The biomedical applications of artificial intelligence: an overview of decades of research.

J Drug Target

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutics, Bharat Pharmaceutical Technology, Amtali, Agartala, Tripura, India.

A significant area of computer science called artificial intelligence (AI) is successfully applied to the analysis of intricate biological data and the extraction of substantial associations from datasets for a variety of biomedical uses. AI has attracted significant interest in biomedical research due to its features: (i) better patient care through early diagnosis and detection; (ii) enhanced workflow; (iii) lowering medical errors; (v) lowering medical costs; (vi) reducing morbidity and mortality; (vii) enhancing performance; (viii) enhancing precision; and (ix) time efficiency. Quantitative metrics are crucial for evaluating AI implementations, providing insights, enabling informed decisions, and measuring the impact of AI-driven initiatives, thereby enhancing transparency, accountability, and overall impact.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic contributed enormously to the psychosocial distress of Indian healthcare providers. The mental well-being of the healthcare community remains an underappreciated priority in India. The primary objective was to observe the results of an online brief mindfulness-based intervention on stress, anxiety, and depression, and the secondary objective was to examine its effects on mindfulness characteristics and World health Organization (WHO) quality of life among Indian healthcare providers during pandemic times.

Ossicular Reconstruction with TORP: Does Malleus has a Role?

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

December 2024

Sri Guru Ram Das University Of Health Sciences, House No.653 Block-I BRS Nagar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Punjab India.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of the malleus in hearing restoration through a prosthesis, comparing outcomes in patients where the malleus was preserved versus those where it was removed during ossiculoplasty.
  • - It included 60 patients, showing significant hearing improvement in both groups post-surgery, with an emphasis on how the malleus affects auditory outcomes and implant stability.
  • - Results indicated that while both groups achieved similar levels of post-operative hearing improvement, preserving the malleus (M +) led to a greater average reduction in air-bone gap compared to its removal (M-).

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic ear diseases often lead to ossicular defects, requiring the use of ossicular reconstruction prostheses like TORP (total ossicular replacement prosthesis) and PORP (partial ossicular replacement prosthesis) to restore hearing continuity.
  • - Research shows that using a malleus to footplate reconstruction yields better mechanical outcomes than malleus to stapes superstructure, but long-term effectiveness of TORP versus PORP remains unclear.
  • - A study involving 60 patients with Austin type A defects found significant post-operative improvements in hearing for both TORP and PORP groups, with 90% of patients showing mild hearing loss after surgery compared to their pre-operative condition.

The objective of this article is to evaluate the salivary levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-2 (IL-2), and IL-10 in patients with active psoriasis and compare them with those in healthy control subjects. This study included 60 subjects who were clinically diagnosed cases with active psoriasis (categorized further into 33 mild to moderate and 27 severe cases based on the Psoriasis Area Severity Index score) and 60 age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects. Levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-2, and IL-10 in the unstimulated saliva of subjects were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (BT Lab).

Article Synopsis
  • * The survey received an 85% response rate from 98 uropathologists, revealing strong agreement on distinguishing between luminal and basal UC types, but varied opinions on the importance of certain genetic tests like FGFR3 and TERT promoter mutations.
  • * Most uropathologists acknowledged the aggressive nature of tumors with micropapillary features and favored further evaluation and specific molecular testing for aggressive subtypes, indicating a need for improved consensus in UC classification and treatment strategies.

The aim of the study is to expound the effect of psoriasis on salivary glands by evaluating the secretion of saliva and salivary cytokine biomarkers in patients with psoriasis. This study was conducted by recruiting 120 subjects that included 60 patients diagnosed clinically with active psoriasis and 60 healthy controls who were age and gender matched to psoriatic subjects. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected from all the subjects by spitting method, and levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-2 (IL-2), and IL-10 (IL-10) were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (BT Lab, Shanghai, China).

Background: This study aimed to evaluate post-operative outcomes by comparing factors such as post-operative pain, duration of hospitalization, time needed to resume normal and full activities, and complications between laparoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) and Lichtenstein tension-free mesh hernioplasty or repair (LMR) for inguinal hernias.

Materials And Methods: A prospective study was conducted involving male patients undergoing either LMR or laparoscopic TEP mesh repair, with 30 patients in each group. The study assessed post-operative pain, duration of hospital stay, return to normal activities, and complications.

Orbital spindle cell hemangioma with acute presentation.

Indian J Pathol Microbiol

July 2024

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, MCV Memorial ENT Trust Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.

We report an unusual presentation of an orbital spindle cell hemangioma in a 40-year-old male, who noted sudden redness and swelling of the left eye on waking up. On examination, the patient was found to have edema of upper eyelid edema, periorbital ecchymosis, and subconjunctival hemorrhage in the left eye at presentation. On treatment with topical medications, patient had transient symptomatic relief; however, he later developed blurring of vision.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the impact of mindfulness on various psychological and physical aspects of chronic pain among Indian patients, highlighting a lack of awareness about its psychosocial dimension.
  • Patients were divided into two groups, with one receiving mindfulness sessions and the other standard care, and their progress was measured using statistical analyses before and after the programs.
  • Results showed significant improvement in pain intensity, acceptance, and perceived stress for the mindfulness group, suggesting its potential benefits but also indicating the need for further research on its broader effects.

Introduction Cervical cancer is the most common gynaecological malignancy worldwide, with a higher prevalence in middle- and low-income countries. Chemoradiotherapy, followed by intracavitary brachytherapy, is the treatment of choice in locally advanced cervical cancer. The most common acute side effect of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is bowel toxicity in the form of diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

October 2023

At the Garg Fistula Research Institute, Panchkula, India, Pankaj Garg, MBBS, MS, is Senior Colorectal Surgeon. In the Department of Dermatology, ESI Hospital, Delhi, Priyanka Hemrajani, MD, MBBS, is Senior Resident.

This is the first demonstrated case in which terminal hairs that resembled occipital hairs and ranged from 2 to 13 cm in length were extracted from a patient with primary pilonidal sinus disease. This case provides evidence that occipital hairs may enter the pilonidal sinus and perhaps also play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Background And Aims: Most studies have found that lumbar epidural catheterisation is technically easier with a paramedian than median approach. There is scant literature comparing the two approaches to the epidural space in the mid-thoracic spine. This study aims to compare the median versus paramedian approaches in the location of epidural space in the T7-9 region in patients undergoing laparotomy under combined general and epidural anaesthesia.
