Lung transplantation (LuTX) and lung volume reduction (LVR), either surgical (LVRS: lung volume reduction surgery) or endoscopic (ELVR: endoscopic lung volume reduction), are established therapies in the treatment of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Careful patient selection is crucial for each intervention. If these techniques are sequentially applied there is a paucity of available data and individual center experiences vary depending on details in selection criteria and operative technique.

Background: The hypothesis of widely differing lung damage due to commonly used types of quartz was studied in 16 samples of respirable quartzes (> 99% silica) from sites of the European quartz industry, using an in vitro test, the vector model. Two samples with high and 2 with low biological activities were identified and subsequently examined for their in vivo lung toxicity (inflammation, fibrosis, genotoxicity) and surface characteristics. Alveolar macrophages (AM) are considered the target cells of primary dust effects.

Background: Recently a new human virus (GBV-C/HGV) was identified. With the use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) the possibility of a high prevalence of the GBV-C/HGV infection in haemodialysis patients was demonstrated. The aim of the present study was to use a combination of the PCR and a new diagnostic test for antibodies to the viral envelope protein E2 to assess the prevalence of the GBV-C/HGV infection in German patients with renal failure.
