Article Synopsis
  • Childhood maltreatment is linked to poorer sleep health in adolescents, serving as both a risk factor for mental illness and an area for potential intervention.
  • A study involving 494 adolescents used actigraphy and sleep diaries to assess sleep quality and found significant associations between various types of maltreatment and sleep health, excluding sexual abuse.
  • Results indicate that maltreatment negatively impacts both subjective and objective sleep measures, highlighting the importance of addressing sleep issues in at-risk youth.

The risk of developing chronic pain is twice as high among people with a history of childhood maltreatment compared to those without these experiences. It is unclear, however, whether childhood maltreatment might lead to lower or higher perception of pain. In this paper, we investigate the association between childhood maltreatment and pain sensitivity.

Article Synopsis
  • * Utilizing data from a randomized controlled trial (N = 165), the research analyzed difference scores from baseline to follow-up to assess improvements in illness management, personal recovery, clinical recovery, and functional recovery.
  • * Results indicate that better self-reported illness management is directly linked to enhanced personal recovery, with additional but lesser contributions from improvements in clinical and functional recovery.

Background: When introduced in 2020, the Netherlands' Compulsory Mental Healthcare Act included provisions for compulsory community treatment (CCT) and compulsory treatment in patients' homes (CTH). Although CCT has been incorporated into mental health care in many countries, its effectiveness is debated. We know of no other countries in which CTH has been adopted.

Medical psychiatry units (MPUs), also known as complexity intervention units, represent an important innovation for integrating medical and behavioral health care in the hospital setting, thereby reducing the need for sequential medical and psychiatric hospitalization. As US hospitals face an increased demand for mental health services, interest in the MPU model is gaining momentum. However, there is no shared definition for what constitutes an MPU, and significant variation exists among units across the United States that have been designated as an MPU.

In this meta-analysis, we evaluated changes in cognition for patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) with different durations of illness (DOIs). Records were identified through searches in PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Cochrane until December 2021. We used terms related to SSDs, chronicity, course, and recovery.

Background: Psychiatric emergency assessment of minors can be a complex process, especially for professional staff who are not specifically trained in handling child and adolescent emergency patients. As minors cannot usually express their feelings and experiences as well as adults, it is difficult to form an accurate picture of their condition and to determine what kind of emergency care is needed, for instance whether or not a psychiatric emergency admission is necessary. We lack insight in what professionals at emergency departments need to adequately assess these minors and their families.

Psychiatric Emergency Service Amsterdam (Zoeteman), Inforsa (de Haas), and Department of Research (Peen, Dekker), Arkin Mental Health Care, Amsterdam; Department of Healthy Living, Public Health Service Amsterdam, Amsterdam (de Wit); Department of Psychiatry, Amsterdam University Medical Center, Amsterdam (de Haas); Ambulance Amsterdam, Amsterdam (Borkent); Epidemiological and Social Psychiatric Research Institute, Erasmus Medical Center, and Parnassia Psychiatric Institute, Rotterdam (Mulder).

Objective: Police officers are often the first responders when individuals experience a mental health crisis and typically remain responsible for transport to a psychiatric emergency department. In 2014, a psychiatric ambulance (PA) was introduced in the city of Amsterdam to take over the transport of individuals in a mental health crisis. The purpose of the PA was to use fewer restrictive measures while guaranteeing safety for both patients and personnel.

The iBerry Study, a Dutch population-based high-risk cohort (n = 1022) examines the transition from subclinical symptoms to psychiatric disorders in adolescents. Here, we present the first follow-up measurement, approximately 3 years after baseline assessment and 5 years after the screening based on self-reported emotional and behavioral problems (SDQ-Y). We give an update on the data collection, details on the (non)response, and the results on psychopathology outcomes.

Objective: To provide up-to-date clinical guidance on the efficacy of lamotrigine in bipolar disorder (BD).

Methods: Eligible studies were identified during a systematic literature search according to PRISMA-guidelines. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies that quantitatively assessed lamotrigine's efficacy in BD.

Background And Hypothesis: In schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) personal recovery and subjective quality of life (S-QOL) are crucial and show conceptual overlap. There is limited knowledge about how these outcomes change over time. Therefore, we investigated changes in personal recovery or S-QOL for patients with SSD.

Background: Research on childhood adversity and psychopathology has begun investigating the dimension of timing, however the results have been contradictory depending on the study population, outcome and how adverse life events (ALEs) were operationalized. Additionally, studies so far typically focus only on a narrow range of psychiatric diagnoses or symptoms. The current cross-sectional study aimed to examine the association between timing, type and chronicity of ALEs and adolescent mental health problems.

Background: Although executive functioning is often measured using performance-based measures, these measures have their limits, and self-report measures may provide added value. Especially since these two types of measures often do not correlate with one another. It thus has been proposed they might measure different aspects of the same construct.

Department of Psychiatry, Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Epidemiological and Social Psychiatric Research Institute (ESPRi), Department of Psychiatry, Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Objective: In 2050 two-thirds of the world's population is predicted to live in cities, which asks for a better understanding of how the urban environment affects mental health. Urbanicity has repeatedly been found to be a risk factor, in particular for psychosis. Here, we explored what factors of the urban exposome underlie the association between urban characteristics and psychotic experiences (PE) in adolescents.

A robust association has been reported between childhood adverse life events (ALEs) and risky substance use in adolescence. It remains unclear, however, what the impact of type and timing of these ALEs is. We investigated the association between ALEs and substance use in adolescents.

Department of Psychiatry, Epidemiological and Social Psychiatric Research Institute, Erasmus MC University Medical Centre, Doctor Molewaterplein 40, Rotterdam, 3015 GD, The Netherlands.

Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) is a psychosocial intervention supporting people with serious mental illnesses. In this study, 15 IMR groups were assessed for fidelity and clinician competency to establish the implementation level of all IMR elements and explore complementarity of the IMR Treatment Integrity Scale (IT-IS) to the standard IMR Fidelity Scale. Use of the IT-IS was adapted, similar to the IMR Fidelity Scale.

Disruptive behavior in adolescents is burdensome and may continue into adulthood if left unidentified. The strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) can screen for disruptive behavior, but its psychometric properties in high-risk samples and ability to predict delinquency warrant further investigation. In 1022 adolescents, we investigated the predictive validity (on average 1.
