Meriç Delta, which has a wide variety of ecosystems, is an A Class Wetland and the most significant natural stagnant freshwater ecosystem located in the south-western of Thrace Region of Türkiye. In this research, heavy metals (Cr, Ni, As, Cd, and Pb) were investigated in the surface water and Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) obtained from Meriç Delta lakes (Gala, Pamuklu, Sığırcı, and Dalyan), which are located on an important migration route of water birds. The heavy metals in surface water samples and fish tissues were determined by ICP-MS.

Background: The dentinal debris produced during root canal preparation can be extruded through the apical foramen, which may cause undesired consequences, such as the postoperative inflammation of periapical tissues.

Objectives: The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of glide path preparation on apical debris extrusion for the Reciproc®, WaveOne Gold® and One Curve file systems.

Material And Methods: A total of 72 mandibular incisors were divided into 6 groups according to the nickel-titanium (NiTi) system used and glide path preparation: group Rp - Reciproc; group Rp-O - Reciproc after glide path preparation; group WG - WaveOne Gold; group WG-O - WaveOne Gold after glide path preparation; group OC - One Curve; and group OC-O - One Curve after glide path preparation.

  • Cutaneous melanoma frequently spreads to the parotid glands, but there's limited research on using fine-needle aspiration (FNA) to diagnose these metastatic cases.
  • This study examined four patients with parotid masses, revealing atypical cells and other features through FNA and immunohistochemical tests.
  • The findings highlight that diagnosing melanoma in such cases can be difficult without a prior history, necessitating careful consideration and additional testing to confirm the diagnosis.

Faculty of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Eskişehir, 26480, Turkey.

Purpose: To determine the frequency and clinical features of new- and early-onset benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) after different otologic surgical operations with and without surgical drilling.

Methods: All unilateral otologic operations performed at the otolaryngology clinic of a tertiary university hospital between January 2021 and May 2023 were screened, and 437 adult cases were included in the study. Of these patients, those who were diagnosed with BPPV within the first month postoperatively were examined.

  • In Turkey, a single-dose varicella vaccine was introduced in February 2013, aiming to reduce hospitalizations related to chickenpox among children under 18 years old.
  • A study analyzed hospitalization data from 2008 to 2018, comparing rates before and after the vaccine's introduction, finding a significant decrease in hospitalizations (3.79 to 2.87 per 100,000 children per year).
  • The most notable reduction was in children aged 1-5 years, with a 60.2% drop in hospitalizations post-vaccine, demonstrating the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing severe cases of varicella.

The present work is first aimed at recovering graphite from carbon rods of waste zinc-carbon (Zn-C) batteries for applications such as wastewater treatment, in order to contribute to the development of a sustainable environment. Then, a composite material, cobalt-iron layered double hydroxide combination with reduced graphene oxide, and with subsequent Ag nanoparticles deposition via NaBH reduction method (Ag/CoFe-LDH/rGO) was prepared for the catalytic activity of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Safranine-O (SO) as model contaminants from aquatic media. The catalytic activity of RhB and SO by Ag/CoFe-LDH/rGO in the presence of NaBH was studied to model and optimize the process parameters (NaBH amount, reaction time, initial dye concentration (), and catalyst dosage) via central composite design (CCD)-response surface methodology (RSM).

  • This study looked at how well a deep learning system can identify the stages of tooth development using special images called panoramic radiographs from kids aged 5 to 14.
  • They used a computer model called YOLOv5 to analyze 1500 images, finding out how many times it got the right answers and how many mistakes it made.
  • The results showed that the model was really good at finding the correct stages of tooth development, which can help dentists make better decisions for treating kids' dental needs.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Department of Medical Services and Techniques, Vocational School of Burdur Health Services, Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Burdur, 15100, Türkiye.

High-density genomic data analyzed by accurate statistical methods are of potential to enlighten past breeding practices such as selection by unraveling fixed regions. In this study, four native Turkish sheep breeds (80 samples) were genotyped via 296.097 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) detected by double-digest restriction site-associated DNA (ddRADseq) library preparation combined with the Illumina HiSeq X Ten instrument in order to identify genes under selection pressure.

  • Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) help lower blood glucose and sodium levels by promoting their excretion in urine, leading to benefits like reduced heart failure (HF) hospitalizations in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular (CV) risks.
  • Clinical trials like DAPA-HF and EMPEROR-Reduced demonstrate that SGLT2i medications (dapagliflozin and empagliflozin) significantly reduce CV mortality and HF hospitalizations in heart failure patients, whether they have T2DM or not.
  • Recent studies, including EMPEROR-Preserved and DELIVER, also support the effectiveness of SGLT2is in treating heart

October 2024

Balikesir University, Cagis Yerleskesi, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy, 10145, Balıkesir, Turkey. Electronic address:

Background: Current models of major depressive disorder (MDD) primarily focus on the structural and functional changes in key prefrontal areas responsible for emotional regulation. Among these regions some sections such as the dorsal prefrontal area, has received limited attention regarding its structural abnormalities in MDD. This study aims to evaluate volumetric abnormalities in brain regions associated with markers of depression severity and episode frequency.
