Neuromodulation by vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) provides therapeutic benefits in multiple medical conditions, including epilepsy and clinical depression, but underlying mechanisms of action are not well understood. Cervical vagus nerve biopsies were procured from transplant organ donors for high resolution light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to map the human fascicular and sub-fascicular organization. Cervical vagal segments show laterality with right sided dominance in fascicle numbers and cross-sectional areas as well as sexual dimorphism with female dominance in fascicle numbers.

Autoimmune glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) astrocytopathy is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, the clinical phenotype of which includes meningoencephalitis, myelitis, optic neuritis, seizures, movement disorders, autonomic dysfunction among others, affecting people across all ages. Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a common neurologic disorder associated with many comorbid symptoms including fatigue, pain, headache, and orthostasis. These concurrent symptoms lead patients to accumulate multiple diagnoses comorbid with FND, including fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, persistent post-concussive symptoms, and chronic pain. The role of physical activity and exercise has not been evaluated in FND populations, though has been studied in certain comorbid conditions.

Determining the laterality of the seizure onset zone is challenging in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) due to the rapid propagation of epileptic discharges to the contralateral hemisphere. There is hemispheric lateralization of autonomic control, and heart rate is modulated by interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Based on this notion, the laterality of seizure foci in FLE might be determined using heart rate variability (HRV) parameters.

Vagal neuropathy causing vocal fold palsy is an uncommon complication of vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) placement. It may be associated with intraoperative nerve injury or with device stimulation.
