Although papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC)-type nuclear changes are the most reliable morphological feature in the diagnosis of PTC, the nuclear assessment used to identify these changes is highly subjective. Here, we report a noninvasive encapsulated thyroid tumor with a papillary growth pattern measuring 23 mm at its largest diameter with a nuclear score of 2 in a 26-year-old man. After undergoing left lobectomy, the patient was diagnosed with an encapsulated PTC.

Effect of combined therapy with catheter-directed thrombolysis and factor Xa inhibitor for inferior vena cava thrombosis: A case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

July 2018

Department of Internal Medicine, Enshu Hospital, JA Shizuoka Kohseiren, Chuo, Naka-ku, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan.

Rationale: Inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis is an under-recognized entity that is associated with a mortality rate approaching twice that of lower extremity deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Thrombolytic therapy not only results in greater lysis, but also results in higher complication rates than anticoagulation alone. Catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT), which is effective in accomplishing local resolution whilst reducing bleeding complications, has been established as an alternative treatment for patients with extensive DVT.

Thyroid hormone receptor β1 (THRB1) and estrogen-related receptor α (ESRRA; also known as ERRα) both play important roles in mitochondrial activity. To understand their potential interactions, we performed transcriptome and ChIP-seq analyses and found that many genes that were co-regulated by both THRB1 and ESRRA were involved in mitochondrial metabolic pathways. These included oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and β-oxidation of fatty acids.

Minodronate for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Ther Clin Risk Manag

April 2018

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan.

Minodronate is a third-generation bisphosphonate that was developed and approved for clinical use in osteoporosis therapy in Japan. The mechanism of action for suppressing bone resorption is the inhibition of farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase, a key enzyme in the mevalonic acid metabolic pathway of osteoclasts, to induce apoptosis of the cells. Minodronate is the strongest inhibitor of bone resorption among the currently available oral bisphosphonates.

Serum homocysteine is a possible marker to indicate bone quality. However, it is not clear whether changes are seen in serum homocysteine levels with long-term bisphosphonate therapy. We aimed to investigate the factors affecting serum homocysteine levels during a 3-year period of monthly minodronate therapy in osteoporotic women, and to examine if the serum homocysteine levels could reflect some aspects of bone metabolism.

Background: Although the accurate diagnosis of pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) requires pathologic evaluation, this diagnosis is often suggested when the radiologic findings are consistent with typical PPFE and when pulmonary apical cap, which radiologically and pathologically mimics PPFE, can be excluded by confirming disease progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of the clinical diagnosis of idiopathic PPFE.

Methods: We recruited 44 patients with idiopathic PPFE according to our modified diagnostic criteria: 1) a radiologic PPFE pattern (i.
