Various studies have shown that the heavy use of pharmaceuticals poses serious ecological risks, especially in metropolitan areas with intensive human activities. In this study, the spatial distribution, sources, and ecological risks of 29 pharmaceuticals in 82 surface waters collected from the North Canal Basin in Beijing were studied. The results showed that the pharmaceutical concentrations ranged from not detected to 193 ng/L, with ampicillin being undetected while ofloxacin had a 100% detection frequency, which indicates the widespread occurrence of pharmaceutical pollution in the North Canal Basin.

The formation and aging processes of oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) are important for understanding the formation mechanisms of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) in the field. In this study, we investigated the mixing states of OOM particles by identifying several oxygenated species along with the distributions of secondary organic carbon (SOC) during both clean and ozone (O)-polluted periods in July and September of 2022 in Guangzhou, China. OOM-containing particles accounted for 57 % and 49 % of the total detected single particles in July and September, respectively.

Seasonal variations of environmental parameters usually lead to considerable changes in microbial communities. Nevertheless, the specific response patterns of these communities in coastal areas subjected to different levels of contamination remain unclear. Our results revealed notable fluctuations in the bacterioplankton community both seasonally and spatially, with seasonal variations being particularly significant.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

April 2024

College of Chemistry, Liaoning University, No. 66 Chongshan Middle Road, Shenyang 110036, China.

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), an emerging organic contaminant, necessitates robust on-site detection strategies to safeguard human health and ecological balance. This study introduces a novel point-of-care testing (POCT) platform, combining a hydrogel kit with nanozymes and smartphone technology, for the highly sensitive detection of PFOS. The strategy utilizes copper-substituted cobalt-based Prussian blue analogue nanoboxes (CuCo-PBA NBs), which exhibit intricate hollow structures and remarkable peroxidase-like catalytic activity, efficiently catalyzing the oxidation of chromogenic substrates with hydrogen peroxide (HO).

Aromatic amines are a class of compounds bearing amino groups on their benzene rings; these compounds are important raw materials for the industrial production of rubber chemicals, pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, photosensitive chemicals, and agricultural chemicals. Research has revealed that some aromatic amines teratogenetic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic properties. Given the high toxicity and potential harm caused by aromatic amines, monitoring their levels in water sources is critical.

Wind-driven hydrodynamic characteristics of Lake Taihu, a large shallow lake in China.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

April 2024

Key Laboratory of Yangtze River Water Environment, Tongji University, Shanghai, 200092, China.

As an essential drinking water source and one of the largest eutrophic shallow lakes in China, the management of Lake Taihu requires an adequate understanding of its hydrodynamic characteristics. Studying the hydrodynamic characteristics of Lake Taihu based on field observations is limited owing to its large area and the lack of flow field stability. Previous studies using hydrodynamic models experienced challenges, such as dimensionality and lack of dynamic response analysis between flow field and realistic wind; therefore, the results were still inconclusive.

Objective: Mercury (Hg) contamination in the environment around mercury mines is often accompanied by heavy metal contamination.

Methods: Here, we determined concentrations of chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and lead (Pb) in duck eggs from a Hg mining area in Southwest China to assess the contamination and health risk.

Results: Duck eggs obtained from the mining area exhibit higher concentrations of Cr, Zn, Sr, Ba, and Pb compared to those from the background area, with egg yolks containing higher metal levels than egg whites.

It is of great importance to scientifically evaluate the impact of weather and climate conditions on the occurrence of O pollution in order to improve the accuracy of O pollution forecasts, as well as to reasonably control and reduce the adverse effects of O pollution. The characteristics of O concentration and climate background were analyzed based on daily O concentration data, meteorological factors, and NCEP/NCER reanalysis data from 2006 to 2021 in Shanghai. In addition, the differences in atmospheric circulation situations during years with anomalous O concentrations were compared and diagnosed from the perspective of climatology.

The Key Lab of Pollution Control and Ecosystem Restoration in Industry Clusters, Ministry of Education, School of Environment and Energy, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510006, China.

Proteins in atmospheric aerosol can react with atmospheric pollutants such as ozone (O) and nitrogen dioxide (NO) in the atmosphere via the reactions of oxidation, nitration, and cross-linking etc. Currently, the reactions have been more thoroughly studied in the laboratory but rarely investigated in the ambient environment. In this study, we used bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model protein to conduct the exposure experiment in the ambient environment in southern China, an area with increasing oxidative capacity, to investigate the reactions of proteins in the atmosphere.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how focused wave groups travel over hypothetical fringing reef profiles using physical experiments and simulations in a 69 m long wave flume.
  • Measurements of wave elevation and flow velocity reveal that low-frequency waves increase on the reef flat while shorter waves are diminished by rapid breaking near the reef edge and crest.
  • The research employs a multi-layer non-hydrostatic wave model to evaluate its effectiveness in simulating these wave interactions with the reef structures.

Black carbon (BC) is a distinct type of carbonaceous aerosol that has a significant impact on the environment, human health, and climate. A non-BC material coating on BC can alter the mixing state of the BC particles, which considerably enhances the mass absorption efficiency of BC by directing more energy toward the BC cores (lensing effect). A lot of methods have been reported for quantifying the enhancement factor (E), with diverse results.

Dual isotopes of nitrogen and oxygen of NO are crucial tools for quantifying the formation pathways and precursor NO sources contributing to atmospheric nitrate. However, further research is needed to reduce the uncertainty associated with NO proportional contributions. The acquisition of nitrogen isotopic composition from NO emission sources lacks regulation, and its impact on the accuracy of contribution results remains unexplored.
