Perceived burden and family functioning among informal caregivers of individuals living with schizophrenia in Tanzania: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Globally, families play a critical role in providing care and support for persons living with schizophrenia. It is important to identify potentially modifiable factors that influence perceived caregiver burden in order to properly address the needs of caregivers. This is especially relevant in low-resource settings where psychiatric services are scarce and interventions could be most effective if targeted to both the individual living with schizophrenia and their caregiver.

Urge incontinence is the most frequent type of urinary incontinence that can be due to bladder outlet obstruction or overactive bladder. A focused history is crucial to identify the type of urinary incontinence and the possible etiology. We report the case of a 67-year-old man with urinary frequency, urgency, and nocturia.

Adjunctive berberine reduces antipsychotic-associated weight gain and metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia: a randomized controlled trial.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of berberine as an adjuvant in treating antipsychotic-associated weight gain and metabolic syndrome.

Methods: One hundred thirteen participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders who had developed metabolic syndrome were recruited. They were randomly assigned to berberine (600 mg/d, n = 58) or placebo (n = 55) groups for 12 weeks.

Clinical validation of the parent-report Toronto Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (TOCS): A pediatric open-source rating scale.

Background: There is a need to develop a multipurpose obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) measure that is useful for cross disorder research and as a reliable clinical rating scale. The current study examined the psychometric properties and established clinical cutoffs for the parent-report version of the Toronto Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (TOCS), a 21-item rating scale of obsessive-compulsive traits.

Method: Participants ranged in age from 6 to 21 years old and had a primary diagnosis of OCD ( = 350, 50% female), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) ( = 820, 25% female), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ( = 794, 22% female), or were typically developing controls ( = 391, 51% female).

Evaluation of complete blood cell count parameters and lymphocyte-related ratios in patients with Opioid Use Disorder.

Complete blood count (CBC) parameters and lymphocyte-related ratios are found to be associated with inflammation and increased cytokine production. In Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), CBC parameters can be examined as the inflammatory (oxidative stress) biomarkers which could be used as an objective marker to support the OUD diagnosis and could be used as a disease severity marker. CBC parameters of 142 patients with OUD were examined.

Differential effects of alcohol-drinking patterns on the structure and function of the brain and cognitive performance in young adult drinkers: A pilot study.

Introduction: This study was aimed to determine how different patterns of alcohol consumption drive changes to brain structure and function and their correlation with cognitive impairments in young adult alcohol drinkers.

Methods: In this study, we enrolled five groups participants and defined as: long-term abstinence from alcohol (LA), binge drinking (BD), long-term low dosage alcohol consumption but exceeding the safety drinking dosage (LD), long-term alcohol consumption of damaging dosage (LDD), and long-term heavy drinking (HD). All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional MRI (fMRI) to acquire data on brain structure and function, including gray matter volume (GMV), fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), functional connectivity (FC), and brain network properties.

Objectives/background: Intellectual giftedness is characterized by an intellectual development superior to peers, while emotional and relational developments correspond to the age norms. Few empirical researches have investigated sleep profile of gifted children (GC) and its association with their well-being, all of which used IQ as the sole definition criteria for GC. This study aimed to investigate the interaction between giftedness and sleep on socio-emotional functioning.

Serum hepcidin / ferroportin levels in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Background: Despite several alternatives for cellular iron influx, the only mechanism for cellular iron efflux is ferroportin mediated active transport. In cases of ferroportin dysfunction, iron accumulates in the cell and causes ferroptosis. Hepcidin suppresses ferroportin levels and inflammatory activation increases hepcidin production.

Physical activity, physical fitness and quality of life in outpatients with major depressive disorder versus matched healthy controls: Data from a low-income country.

Background: There is an urgent need to increase awareness that people with major depressive disorder (MDD) in low-income countries do also have a compromised physical health. We compared physical fitness and physical activity levels in outpatients with MDD with healthy matched controls in Uganda and explored whether the variance in quality of life (QoL) can be explained by the variance in physical fitness and physical activity levels.

Methods: Fifty outpatients (35 men, median age = 29 years, interquartile range = 14 years) and 50 age, gender and body mass index matched controls performed a 6-minute walk test (6MWT), the World Health Organization Quality of Life short-version (WHOQoLBref), Simple Physical Activity Questionnaire (SIMPAQ), and Brief Symptoms Inventory-18 (BSI-18).

Mortality Rates during Hospitalization and Affecting Factors in Geriatric Delirium Patients: a Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background And Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of mortality during hospitalization among patients diagnosed with delirium at geriatric consultations requested in the previous one year, together with the factors affecting this.

Can Temperament and Character Traits Be Used in the Diagnostic Differentiation of Children With ADHD?

In this study, it was aimed to determine the contributions of temperament and character traits to the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Thirty-six patients between the ages of 9 and 14 with a diagnosis of combined type ADHD and 39 healthy children were included in the study. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version-Turkish Version and the Turgay DSM-IV Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale parent form were used to assess hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattentiveness, and comorbid disorders.

Occupational Therapy in Mental Health via Telehealth during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about changes in mental health occupational therapy. Research into these changes and the associated risks of relapse is insufficient. To explore the changes that have taken place in forms of occupational intervention (face-to-face and online) during the pandemic, and to analyze their association with subsequent relapses, a multicenter retrospective cohort study was carried out of 270 patients with mental disorder diagnoses under follow-up in day hospitals during 2020.
