. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), which involves a surgical procedure to place electrodes directly on the vagus nerve (VN), is approved clinically for the treatment of epilepsy, depression, and to facilitate rehabilitation in stroke. VNS at surgically implanted electrodes is often limited by activation of motor nerve fibers near and within the VN that cause neck muscle contraction.

Introduction: Following approval in 2009 of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS Therapy) for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) in the Russian Federation, this is the first multicenter study across Russia to evaluate the safety and efficacy of adjunctive VNS Therapy.
Methods: The retrospective, observational registry included 58 pediatric patients with DRE (5-17 years old at implantation) who had ≥2 years of VNS. To ensure a robust evaluation process, changes in seizure frequency were evaluated for all seizure types as well as "most disabling" seizures (defined as seizures accompanied by falls, physical trauma, and/or incontinence in the absence of preventative measures).

Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome (FCMS) presents with anarthria and bilateral (B/L) central facio-linguo-velo-pharyngo-masticatory paralysis with "autonomic voluntary dissociation." The most common cause of FCMS is cerebrovascular disease, while rarer causes include central nervous system infection, developmental disorders, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative disorders. Even though this syndrome is also referred to as (B/L) anterior operculum syndrome, patients with lesion in sites other than (B/L) opercular regions also can develop the syndrome.

Objective: Although vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a common and widely used therapy for pharmacoresistant epilepsy, the reported efficacy of VNS in pediatric patients varies, so it is unclear which children will respond to VNS therapy. This study aimed to identify functional brain network features associated with VNS action to distinguish VNS responders from nonresponders using scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) data.
Methods: Twenty-three children were included in this study, 16 in the discovery cohort and 7 in the test cohort.

Background: Invasive vagal nerve stimulation (iVNS) is a known treatment approach for patients with refractory epilepsy. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) was developed to overcome the side effects and surgical complications of iVNS. tVNS is proven beneficial in refractory epilepsy.

Background: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is the most common type of autoimmune encephalitis. Here, we investigated the factors associated with poor prognosis and relapse in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis.
Methods: In this single-center observational cohort study, we retrospectively analyzed 51 patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis treated in our hospital from January 2014 to October 2022.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare and severe neurological disorder mainly affecting females, usually linked to methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene mutations. Manifestations of RTT typically include loss of purposeful hand skills, gait and motor abnormalities, loss of spoken language, stereotypic hand movements, epilepsy, and autonomic dysfunction. Patients with RTT have a higher incidence of sudden death than the general population.

Epilepsy is one of the most common brain diseases, characterized by frequent recurrent seizures or "ictal" states. A patient experiences uncontrollable muscular contractions, inducing loss of mobility and balance, which may result in injury or even death during these ictal states. Extensive investigation is vital to establish a systematic approach for predicting and informing patients about oncoming seizures ahead of time.

Methods: A single-center retrospective chart review was conducted on pediatric patients implanted with the RNS System with a concomitant active VNS System (VNS+RNS) between 2015 and 2021. Patients with at least 1 month of overlapping concomitant VNS and RNS treatment were included.

Background: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a sudden, unexpected death in people with epilepsy, with or without evidence of an epileptic seizure. The pathophysiological mechanism underlying SUDEP appears to be partly associated with an autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is a reliable, non-invasive method for detecting fluctuations in the ANS.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) has been defined as a subset of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), without structural abnormalities, reflecting a functional disturbance. Over the past decade, SRC has gained increasing awareness and attention, which coincides with an increase in incidence rates. Because this injury has been considered one of the most challenging encounters for clinicians, there is a need for objective biomarkers to aid in diagnosis (i.

Introduction: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a heterogeneous group of inflammatory central nervous system disorders caused by a misdirected immune response against self-antigens expressed in the central nervous system. The thymus is a central organ in the immune system and thymic tumors are thought to be possible initiators of many neurological disorders. Recently, there is growing evidence that thymomas are associated with autoimmune encephalitis.

The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) regulates many critical physiological functions. Its control relies on cortical input, especially limbic areas, which are often involved in epilepsy. Peri-ictal autonomic dysfunction is now well documented, but inter-ictal dysregulation is less studied.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is used to treat drug-resistant epilepsy and depression, with additional applications under investigation. The noradrenergic center locus coeruleus (LC) is vital for VNS effects; however, the impact of varying stimulation parameters on LC activation is poorly understood. This study characterized LC activation across VNS parameters.

The neurodegenerative synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, are characterized by a typically lengthy prodromal period of progressive subclinical motor and non-motor manifestations. Among these, idiopathic REM sleep behaviour disorder is a powerful early predictor of eventual phenoconversion, and therefore represents a critical opportunity to intervene with neuroprotective therapy. To inform the design of randomized trials, it is essential to study the natural progression of clinical markers during the prodromal stages of disease in order to establish optimal clinical end points.

Some of the most important integrative control centers for the autonomic nervous system are located in the brainstem and the hypothalamus. However, growing recent neuroimaging evidence support that a set of cortical regions, named the central autonomic network (CAN), is involved in autonomic control and seems to play a major role in continuous autonomic cardiac adjustments to high-level emotional, cognitive or sensorimotor cortical activities. Intracranial explorations during stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) offer a unique opportunity to address the question of the brain regions involved in heart-brain interaction, by studying: (i) direct cardiac effects produced by the electrical stimulation of specific brain areas; (ii) epileptic seizures inducing cardiac modifications; (iii) cortical regions involved in cardiac interoception and source of cardiac evoked potentials.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a prevalent devastating condition causing significant morbidity and mortality, especially in developing countries. The pathophysiology of SCI involves ischemia, neuroinflammation, cell death, and scar formation. Due to the lack of definitive therapy for SCI, interventions mainly focus on rehabilitation to reduce deterioration and improve the patient's quality of life.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is defined as a sudden, unexpected, non-traumatic, non-drowning death in a person with epilepsy. SUDEP is generally considered to result from seizure-related cardiac dysfunction, respiratory depression, autonomic nervous dysfunction, or brain dysfunction. Frequency of generalized tonic clonic seizures (GTCS), prone posture, and refractory epilepsy are considered risk factors.
