Background: Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is an attractive target for cancer theranostics. Although FAP-targeted nuclear imaging demonstrated promising clinical results, only sub-optimal results are reported for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT). Preclinical research is crucial in selecting promising FAP-targeted radiopharmaceuticals and for obtaining an increased understanding of factors essential for FAP-TRT improvement.

Neurostimulation, for example dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS), is increasingly used for managing chronic pain, including among women of reproductive age. We present the case of a 33-year-old patient with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) implanted with DRGS who subsequently became pregnant twice. Both pregnancies resulted in the delivery of healthy newborns via caesarean section under successful spinal anaesthesia, with no (device) complications.

Mesenteric Artery Stenosis is a Risk Factor for Anastomotic Leakage in Colorectal Surgery.

Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg

November 2024

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Franciscus Gasthuis and Vlietland, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Objective: Anastomotic leakage (AL) after colorectal surgery leads to substantial morbidity and mortality. Theoretically, compromised blood flow caused by mesenteric artery (MA) stenosis may create suboptimal healing conditions at the anastomotic site, increasing susceptibility to AL. The association between MA stenosis on pre-operative computed tomography (CT) scans and AL in patients undergoing colorectal surgery was investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of combining spaced training and testing for retaining complex clinical skills, specifically Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills, among nursing students.
  • The intervention group, which underwent spaced training and testing, showed better retention of BLS knowledge and skills compared to the control group, which had single-session training without testing.
  • The findings suggest that using both spaced training and testing can be an effective approach for improving retention of complex clinical skills over time.

This paper explains the coexistence of concerns about hereditary degeneration and opposition to reproductive intervention such as sterilisation in Dutch eugenic discourse during the interwar years. Based on an analysis of textbooks, periodical publications and printed lectures, I will show how eugenicists positioned themselves within the domain of public health by framing their domain of inquiry as a pivotal addition to curative medicine and sanitary reform. Dutch eugenicists rendered this symbiotic relationship conceptually plausible by combining criticism of genetic determinism and Lamarckian viewpoints on heredity.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the effectiveness of ultra-high-resolution (UHR) and high-resolution (HR) modes of photon-counting detector CT scans for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) in 60 patients before TAVI procedures, using quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) as a standard reference.
  • - Patients were divided into three groups based on the scanning mode used: HR mode, UHR mode, and an adjusted UHR mode designed for better coronary imaging, which included modifications in tube voltage and image quality.
  • - Results showed that UHR and adjusted UHR modes had improved sensitivity and negative predictive values for detecting CAD, but statistically, there were no significant differences compared to the HR mode in terms of diagnostic performance.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the effectiveness of targeted biopsy plus regional biopsy (TBx + RBx) against the standard approach of targeted biopsy plus systematic biopsy (TBx + SBx) in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer.
  • A meta-analysis of 21 studies showed that TBx + RBx had a similar detection yield of significant prostate cancer compared to TBx + SBx, suggesting that RBx can replace some systematic biopsies.
  • The study identifies limitations such as the retrospective nature of the included studies and variability in how regional biopsy was defined, but overall supports using TBx + RBx for prostate cancer detection.

Background And Purpose: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by pervasive personality and behavioural disturbances with severe impact on patients and caregivers. In current clinical practice, treatment is based on nonpharmacological and pharmacological approaches. Unfortunately, trial-based evidence supporting symptomatic pharmacological treatment for the behavioural disturbances in FTD is scarce despite the significant burden this poses on the patients and caregivers.

Transfer of learning occurs when past learning is applied to new situations, and also at a varying time from the initial time of learning. Importantly, research in both academic and clinical areas of health professions education has highlighted that transfer of learning often does not successfully occur. Successful transfer is multi-dimensional and occurs when the learner has the required motivation, mental model, metacognitive processes relevant to the task, and the opportunity to transfer their learning to different situations.
