Organoids are tiny structures, mainly generated from induced pluripotent stem cells, which are cultured in the laboratory while retaining their innate or acquired characteristics. They have the potential to reproduce biological development processes, model pathological processes that will enable the discovery of new drugs and promote regenerative medicine. However, these processes require constant improvement because variations may have occurred in the constitution of the organs.

Every Woman Every Child Latin America and the Caribbean (EWEC-LAC) was established in 2017 as a regional inter-agency mechanism. EWEC-LAC coordinates the regional implementation of the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), including adaptation to region specific needs, to end preventable deaths, ensure health and well-being and expand enabling environments for the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents. To advance the equitable achievement of these objectives, EWEC-LAC's three working groups collectively support LAC countries in measuring and monitoring social inequalities in health, advocating for their reduction, and designing and implementing equity-oriented strategies, policies and interventions.

Background: The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 pandemic pressure on healthcare systems can exhaust ventilator resources, especially where resources are restricted. Our objective was a rapid preclinical evaluation of a newly developed turbine-based ventilator, named the ACUTE-19, for invasive ventilation.
Methods: Validation consisted of (a) testing tidal volume delivery in 11 simulated models, with various resistances and compliances; (b) comparison with a commercial ventilator (VIVO-50) adapting the United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency-recommendations for rapidly manufactured ventilators; and (c) testing in a sheep before and after inducing acute respiratory distress syndrome by saline lavage.

Objective: To identify and compile the findings of observational studies analyzing the relationship of factors from the school food environment and individual factors related to food consumption in school with excess weight in schoolchildren from South America in the period from 2011 to 2021.
Method: The literature review involved a search performed in five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, SciELO, Scopus, and LILACS) and in Google Scholar, as well as a consultation with specialists. Studies were selected if they had an observational design, included schoolchildren aged 5 to 19 years, were performed in South America, and used objective measures such as body mass index (World Health Organization and/or International Obesity Task Force) to assess weight in association with school food environment factors and individual school consumption factors.

: Perilipins 1-5 (PLIN) are lipid droplet-associated proteins that participate in regulating lipid storage and metabolism, and the PLIN5 isoform is known to form a nuclear complex with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) to regulate lipid metabolism gene expression. However, the changes in PLIN isoforms' expression in response to pregnancy-induced cardiac hypertrophy are not thoroughly studied. The aim of this study was to quantify the mRNA expression of PLIN isoforms and PGC-1α along with total triacylglycerol (TAG) and cholesterol levels during late pregnancy and the postpartum period in the rat left ventricle.

In order to describe the changes in the control of arterial hypertension from 2016 to 2021 and the relationship between the progress made and the maturity of implementation of the HEARTS Initiative at the first level of care in Cuba, a prospective implementation study was designed to promote the correct measurement of blood pressure with validated automatic sphygmomanometers, risk-based care, introduction of standardized antihypertensive treatment protocols, secondary prevention, and teamwork. Patient education, active case-finding, and community activities were also encouraged. Data were obtained from implementation logs and were analyzed with SPSS Statistics V21; outcome values and 95% confidence intervals were reported.

Background: The coexistence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with clinical forms of Parkinson disease (PD), although uncommon, is found to a greater degree than one would expect by chance. The pathological mechanisms of ALS and PD are still not fully understood, and the coexistence of these two diseases suggests that they could share mechanisms in common.
Objective: Here we present a sample of patients with clinically definitive or probable ALS who were evaluated with single-photon emission computed tomography SPECT/TRODAT and compared with non-ALS controls.

This special report describes the methodology for calculating the indicator for the adoption of effective mechanisms to counter interference by the tobacco industry and those who work to further its interests, as established in the Strategy and Plan of Action to Strengthen Tobacco Control in the Region of the Americas 2018-2022; the report also presents the status of adoption of these mechanisms in the countries of the Region as of 2019, and progress since 2016. It was found that, as of 2019, of the 35 Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Member States 13 had regulations establishing specific measures for managing conflicts of interest for government officials and employees with responsibility for tobacco control policies; seven had implemented related but nonspecific measures; and 14 had not implemented any measure. Although there has been progress since 2016, efforts must be redoubled to reach the target of 20 Member States having mechanisms for the identification and management of conflicts of interest, as established in the Strategy and Plan of Action.
