Pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) are a polygenic family with many scattered genes and pseudogenes resulting from the duplication or fusion of a pseudogene with expression beginning in the trophoblast during the peri-implantation period and continuing in the trophectoderm. In this study, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and insertion/deletion (InDels) in the open reading frame (nine exons) of crossbreed pigs are reported for the first time. Novel SNPs/InDels were researched using genomic DNA templates isolated from the leukocytes of crossbreed pigs (N = 25), which were amplified, gel-out-purified, and sequenced.

Socio-ecological risk factors associated with human flea infestations of rural household in plague-endemic areas of Madagascar.

Plague is a flea-borne fatal disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which persists in rural Madagascar. Although fleas parasitizing rats are considered the primary vectors of Y. pestis, the human flea, Pulex irritans, is abundant in human habitations in Madagascar, and has been found naturally infected by the plague bacterium during outbreaks.

Long-term follow-up of balloon-expandable valves according to the implantation strategy: insight from the DIRECTAVI trial.

Background: Safety and feasibility of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) without balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) using the SAPIEN 3 balloon-expandable device has been previously demonstrated. The impact on long-term valve hemodynamic performances and outcomes remains however unknown. We evaluate long-term clinical and hemodynamic results according to the implant strategy (direct TAVR vs BAV pre-TAVR) in patients included in the DIRECTAVI randomized trial (NCT02729519).

Dietary acid load and the risk of events of mortality and kidney replacement therapy in people with chronic kidney disease: the Progredir Cohort Study.

Background/objectives: The association between dietary acid load (DAL) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression remains controversial. Also, there is a gap in the literature on the association between DAL and mortality. In this study, we evaluated the association between NEAP (net endogenous acid production) and PRAL (potential renal acid load) and the risk of events of all-cause mortality and kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in people with CKD.

Reference Values of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test Parameters in the Contemporary Paediatric Population.

Background: The evaluation of health status by cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) has shown increasing interest in the paediatric population. Our group recently established reference Z-score values for paediatric cycle ergometer VO, applicable to normal and extreme weights, from a cohort of 1141 healthy children. There are currently no validated reference values for the other CPET parameters in the paediatric population.

Use of new paediatric VO2max reference equations to evaluate aerobic fitness in overweight or obese children with congenital heart disease.

Aims: Overweight and obesity in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) represent an alarming cardiovascular risk. Promotion of physical activity and cardiac rehabilitation in this population requires assessing the level of aerobic fitness (VO2max) by a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). Nevertheless, the interpretation of CPET in overweight/obese children with CHD remains challenging as VO2max is affected by both the cardiac condition and the body mass index (BMI).

Adaptation and Validation of a French Version of the Vaccination Attitudes Examination (VAX) Scale.

Over the past decades, vaccination has proven to be largely beneficial to global health. Despite vaccine efficacy, the French population has been recently affected by more anti-vaccination attitudes and vaccine refusal, and it is therefore necessary to validate tools to study this health issue. The Vaccination Attitudes Examination scale (VAX) is a 12-item questionnaire targeting adults that assesses general attitudes towards vaccination.

Relationships between neuropsychological performance, insight, medication adherence, and social metacognition in schizophrenia.

Background: Social metacognition is still poorly understood in schizophrenia, particularly its neuropsychological basis and its impact on insight and medication adherence. We therefore quantified social metacognition as the agreement between objective and subjective mentalization and assessed its correlates in a sample of individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Methods: Participants consisted of 143 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders who underwent a metacognitive version of a mentalization task, an extensive neuropsychological battery, and a clinical evaluation to assess their insight into illness and medication adherence.

High stake clinical choices in psychiatry can be impacted by external irrelevant factors. A strong understanding of the cognitive and behavioural mechanisms involved in clinical reasoning and decision-making is fundamental in improving healthcare quality. Indeed, the decision in clinical practice can be influenced by errors or approximations which can affect the diagnosis and, by extension, the prognosis: human factors are responsible for a significant proportion of medical errors, often of cognitive origin.

Archaea, a prokaryotic life domain, comprise methanogenic species that are part of the neonatal human microbiota and contribute to early immune imprinting.

Hospitalization Risks for Neurological Disorders in Primary Sjögren's Syndrome Patients.

Primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) can be associated with neurological and cognitive involvement, negatively affecting patients’ quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess whether pSS patients are at higher risk of hospitalization for neurological diseases. Through a nationwide retrospective study using the French Health insurance database (based on International Classification for Disease codes, ICD-10), we selected patients hospitalized with new-onset pSS between 2011 and 2018.

Macular Pigment and Open-Angle Glaucoma in the Elderly: The Montrachet Population-Based Study.

(1) Background: To compare macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and its spatial distribution between eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and control eyes in an elderly population. (2) Methods: The Montrachet study (Maculopathy Optic Nerve and nutrition neurovAsCular and HEarT) is a population-based study including participants aged 75 years and over. All participants had a slit lamp examination, fundus photographs, and a questionnaire about their medical past history and smoking status.

New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis.

Cost-effectiveness of 12 months of capecitabine as adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer: preplanned cost-effectiveness analysis of the JFMC37-0801 study.

Objectives: We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of a 12-month regimen of oral capecitabine versus a standard 6-month regimen as postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer.

Methods: We utilized patient-level data from a multi-institutional randomized controlled trial (JFMC37-0801) that investigated prolonged oral fluoropyrimidine monotherapy. The analysis considered three health states: stable disease, post-metastasis, and death.

Endothelial cell loss 5 years after Preserflo MicroShunt implantation: About two cases.

Purpose: Preserflo MicroShunt is a minimally-invasive glaucoma drainage micro-tube used to shunt aqueous humor from the anterior chamber to the subtenon space. The safety of the procedure was considered satisfactory with a majority of minor side effects.

Observation: We describe the 5 year endothelial cell loss after Preserflo implantation in 2 primary open angle glaucoma patients.
