Introduction: Preconception obesity is a risk factor for pregnancy and delivery, which is why giving birth in a perinatal center (care levels I and II) is recommended. There are currently no studies which have investigated the birth outcomes of obese patients based on the care level of the maternity hospital. This study aims to assess the effect of a higher body mass index prior to conception on maternal and fetal outcomes in a maternity hospital (care level IV).

Background: Previous studies in mouse, and zebrafish embryos show strong expression in progenitor cells of neuronal and neural crest tissues suggesting its involvement in neural crest specification. However, the role of human transcription factor activator protein 2 ( in human embryonic central nervous system (CNS), orofacial and maxillofacial development is unknown.

Methods: Through a collaborative work, exome survey was performed in families with congenital CNS, orofacial and maxillofacial anomalies.

Background And Objectives: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with one in eight women suffering from this disease in her lifetime. The implementation of centrally organized mammography screening for women between 50 and 69 years of age was a major step in the direction of early detection. However, the participation rate reaches approximately 50% of the eligible women, one reason being the painful compression of the breast, cited as a major issue for not participating in this very important program.

Background: Over 50% of pregnant women use pregnancy applications (apps). Some app s lack credibility, information accuracy, and evidence-based clinical advice, containing potentially harmful functionality. Previous studies have only conducted a limited analysis of pregnancy app functionalities, expert involvement/evidence-based content, used commercialization techniques, and user perception.

Interferential Current Stimulation Enhances Rectal Motor Activity: Insights from an Isolated Perfused Porcine Model.

Eur J Pediatr Surg

December 2024

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Universitätsmedizin Mannheim, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Introduction:  Interferential current (IFC) has been studied in several clinical trials for the treatment of bowel motility disorders, most often in children. However, only moderate effects are reported, and in contrast to IFC, the so-called placebo application is indiscernible. The mechanisms and neuroanatomic points of action remain elusive.

Impact of CCND1 amplification on the prognosis of hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer patients-correlation of clinical and pathological markers.

Breast Cancer Res Treat

November 2024

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Erlangen University Hospital, Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen-EMN (CCC ER-EMN) / Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), Universitätsstrasse 21-23, 91054, Erlangen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of CCND1 gene amplification in the prognosis of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients, particularly in the context of resistance to endocrine therapy.
  • A cohort of 894 breast cancer patients was analyzed, revealing that 12.9% had CCND1 amplification, predominantly in luminal B-like and HER2-positive tumor types.
  • The findings indicate that while CCND1 amplification is common in certain breast cancer subtypes, it does not show significant differences in disease-free survival or overall survival among HR-positive, HER2-negative patients.

  • Hybrid imaging with PET/CT has transformed how we visualize metabolic and protein activity in inflammatory diseases, offering a full-body view.
  • It can detect inflammation in joints before actual structural damage occurs, making it a key tool in early diagnosis.
  • The review highlights the use of FAPI-PET/CT, which targets fibroblast activation protein, to assess inflammation and monitor treatment effectiveness in these conditions.

  • This report presents the first documented case of a giant cell tumor in the larynx, diagnosed through molecular genetic analysis.
  • A 50-year-old non-smoking male experienced persistent hoarseness for 3 months, and imaging revealed a sizable tumor on his thyroid cartilage, leading to a total laryngectomy.
  • Detailed microscopic analysis showed a mix of mononuclear cells and osteoclast-like giant cells, with molecular testing identifying a significant mutation in the H3-3A gene.

Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) represents an emerging probe-based intraoperative optical imaging modality, contingent on differential fluoroscein uptake, equipped to improve intraoperative identification of subclinical mucosal disease. In the analysis herein, we describe improved sensitivity, compared to narrow band imaging and small-volume tissue biopsies, of CLE in the discrimination of occult disease based on cellular and subcellular morphology during endoscopic resection of early-staged larynx cancers. Background: Assessment of breast volume has a relevance for aesthetic surgery and for the prevention and prediction of breast diseases. This study investigated breast volume measurements using a three-dimensional (3D) body surface scanner integrated in a smartphone device in comparison with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

Methods: Breast volume was assessed for 22 women who underwent routine MRI imaging.

Aims: Previous work has identified several limitations in "Summaries of Product Characteristics" (SmPCs), which are associated with risks for patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate pharmacists' and physicians' interpretation of contraindications in SmPCs and reasons for their nonadherence in clinical routine.

Methods: For 20 commonly missed or ignored absolute contraindications, an anonymous online survey providing 24 clinical example cases (one or two per contraindication) for physicians and pharmacists was developed.

Evaluation of endocervical curettage (ECC) in colposcopy for detecting cervical intraepithelial lesions.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

December 2024

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen-European Metropolitan Area of Nuremberg (CCC ER-EMN), Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen University Hospital, Universitaetsstrasse 21-23, 91054, Erlangen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the diagnostic challenges of colposcopy in women aged 50 and older, particularly those with postmenopausal status and transformation zone type 3 (TZ3), highlighting the role of endocervical curettage (ECC) in diagnosing cervical lesions.
  • By analyzing data from colposcopies performed at Erlangen University Hospital between 2016 and 2023, researchers correlated Pap and HPV results with histologic findings from ECC.
  • The findings reveal that ECC can effectively detect significant lesions, including high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive carcinoma, even in patients with normal colposcopic results, underscoring its importance in diagnostic procedures.

Objective: To investigate how different combinations of T1-weighted (T1w), T2-weighted (T2w), and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) impact the performance of virtual contrast-enhanced (vCE) breast MRI.

Materials And Methods: The IRB-approved, retrospective study included 1064 multiparametric breast MRI scans (age: 52 ± 12 years) obtained from 2017 to 2020 (single site, two 3-T MRI). Eleven independent neural networks were trained to derive vCE images from varying input combinations of T1w, T2w, and multi-b-value DWI sequences (b-value = 50-1500 s/mm).
