Little is known about the attitude of newly qualified doctors towards intimate examination of children. During the 2 course of a training day in child protection, an exercise was undertaken to ask Foundation doctors (FY2) what impact they thought genitalia examination had on children. These responses have been compared with the only systematic examination of the response of children and their parents to such examinations that has been published.

Myopericarditis following Campylobacter infection.

Background: Myopericarditis can be caused by a wide range of infectious agents. There are a few reported cases implicating Campylobacter in the pathogenesis of myopericarditis.

Conclusions: We believe that this case report represents the first documented case in Ireland of myopericarditis associated with Campylobacter enteritis.

Massive colonic haematoma following blunt trauma sustained playing rugby.

A case is presented of a 24-year-old man who sustained a forceful blow to the right side of the abdomen during a tackle while playing rugby union. The patient was thought to be "winded" and could not play on. He sought medical attention several hours later at the local hospital where initial evaluation revealed mild right iliac fossa tenderness with no signs of peritonism and clinical parameters showed haemodynamic stability.

Anton's syndrome due to cerebrovascular disease: a case report.

Introduction: Anton's syndrome describes the condition in which patients deny their blindness despite objective evidence of visual loss, and moreover confabulate to support their stance. It is a rare extension of cortical blindness in which, in addition to the injury to the occipital cortex, other cortical centres are also affected, with patients typically behaving as if they were sighted.

Case Presentation: We present a case report of an 83-year-old white woman with cortical blindness as a result of bilateral occipital lobe infarcts.

Lemierre's syndrome is an oropharyngeal infection which leads to severe septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and metastatic abscesses of the lungs and other organs. It is usually caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, a Gram-negative obligate anaerobe. An unusual case of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing Staphylococcus aureus infection masquerading as Lemierre's syndrome is reported here.

Achieving quality assurance standards in colposcopy practice: a teaching hospital experience.

Objective: To assess the performance of the colposcopy service of the teaching hospitals of Cardiff and Vale Trust, University of Wales, Cardiff, South Wales, UK by determining if patients attending colposcopy clinic had been managed in accordance with the local departmental, regional and national (National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme) guidelines with the ultimate purpose of identifying areas for improvement in patients' care.

Methods: We retrospectively analysed the case notes of 426 women who attended the colposcopy clinic over a three-month period in 2005.

Results: This study has shown that five of the national standards have been achieved.

We describe the interesting case of a young man who presented with a lateral neck node that was diagnosed as a branchial cyst. Histopathology of the excised node revealed that a papillary carcinoma was located within thyroid tissue, which in turn was located within a branchial cyst. A total thyroidectomy with local lymph node clearance was performed.

In order to assess the feasibility and outcome of using prehospital thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction in a rural community, we performed an open randomized study of patients with symptoms of acute myocardial infarction of less than 6 hours.
