprehensively studied, the ecological functions of viruses remain unclear. A full-scale CWW biological treatment AOHO combination was studied for the virus-bacterium interactions involved in element cycles by metaviromics, metagenomics and physicochemical characteristics. Results showed the unique viromic profile with Cirlivirales and Petitvirales as the dominant viruses infecting functional bacteria hosts.

Background: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified a range of symptomatic manifestations to aid in the clinical diagnosis of post-COVID conditions, herein referred to as post-acute COVID-19 symptoms. We conducted an international network cohort study to estimate the burden of these symptoms in North American, European, and Asian populations.

Methods: A federated analysis was conducted including 10 databases from the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Norway, Estonia, Spain, France, South Korea, and the United States, between September 1st 2020 and latest data availability (which varied from December 31st 2021 to February 28th 2023), covering primary and secondary care, nationwide registries, and claims data, all mapped to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM).

The ability of anthropogenic aerosols to freeze supercooled cloud droplets remains debated. In this work, we present observational evidence for the glaciation of supercooled liquid-water clouds at industrial aerosol hot spots at temperatures between -10° and -24°C. Compared with the nearby liquid-water clouds, shortwave reflectance was reduced by 14% and longwave radiance was increased by 4% in the glaciation-affected regions.

Translation-targeting toxic small alarmone synthetases (toxSAS) are effectors of bacterial toxin-antitoxin systems that pyrophosphorylate the 3'-CCA end of transfer RNA (tRNA) to prevent aminoacylation. toxSAS are implicated in antiphage immunity: Phage detection triggers the toxSAS activity to shut down viral production. We show that the toxSAS FaRel2 inspects the tRNA acceptor stem to specifically select tRNA and tRNA.

This paper has several aims: to determine if Yersinia pestis was the causative agent in the last Scottish plague outbreak in the mid-17th century; map the geographic spread of the epidemic and isolate potential contributing factors to its spread and severity; and examine funerary behaviours in the context of a serious plague epidemic in early modern Scotland. Results confirm the presence of Y. pestis in individuals associated with a mid-17th century plague pit in Aberdeen.

Background: Abnormal patellar height (patella alta) has been reported to be one of the main predisposing factors for recurrent patellar dislocation, and it can be surgically corrected by distalizing tibial tubercle osteotomy (DTTO). Rehabilitation after DTTO often includes limitations on weightbearing and restrictions on knee range of motion by means of bracing, increasing the risk of slow progression of the rehabilitation.

Hypothesis: An active rehabilitation program with no restrictions on weightbearing and range of movement would yield a low risk of postoperative complications and a fast recovery period.
