Diabetes mellitus with pulmonary tuberculosis--a double trouble.

Diabetic patients are often at a higher risk for developing several types of infections and infection does alter the handling of glucose by tissues. Pulmonary infections in diabetics are characterised by alteration in host defence, in entire body and in the lung locally as well as in the function of respiratory epithelium and ciliary motility. Association between diabetes mellitus and pulmonary tuberculosis is well established, while the prevalence of tuberculosis is increased 4-5 times more among diabetics.

Percutaneous trans-hepatic gelfoam-cyanoacrylate glue embolization for ruptured post-traumatic hepatic artery pseudo-aneurysm in a limited-resource scenario.

Introduction: We present our experience with an indigenously designed percutaneous trans-hepatic ultrasound-guided Gelfoam sponge cum cyanoacrylate glue-based embolization technique for the treatment of a ruptured post-traumatic aneurysm of a branch of the right hepatic artery (RHA) as a 'life-saving emergent' procedure in a patient unfit for surgery or endovascular intervention and in a 'limited-resource' scenario (non-availability of Digital Subtraction Angiography Suite).

Case Details: An 8-year-old boy sustained crush-injury to the right lobe of the liver in a road-traffic accident and presented in shock. After resuscitation, a laparotomy and repair of the right lobe of liver were undertaken.

Treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recessions in a single surgical approach with expanded subepithelial connective tissue graft - An innovative approach.

Background: Gingival recession on anterior teeth compromises facial esthetics and is associated with dentinal hypersensitivity. Multiple teeth recession requires multiple surgeries for adequate coverage.

Methods: Six anterior mandibular teeth were treated with single Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft (SCTG) expanded with the use of alternate vertical incisions.

Management of a transmigrated mandibular canine.

The purpose of this article is to report the management of a transmigrated mandibular canine with emphasis on saving the tooth as natural part rather than surgical removal of the transmigrated tooth. There are several treatment options proposed for impacted mandibular canines including surgical removal, exposure and orthodontic alignment, intra-alveolar tooth transplantation (surgical repositioning of a tooth in its alveolar socket) and observation. The technique, surgical repositioning of a tooth involves the surgical extraction of impacted tooth and fixation in the correct position in the dental arch after surgical preparation (correction) of the alveolar socket.

Are full cast crowns mandatory after endodontic treatment in posterior teeth?

The success of endodontic treatment is not only measured by the alleviation of pain and formation of healthy bone, replacing the diseased periapical tissue. Concepts for restoring pulpless teeth have been formed more from clinical observation than valid scientific investigation. Endodontically treated posterior teeth present numerous problems because of coronal destruction from dental caries, fractures, and previous restorations or endodontic techniques.

Dental amalgam: An update.

Dental amalgam has served as an excellent and versatile restorative material for many years, despite periods of controversy. The authors review its history, summarize the evidence with regard to its performance and offer predictions for the future of this material. The PubMed database was used initially; the reference list for dental amalgam featured 8641 articles and 13 publications dealing with recent advances in dental amalgam.

Anomalous formation of external jugular vein and its clinical implication.

Introduction: The superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein (EJV), are increasingly being utilized for cannulation to conduct diagnostic procedures or intravenous therapies. EJV is also used in microsurgical procedures,used as a recipient for the free flaps.

Materials And Methods: During routine dissection a variation was observed in the formation of EJV unilaterally on the left side.

Cognitive psychiatry in India.

Cognitive deficits have been shown to exist in various psychiatric disorders. Though most Indian studies pertaining to cognition have been replication studies, well designed original studies have also been conducted. This article traces the evolution of cognitive psychiatry in India.

Random control trial of dermis-fat graft and interposition of temporalis fascia in the management of temporomandibular ankylosis in children.

Temporomandibular ankylosis is a disabling condition that affects hygiene and cosmetic appearance. Several interpositional grafts such as meniscus, muscle, fascia, skin, cartilage, fat, dura, alloplastic materials and xenografts have been used to prevent recurrence of ankylosis. We studied the advantages and disadvantages of dermis fat graft as an interposition material after arthroplasty and compared it with temporalis fascia interposition.
