Purpose Vitamin D receptor (VDR) has been proposed as a possible marker for fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). The purpose of this study is to characterize the expression pattern of BsmI polymorphism (rs1544410) in the VDR gene in women with FMS and the genotype-phenotype association. Methods A total of 105 FMS patients and 105 controls were included in this study.

Disrupted leptin-fatty acid biosynthesis is an early manifestation of metabolic abnormalities in schizophrenia.

World J Psychiatry

June 2022

Laboratory of Translational Neurology and Molecular Psychiatry, Department of Biotechnology, Era's Lucknow Medical College and Hospital, and Faculty of Science, Era University, Lucknow 226003, India.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) and impaired energy expenditure (IEE) are irreparable metabolic comorbidities in schizophrenia. Although mechanism(s) underlying IR and IEE remains unclear, leptin and fatty acid signaling, which has profound influence on insulin secretion/sensitivity, glucose metabolism and energy expenditure, could be disrupted. However, no association of plasma leptin with erythrocyte membrane fatty acids, body mass index (BMI), and psychotic symptoms in the same cohort of untreated patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) or medicated patients with chronic schizophrenia (CSZ) is presented before.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease and the most prevalent form of dementia. The generation of oxygen free radicals and oxidative damage is believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of AD. It has been suggested that date palm, a plant rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids, can provide an alternative treatment to fight memory loss and cognitive dysfunction due to its potent antioxidant activity.

Lead (Pb) is found in almost all phases in environment and biological systems. Pb stimulated oxidative stress is a state that involves the generation of free radicals beyond the permissible limits, which can deplete the antioxidant reserves and can result in oxidative stress, thus hampering the ability of the biological system to reverse the result. Exposure of rats to Pb (25 mg/kg body weight) for 8 weeks caused an increase in Pb levels in blood and brain.

Gastric ulcer (GU) is the most common and chronic inflammatory condition mediated by multiple immune cells like neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes with multiple pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukins such as IL-8, IL-10, IL-β, and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). Copper (Cu) is one of the essential micronutrients mainly found in the liver and brain. It plays a major role in metabolism, enzyme conversion, free radical scavenging, trafficking agents, and many others.

Cancer progression is linked to abnormal epigenetic alterations such as DNA methylation and histone modifications. Since epigenetic alterations, unlike genetic changes, are heritable and reversible, they have been considered as interesting targets for cancer prevention and therapy by dietary compounds such as luteolin. In this study, epigenetic modulatory behaviour of luteolin was analysed on HeLa cells.

Although reducing psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia has been a major focus of therapeutic interventions for decades, improving cognition is considered a better predictor of functional outcomes. However, the most commonly prescribed antipsychotic drugs (APDs) show only marginal beneficial effects on cognition in patients with schizophrenia. The neural mechanisms underlying cognitive disturbances in schizophrenia remain unknown that making drug development efforts very challenging.

Oxidative Stress-induced Autophagy Compromises Stem Cell Viability.

Stem Cells

May 2022

Laboratory for Stem Cell & Restorative Neurology, Department of Biotechnology, Era's Lucknow Medical College and Hospital, Era University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Stem cell therapies have emerged as a promising treatment strategy for various diseases characterized by ischemic injury such as ischemic stroke. Cell survival after transplantation remains a critical issue. We investigated the impact of oxidative stress, being typically present in ischemically challenged tissue, on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSC) and human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC).

Background: Phoenix dactylifera L. has a diverse set of pharmacological properties due to its distinct phytochemical profile. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticancer potential of Phoenix dactylifera seed extract (PDSE) in human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells, as well as liver cancer HepG2 cells, and to investigate the anticancer efficacy in triple-negative MDA-MB-231 cells, followed by in silico validation of the molecular interaction between active components of PDSE and caspase-3, an apoptosis executioner protein .

The Seven Countries Study showed that traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets are protective against cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The Japanese diet is considered the healthiest because it provides Japanese populations with the highest longevity and health. DASH and Mediterranean-style diets are also considered healthy diets, although the Indo-Mediterranean-style diet may provide better protective effects among patients with CVDs compared to other diets.
