This study employed focus group interviews (FGIs) to evaluate the preparedness and training requirements for an emerging infectious disease response system in the Republic of Korea. Based on the FGIs, the critical role of interdepartmental cooperation in responding to emerging infectious diseases was identified, with agencies such as public health centers, police, and fire services playing key roles in scene control, decontamination, and patient transport. Frequent staff turnover and a lack of trained personnel at local government levels were significant challenges, necessitating the development of training materials for unskilled workers.

Nature uses fibrous structures for sensing and structural functions as observed in hairs, whiskers, stereocilia, spider silks, and hagfish slime thread skeins. Here, we demonstrate multi-nozzle printing of 3D hair arrays having freeform trajectories at a very high rate, with fiber diameters as fine as 1.5 µm, continuous lengths reaching tens of centimeters, and a wide range of materials with elastic moduli from 5 MPa to 3500 MPa.

Purpose: To analyze the latest annual trends in immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) and delayed sequential bilateral cataract surgery (DSBCS) among patients with bilateral cataracts in Korea, and to identify the factors influencing the choice of surgery and the outcomes associated with ISBCS and DSBCS.
Methods: This retrospective, nationwide cohort study included all patients aged 65 and older who were covered by the Korean National Health Insurance and underwent ISBCS or DSBCS from 2016 to 2021. The study recorded yearly numbers of ISBCS and DSBCS procedures, the interval between surgeries in DSBCS cases, patient demographics, types of implanted intraocular lenses (IOLs), and the incidence of cystoid macular edema and endophthalmitis following ISBCS or DSBCS.

Purpose: Mood disorders frequently coexist with borderline personality pathology (BPP), presenting considerable clinical challenges. Affective temperaments (AT) play a role in modulating mood disorders and influence the manifestation of illness. BPP and AT share common characteristics, such as emotional instability, impulsivity, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

Differences in demographics, medical expertise, and patient healthcare resources across countries have led to significant variations in guidelines. In light of these differences, in this review, we aimed to explore and compare the most recent updates to gastric cancer treatment from five guidelines that are available in English. These English-version guidelines, which have been recently published and updated for journal publication, include those published in South Korea in 2024, Japan in 2021, China in 2023, the United States in 2024, and Europe in 2024.

The contribution of the gut to the ingestion, production, absorption, and excretion of the extra ammonia and urea-N associated with feeding ("exogenous" fraction) has received limited prior attention. Analysis of commercial pellet food revealed appreciable concentrations of ammonia and urea-N. Long term satiation-feeding increased whole trout ammonia and urea-N excretion rates by 2.

Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a quaternary ammonium antimicrobial used in numerous personal care products, human food, cosmetic products, and cleaning solutions. Yet, there is minimal published data on CPC effects on eukaryotes, immune signaling, and human health. Previously, it was shown that low-micromolar CPC inhibits rat mast cell function by inhibiting antigen (Ag)-stimulated Ca mobilization, microtubule polymerization, and degranulation.

Obesity due to excessive body fat accumulation remains a global problem. Patients with obesity have high cortisol levels, and its dysregulation is caused by increased 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) levels. The effects and mechanism of J2H-1702, an 11β-HSD1 inhibitor, on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) were explored.

We present ab initio calculations of the resonant Auger spectrum of benzene. In the resonant process, Auger decay ensues following the excitation of a core-level electron to a virtual orbital. Hence, resonant Auger decay gives rise to higher-energy Auger electrons compared to nonresonant decay.

Objective: The laparoscopic approach for locally advanced gastric cancer has recently been adopted based on the results of several randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However, findings from RCTs have not been examined at the national level. This study aimed to investigate the external validity of the Korean Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Study-02 (KLASS-02) trial involving 13 tertiary hospitals, using data from the Korean Gastric Cancer Association (KGCA)-led nationwide survey involving 68 tertiary or general hospitals.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease affecting a significant portion of the global population, whose etiology can be attributed to the protozoan organism Toxoplasma gondii. Despite its public health importance, an efficacious vaccine to prevent human toxoplasmosis remains unavailable. To this end, we designed an experimental toxoplasmosis vaccine using recombinant vaccinia virus vectors (rVacv) expressing the T.

In order to overcome the technical challenges of poor stability and weak antibacterial effects of individual essential oil in food preservation applications, the present study aimed to encapsulate cinnamon and clove essential oil compound by using spray-drying technique. The combination of cinnamon and clove essential oils was determined to have good synergistic bacteriostatic effects by the checkerboard dilution method, and the best bacteriostatic effect could be obtained when the volume ratio was 7:3 for compounding. Microcapsules were prepared using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) as wall material and compound essential oil as core material, the optimal conditions for the microcapsule preparation process through a one-way test were: homogenizing speed of 8000 r/min, wall material addition of 2 %, HPCD to EO ratio of 1:3, EO to T-80 ratio of 1.

Tailor-made enzymes empower a wide range of versatile applications, although searching for the desirable enzymes often requires high throughput screening and thus poses significant challenges. In this study, we employed homology searches and protein language models to discover and prioritize enzymes by their kinetic parameters. We aimed to discover kynureninases as a potentially versatile therapeutic enzyme, which hydrolyses L-kynurenine, a potent immunosuppressive metabolite, to overcome the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in anticancer therapy.

In this paper, we demonstrate the performance of several density-based methods in predicting the inversion of S1 and T1 states of a few N-heterocyclic triangulene based fused ring molecules (popularly known as INVEST molecules) with an eye to identify a well performing but cost-effective preliminary screening method. Both conventional linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (LR-TDDFT) and ΔSCF methods (namely maximum overlap method, square-gradient minimization method, and restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham) are considered for excited state computations using exchange-correlation (XC) functionals from different rungs of Jacob's ladder. A well-justified systematism is observed in the performance of the functionals when compared against fully internally contracted multireference configuration interaction singles and doubles and/or equation of motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD), with the most important feature being the capture of spin-polarization in the presence of correlation.

Electrode material capacities and cycle performances must improve for large-scale applications such as energy storage systems. Numerous investigations have developed cathode materials to improve lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) performance: however, few have examined new anode materials. In this study, we synthesized a Ni-B/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites via a simple chemical reaction method to enhance the stability of electrodes in LIBs.

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells are widely used in biomedical research relevant to cancer, toxicity screening, and viruses, as well as in the production of recombinant proteins for biopharmaceuticals. In this study, liquid chromatography (LC)-electrospray ionization (ESI)-higher energy collisional dissociation (HCD)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was used to characterize the surface and lysate N-glycans of CHO-K1 cells and analyze their structures. The relative quantity (%) of each N-glycan and absolute quantity (pmol) of total N-glycans were also obtained.
