Insights and Trends in Open Note Access: Retrospective Observational Study.

J Med Internet Res

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Informatics, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, United States.

Background: As of 2021, at least 4 out of every 5 hospitals offered patients access to clinical notes via a web-based patient portal, a number that is expected to grow because of the 21st Century Cures Act. There is limited data on how open note use may have evolved over time or which types of clinical interactions were viewed most in the outpatient setting.

Objective: This study aims to analyze trends in outpatient open note access over time; characterize usage in terms of age, sex, and clinical interaction type; and assess the method of access to help uncover areas of improvement in patient engagement and identify further areas of research.

Using Animation to Address Disparities in Kidney Transplantation.

Health Commun

October 2024

Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo.

This essay reviews an arts-based project based in Buffalo, New York, seeking to educate patients with kidney failure and their social network about the transplantation process. Through a multi-phase arts-based research project, informed by a community-based steering committee and key stakeholders, 33 educational animated videos were developed and tested for efficacy in samples of diverse patients at a regional transplant center. Animation was chosen for its potential to better explain health concepts more sensibly to patients and support knowledge dissemination to their social network, who may donate a kidney or support a recipient or donor.

Article Synopsis
  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a major cause of kidney failure and can reoccur after transplantation, leading to poor outcomes, prompting research into bleselumab, a drug targeting the CD40 pathway, to prevent recurrent FSGS.
  • A phase 2a study tested bleselumab combined with standard immunosuppressants in kidney transplant patients with a history of FSGS, comparing its effectiveness to the standard care regimen over 12 months.
  • The study found no significant difference in the recurrence of FSGS between bleselumab and standard care, though bleselumab showed a slight decrease in proteinuria,

Introduction Triggering the immune system via antigenic stimulation at the time of spinal fusion surgery may enhance bone morphogenesis and result in successful bony arthrodesis. We sought to demonstrate that bone morphogenesis could be enhanced via antigenic immunologic stimulation of a surgical fusion site. Methods New Zealand white rabbits underwent non-instrumented posterolateral fusion of L5-6 with implantation of either an immunologically activated graft (inert beta-tricalcium phosphate) or harvested autograft.

The Magic Number 63 - Redefining the Geriatric Age for Massive Transfusion in Trauma.

J Surg Res

September 2024

Department of Surgery, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York; Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery, Department of Surgery, Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, New York. Electronic address:

Introduction: The arbitrary geriatric age cutoff of 65 may not accurately define older adults at higher risk of mortality following massive transfusion (MT). We sought to redefine a new geriatric age threshold for MT and understand its association with outcomes.

Material And Methods: The 2013-2018 Trauma Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all adults who received ≥10 units of packed red blood cells (pRBCs) within 24 h of admission.

Background: We hypothesized that alemtuzumab use is safe in pediatric kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) with equivalent long-term outcomes compared to other induction agents.

Methods: Using pediatric kidney transplant recipient data in the UNOS database between January 1, 2000, and June 30, 2022, multivariate logistic regression, multivariable Cox regression, and survival analyses were utilized to estimate the likelihoods of 1st-year and all-time hospitalizations, acute rejection, CMV infection, delayed graft function (DGF), graft loss, and patient mortality among recipients of three common induction regimens (ATG, alemtuzumab, and basiliximab).

Results: There were no differences in acute rejection or graft failure among induction or maintenance regimens.

Head and neck cancers are a complex malignancy comprising multiple anatomical sites, with cancer of the oral cavity ranking among the deadliest and the most disfiguring cancers globally. Oral cancer (OC) constitutes a subset of head and neck cancer cases, presenting primarily as tobacco- and alcohol-associated oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), with a 5-year survival rate of ~ 65%, partly due to the lack of early detection and effective treatments. OSCC arises from premalignant lesions (PMLs) in the oral cavity through a multi-step series of clinical and histopathological stages, including varying degrees of epithelial dysplasia.
