Staged repair of severe open abdomens due to high-energy gunshot injuries with early vacuum pack and delayed tissue expansion and dual-sided meshes.

Background: Open abdomen is a salvage procedure that prevents catastrophes after severe intraabdominal traumas. However, following this life saving attempt, it is mostly not feasible to close the abdomen immediately after the recovery of intraabdominal injuries. Consequently, a staged reconstruction is required, and the first stage is usually a temporary closing approach.

The relation between ischemia modified albumin levels and carotid intima media thickness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases, among which atherosclerotic heart disease, are known to be one of the most important mortality and morbidity causes in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) is a potential marker that can be used to assess atherosclerosis-related myocardial ischemia. Another frequently used marker for the assessment of atherosclerotic lesions is the carotid intima media thickness (CIMT).

Causative pathogens and antibiotic resistance in diabetic foot infections: A prospective multi-center study.

Aim: Clinical practice guidelines for the management of diabetic foot infections developed by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) are commonly used worldwide. The issue of whether or not these guidelines need to be adjusted for local circumstances, however, has seldom been assessed in large prospective trials.

Methods: The Turk-DAY trial was a prospective, multi-center study in which infectious disease specialists from centers across Turkey were invited to participate (NCT02026830).

Novel myokine: irisin may be an independent predictor for subclinic atherosclerosis in Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a vasculitic and inflammatory disease causing endothelial dysfunction. Irisin is a metabolic hormone related to insulin resistance and endothelial functions. In this study, we investigated the relationship between irisin and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), which is a marker of atherosclerosis in patients with BD.

Age and Aortic Diameters in Pilots.

Background: Pilots are exposed to various physical and hemodynamic stresses during flight. Aortic dilatation may be one of the important consequences of flight-related stress. In this study, we evaluated whether or not variation in aortic diameter was associated with the type of aircraft and the age of pilots.

Endocan Levels and Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology. A major cause of morbidity and mortality in SLE is accelerated atherosclerosis. Endothelial-specific molecule 1 (endocan) is a potential predictor of vascular events and is expressed in response to inflammatory cytokines in endothelial cells.

Testis-Sparing Surgery in Small Testicular Masses Not Suspected to Be Malignant.

Unlabelled: Fifteen patients with small testicular masses not suspected to be malignant were included in the study, and permanent and frozen section analyses were evaluated. As a result frozen analysis, preoperative externalization of the suspected malignancy with a physical examination, ultrasonographic evaluation, and serum tumor marker analysis were concluded as key points for accurate decision making between TSS and radical orchiectomy.

Background: We aimed to determine the safety, efficacy, and the concordance of permanent and frozen section analysis (FSA) of testis-sparing surgery (TSS) in patients who had small testicular masses that were not suspected to be malignant.

A rare case of penis agenesis (Aphallia) with associated multiple urogenital anomalies.

The penis as a component of external genitalia, takes part in fertility, urinary and psychosexual structure of males with its complex character. We report a case of penis agenesis with associated left renal agenesis, left superior segment ureteral agenesis, prostate agenesis, left ureterocele, right vesicoureteral reflux and high urethrorectal communication above the rectal sphincter. The patient refused any surgical intervention because of his religious beliefs.

A novel technique for spreader graft placement without dorsum resection during septoplasty.

Objective: This paper presents a novel method for spreader graft placement without dorsum resection in patients who have a deviated septum with a narrow internal nasal valve angle.

Methods: A Killian incision was used for the endonasal septoplasty, and all spreader grafts were harvested from excised deviated septal cartilages. Procedures were conducted under general anaesthesia at the same centre by the same surgical team that performed the endonasal procedure.

A prospective randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) appears to enhance wound healing, increase bactericidal activity, and act synergistically with a number of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of HBOT as an adjunctive therapy in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) treated with a combination of systemic rifampicin and clindamycin. The study was a prospective, single-center, single-dose, open-label, randomized controlled clinical study of HBOT in patients with moderate to severe HS.

Ischemia-Modified Albumin and Atherosclerosis in Patients With Familial Mediterranean Fever.

The constriction of vessels due to atherosclerotic lesions causes hypoxia/ischemia and oxidative changes resulting in transformation of free albumin to ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in the circulation and increased carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). We investigated the reliability of IMA increase in evaluating atherosclerosis in patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) compared with cIMT. Patients with FMF (n = 58) diagnosed by the Tel-Hashomer criteria in attack-free period and 38 healthy people were included in the study.

Arterial stiffness and endothelial inflammation in prediabetes and newly diagnosed diabetes patients.

Objective: There is a growing body of data supporting the association between diabetes and microcirculatory disfunction. We aimed to study e-selectin levels, and their associations with serum markers of inflammation and arterial stiffness in prediabetes and newly diagnosed diabetes patients in this study.

Subjects And Methods: Sixty patients (25 females) with a newly established elevated fasting serum glucose [20 impaired fasting glucose (IFG), 20 impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), 20 newly diagnosed diabetes (T2DM)] and 17 healthy controls (13 females) were included in the study.
