The present work provides the first attempt of using manganese dioxide loaded poly(sodium acrylate) hydrogel (MnO@PSA) to address potential threats posed by oxytetracycline (OTC) antibiotics in aqueous environment. The MnO@PSA was prepared via a facile approach and demonstrated enhanced removal performance even under extremely high concentrations of OTC. The outstanding performance exhibited by MnO@PSA was attributed to synergetic effects of adsorption oxidative degradation.

In this study, hydrous manganese dioxide (HMO) modified poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA) hydrogel was produced for the first time to remove tetracycline(TC) and lead(Pb(II)) from water. The as-prepared composite was characterized using various techniques, such as SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, BET, and XPS, to elucidate the successful loading of HMO and analyze subsequent sorption mechanisms. Different influencing parameters such as adsorbent dose, initial concentration of adsorbates, reaction time, solution pH, and temperature were also investigated.

Tetracyclines are extensively used to treat human and animal infectious diseases due to its effective antimicrobial activities. About 70-90% of its parent materials are released into the environment through urine and feces, implying they are the most frequently detected antibiotics in the environment with high ecological risks. Bloom-forming freshwater cyanobacterial genera pose a major ecological problem due to their ability to produce toxins and other bioactive compounds, which can have important implications in illnesses of humans and livestock. Cyanobacteria such as Microcystis, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, Phormidium, and Aphanizomenon species producing microcystins and anatoxin-a have been predominantly documented from most South Korean lakes and reservoirs. With the increase in frequency of such blooms, various monitoring approaches, treatment processes, and prediction models have been developed in due course.

Geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase (GGPS) is a key enzyme for a structurally diverse class of isoprenoid biosynthetic metabolites including gibberellins, carotenoids, chlorophylls and rubber. We expressed a chloroplast-targeted GGPS isolated from sunflower (Helianthus annuus) under control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The resulting transgenic tobacco plants expressing heterologous GGPS showed remarkably enhanced growth (an increase in shoot and root biomass and height), early flowering, increased number of seed pods and greater seed yield compared with that of GUS-transgenic lines (control) or wild-type plants.

Effects of photoperiod were investigated in lab-scale photobioreactors containing algal-bacterial consortia to reduce organic nutrients from municipal wastewater. Under three photoperiod conditions (12 h:12 h, 36 h:12 h, and 60 h:12 h dark–light cycles), nutrient removals and biomass productions were measured along with monitoring microbial population dynamics. After a batch operation for 12 days, 59–80% carbon, 35–88% nitrogen, and 43–89% phosphorus were removed from influents, respectively.

It is known that water purified by conventional TiO2 photocatalysts may not be safe enough for drinking, due to the toxicity by tiny existence of TiO2 nanoparticles after water treatment. We herein demonstrate a facile design of a three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 photocatalyst structure with which both the efficiency of purification and the safety level of the final purified water can be improved and ensured, respectively. The structure, consisting of 3D sulfur-doped TiO2 microtubes in nanotubes (eco-TiO2), is suitable for both environmental and bio-medical applications.

Although most algae cultivation systems are operated in suspended culture, an attached growth system can offer several advantages over suspended systems. Algal cultivation becomes light-limited as the microalgal concentration increases in the suspended system; on the other hand, sunlight penetrates deeper and stronger in attached systems owing to the more transparent water. Such higher availability of sunlight makes it possible to operate a raceway pond deeper than usual, resulting in a higher areal productivity.

Genetic engineering in microalgae is gaining attraction but nuclear transformation methods available so far are either inefficient or require special equipment. In this study, we employ positively charged nanoparticles, 3-aminopropyl-functionalized magnesium phyllosilicate (aminoclay, approximate unit cell composition of [H2N(CH2)3]8Si8Mg6O12(OH)4), for nuclear transformation into eukaryotic microalgae. TEM and EDX analysis of the process of transformation reveals that aminoclay coats negatively-charged DNA biomolecules and forms a self-assembled hybrid nanostructure.

A Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain DS48-5-3(T), was isolated from a 48 m sediment sample taken from Daechung Reservoir, Republic of Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies showed a clear affiliation of this strain to the Bacteroidetes, notably most closely related to Ferruginibacter alkalilentus HU1-GD23(T), Ferruginibacter lapsinanis HU1-HG42(T) and Ferruginibacter yonginensis HME8442(T), showing 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of these species of 95.2-96.

In the continued search for inhibitors of enoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase, we found that four acylbenzenediol sulfate metabolites from Streptomyces sp. AN1761 potently inhibited bacterial enoyl-ACP reductases of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A novel Gram-reaction-positive bacterium, strain CH22-21(T), was isolated from a water sample taken from Daechung Reservoir, Republic of Korea, during the late-blooming period of cyanobacteria. Cells of strain CH22-21(T) were non-motile, ciliated short rods that formed creamy-white colonies on half-strength modified R2A agar. Flocculation is most preferred method for harvesting microalgae, however, the role of bacteria in microalgal flocculation process is still unknown. This study proves that bacteria play a profound role in flocculating by increasing the floc size resulting in sedimentation of microalgae. A flocculating activity of 94% was achieved with xenic Chlorella vulgaris culture as compared to 2% achieved with axenic culture.
