Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the impact of prolonged extreme heat exposure during early pregnancy (specifically during the August 2003 heatwave in France) on the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) in newborns.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from the Paris Registry of Congenital Malformations, finding that out of 1272 NTD cases recorded between 1994 and 2018, ten cases were linked to conceptions during the extreme heat period, showing a significantly higher risk (relative risk = 2.14).
  • - Overall, the findings indicate that exposure to extreme heat in the early stages of pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of NTDs, highlighting potential environmental health risks during critical periods of fetal development.

Validity of a Delphi consensus definition of growth restriction in the newborn for identifying neonatal morbidity.

Am J Obstet Gynecol

April 2024

Obstetrical, Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiology (EPOPé) Research Team, Université de Paris, Epidemiology and Statistics Research Center (CRESS), Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM), Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA), Paris, France.

Background: Small for gestational age is defined as a birthweight below a birthweight percentile threshold, usually the 10th percentile, with the third or fifth percentile used to identify severe small for gestational age. Small for gestational age is used as a proxy for growth restriction in the newborn, but small-for-gestational-age newborns can be physiologically small and healthy. In addition, this definition excludes growth-restricted newborns who have weights more than the 10th percentile.

Objective: To determine whether the relative measurement of birth weight (BW) and head circumference (HC) in preterm infants is associated with neurological outcomes.

Methods: The EPIPAGE-2 Study included 3473 infants born before 32 weeks' gestation, classified based on their Z-score of BW and HC on the Fenton curves as concordant (≤1 SD apart) or discordant (>1 SD difference). We defined four mutually exclusive categories: discordant smaller BW (sBW) with BW-1SD and concordant small measurement (CsM) with BW and HC concordant and both ≤-1SD.

Environmental pressures and pesticide exposure associated with an increase in the share of plant-based foods in the diet.

Sci Rep

November 2023

Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team (EREN), Epidemiology and Statistics Research Center (CRESS), Sorbonne Paris Nord University and University of Paris, Inserm, INRAE, Cnam, 74 Rue Marcel Cachin, 93017, Bobigny, France.

Diets rich in plant-based foods are encouraged for human health and to preserve resources and the environment but the nutritional quality and safety of such diets is debated. This study aimed to model nutritionally adequate diets with increasing plant food content and to characterise the derived diets using a multicriteria approach including, nutrients intake, environmental pressures and exposure to pesticides. Using data of the NutriNet-Santé cohort (N = 29,413), we implemented stepwise optimization models to identified maximum plant-food content under nutritional constraints.

Purpose: We studied to what extent plant-based meat substitutes could improve the nutritional adequacy and healthiness of dietary patterns, depending on their nutrient composition.

Methods: From diets observed in French adults (INCA3, n = 1125), modeled diets were identified by allowing various dietary changes, between and within food categories, when two plant-based meat substitutes were made available: an average substitute (from 43 market substitutes) and a theoretical nutritionally designed substitute, fortified or not with zinc and iron at 30% or 50% of Nutrient Reference Values. Under each scenario, healthier but acceptable modeled diets were identified using multi-criteria optimization, by maximizing a health criteria related to Dietary Guidelines while minimizing deviation from the observed diets, under constraints for nutrient adequacy.

UMR7206 Eco-Anthropologie (EA), Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, CNRS, Université de Paris, Musée de l'Homme, 17 Place du Trocadéro, 75016 Paris, France.

In the context of rapid nutritional transitions in Africa, few studies have analyzed the etiology of obesity by considering the driver pathways that predict body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study is to innovatively identify these driver pathways, including the main sociodemographic and socioecological drivers of BMI. We conducted a rural-urban quantitative study in Cameroon ( = 1106; balanced sex ratio) to explore this issue.
